Recap / Legends of Tomorrow S4 E1 "The Virgin Gary"

Go To

The Legends have to deal with the consequences of releasing Mallus, as they try to convince Constantine to join their team and help them.

Tropes:

  • Black Comedy: It's probably difficult to have a killer unicorn and not get a few dark laughs. Special mention goes to the team's awe being replaced with shock and horror when it gores a hapless victim. A bystander looks at his own unicorn t-shirt with an expression of absolute terror, and it's all played for laughs.
  • Blatant Lies:
  • Bloodless Carnage: In the trailer for season 4, the doomed hippie was gored in a big splash of blood; the final version falls into this trope instead.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Sara borrows Constantine's "Bollocks!" curse word, when she sees his divining bones move.
  • Brain Bleach: There was a collective wince when it's revealed in the end that the unicorn bit off Gary's nipple.
  • Bright Is Not Good: The beautiful unicorn that trails rainbows and sprays glitter is also a savage, flesh-eating monster.
  • Brutal Honesty: When Nate's mother asks where Mick got all his muscles from, he bluntly tells her: Prison.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: When Ray and Zari are talking about the special 'someone' who must have freed Nora Darhk.
  • Butt-Monkey: Who's the virgin bait to capture the Unicorn? Gary of course! He loses a nipple in the process.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Nate does this toward his father under the influence of the Unicorn's hallucinogenic musk.
  • Casting Gag: Nate's father is played by Thomas F. Wilson, who himself partook of some time-traveling once upon a time.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with some mysterious demon briefly possessing John's body to leave him a message. He's coming for him.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Ava is not happy to see Constantine (who she knows once slept with Sara) visiting Sara in their home.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • Demonic Possession: An unknown demon tries this during the final scene with John.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: John at the end of the episode, as he is obviously extremely jaded about him constantly pushing everybody away.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Averted. After the Legends deal with the final anachronism, the Time Bureau shows their gratitude by throwing them a surprise party at their headquarters.
  • Fan Disservice:
    • Gary shirtless as he lures the unicorn out, right up to when the creature bit his nipple off and he starts bleeding heavily.
    • The handsome John Constantine is barely wearing a towel while he is attacked by a demon.
  • Fantastic Drug: The Unicorn's goo works as a hallucinogen.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: The Unicorn looks all cute and cuddly complete with a rainbow trail; it's also a dangerous killing machine.
  • Hellish Horse: The unicorn, once John's banishing spell rips off its veneer, is hairless and emaciated with bloody fangs.
  • Internal Reveal: At the episode's end, Sara tells Ava about the magic monsters the Legends accidentally released (though Gary told her first).
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
    • When Zari mentions that Wally took time off to find himself, she notes that's exactly what he did last year.
    • Ray notes that fighting mystical monsters "would be good for their ratings"note , referring to their ratings within the Time Bureau, which he notes that the Legends have "a few dedicated fans."
  • Mood Whiplash: The Legends and nearby bystanders practically swoon over the sight of the unicorn. This changes quickly when the unicorn gores a hippie and starts chowing down.
  • Mushroom Samba: Unicorns inflict them on anyone who poses a threat. So we get the likes of Nate thinking Rory's his father, Rory thinking Nate is his pet mouse Axl, Zari gushing about the love all around her, and Ray passionately embracing a tree, thinking that it's Nora.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Apparently, Gary and Constantine did something that makes the former wonder if he still counts as a virgin. John insists that he does.
    • Something happened to Constantine in the five months since the defeat of Mallus that has made him more jaded than ever.
  • No-Sell: The Unicorn outright ignores Mick's flamethrower.
  • Oblivious Guilt Slinging: When Sara says that the Bureau can't pin the blame of Nora Darhk's escape on them, Ray looks away embarrassed.
  • Odd Couple: John and Gary. A macho mystic man and nebbish bureaucrat, and yet they hook up.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • What does Sara utter when John's divining bones begin to move? "Bollocks!"
    • Nate has this reaction when his dad offhandedly mentions the "Woodstock massacre", an event that was decidedly not a part of normal history that Nate is familiar with.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The Legends dealing with the apparently-final anachronism: Nate replaces Paul Revere on his famous ride.
  • Opinion Flip Flop: Mick is initially dismissive of saving The Beatles. When Nate points out that the band's influence will eventually result in Black Sabbath, Mick immediately vows to protect the Beatles.
  • Prisons Are Gymnasiums: Mick attributes his muscles to his time in prison. Nate's mom assumes that he's joking.
  • Red Herring: Zari immediately assumes that the murders are caused by the fugitive Nora Darhk until the unicorn shows itself.
  • Refusal of the Call: John refuses Sara's offer to join the Legends, believing he'll only cause the team ruin; however we know he'll change his mind.
  • Ripple Effect Indicator: The first sign to the Legends that something is off is when Nate's dad mentions "the Woodstock massacre."
  • Running Gag: Sara pickpockets Gary...again.
  • Shout-Out: Nate calls the unicorn Twilight Sparkle, admits to being a Brony when Ray asks him (and Ray is revealed to be one too), and encourages Mick to "join the herd". Granted, he was under the unicorn's spell, but still...
  • Shown Their Work: Despite their reputation in pop culture, in old myths unicorns were indeed dangerous, wild and unpredictable creatures.
  • Sliding Scale of Idealism vs. Cynicism: Sara and Constantine get into a debate over the importance of friends. John thinks that it is too dangerous for somebody like them to get close to people, as they could get hurt, while Sara refuses to let the dangers of their lives take away all the good things.
  • Special Edition Title: John's pentagram is now added to opening titles.
  • Surprise Party: The Time Bureau throws one for the Legends for fixing the last anachronism.
  • Tempting Fate: Just after Sara tells Constantine that there have been no signs of demons for 5 months, the Unicorn shows up.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After being used as bait, narrowly avoiding being killed by a unicorn, and getting a nipple bitten off for his trouble, Gary is led away by Constantine, who implies that he's willing to help relieve Gary of his virginity.
  • Torso with a View: The results of the unicorn's kills after it gores its victims and eats their hearts.
  • Unicorns Prefer Virgins: Constantine plans to banish the unicorn to hell before it can massacre the attendants, but requires a virgin to lure it in long enough. Thus, the team gets an unwitting Gary to pose as bait.
  • Victory Is Boring: At the beginning of the episode, the Legends (minus Sara) are pretty bored with just fixing anachronisms and are downright itching for a fight with one of the escaped demons.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Nate's relation with his dad in a nutshell; a big macho army man who ended up with hemophilic son with bookish interests. Nate practically jumps for joy when he hears his dad say "I love you too" (of course, it's actually Mick saying it, thinking that Nate is his beloved pet rat), and at the end of the episode, tries to bond with Hank over some beer.
