Recap / Learning How to Be a Princess Chapter 9 "The Intruder"

Go To

After getting back from Hexside, Luz finds that her second stay at the Owl House is fraught with a bit more danger.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptation Expansion: While in canon, King was factually incorrect about the snaggleback's position in the food chain, here he's correct about them, emphasizing that he's talking about mature snagglebacks. The one that he meets later in the chapter, now named Arin, is explictly an adolescent and will get bigger with age. Not only that, but he came to the Owl House to deliver a message to King from his sister.
  • Blessed with Suck: While the Titan's power is how Belos survived his battle with the Demon King, Camila openly refers to Belos' connection to the Titan as a curse due to the physical strain it puts him under. Belos argues that the agony it puts him through is punishment for his weakness.
  • For Want Of A Nail: While in "The Intruder", "one more spell" caused Eda to pass out, here it was two, thanks to Luz accidentally forgetting to press record on her phone.
  • Healing Factor: Here is is revealed that Luz has this when a feral Eda leaves large gash wounds in Luz's arm. Not only does she not even notice at first, but it heals instantly, not even leaving scars.
  • Immediate Sequel: Takes place just minutes after the previous chapter, "Enrolling in Hexside and Making Friends".
  • In Spite of a Nail: While Luz's lack of magic isn't the problem here, she and King still try to sneak one of Eda's elixirs, thinking she uses it to control her magic when it goes wild.
  • Named by the Adaptation:
    • The snaggleback's name is actually Arin.
    • King turns out to be an alias, with his real name being Rí Kralj.
  • Plot Parallel: The chapter begins by establishing that Luz's father Belos is suffering from a life-threatening curse that gives him Phlebotinum Overdose that he treats with a potion. Later, Luz discovers that her mentor Eda likewise suffers from a life-threatening curse that she must treat with an elixir, albeit one that inflicts Death of Personality by turning her into a monster.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: King surmises that Eda uses her elixir to help her control her magic when it goes wild. He's part right, since she uses it to subdue a curse she's under.
  • Wham Episode: King isn't the "King of Demons"... he's actually the Prince of Demons, heir to the kingdom of New Demons Land, and his sister sent him a message that he is scheduled to be coronated.
  • "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Downplayed. Luz knows with complete certainty that Belos loves and cares about his precious "Little Light", but nonetheless worries if she has what it takes to truly make him proud by continuing his impressive legacy. King silently sympathizes with this, reflecting on the relationship he had with his own monarch father.
