Recap / Jackie Chan Adventures S 5 E 12 The Powers That Be Part 1

Go To

In the first half of the Grand Finale, Drago abducts Jackie, Uncle, and Captain Black to force Jade and Tohru to trade the demon powers for their safety. As Jade and Tohru come up with a counter-plan, Drago reveals his dark ambition to Jackie and the others, while at the same time, dissent grows within Drago's ranks which could thwart both Drago's goal and Jade and Tohru's plan to save Jackie and the world.

This episode provides examples of:

  • The Bad Guy Wins: The episode ends with Drago having finally claimed all the demon powers and ready to begin The End of the World as We Know It.
  • Bait-and-Switch: At the end of the clash between Drago and Ice's crew, it looks like Drago won, much to Jade's relief...then he collapses.
  • Blatant Lies: Jade denies being afraid of Shendu when she sees him. He isn't fooled.
  • Bullying the Dragon: Done quite literally, as Ice and his boys smugly mock Drago throughout the episode over the fact that they have powers while he doesn't, even deciding to pull a Starscream by seizing the demon powers themselves. They immediately regret it when Drago gains possession of the powers and becomes superior to them again.
  • Call-Back: After the Ice Gang toss Drago into the bay, Ice calls it a bummer for him, commenting on how Drago hates water.
  • Cliffhanger: The final scene of the episode is Drago using his newfound powers to drop the top of the Golden Gate Bridge on Jackie, Jade, Uncle, and Tohru.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: After absorbing the demon powers, Ice and his boys are able to toss the heroes around easily. In Jackie's defense, however, he was still tied up.
  • Disney Death: After winning their scuffle, Strikemaster Ice and his boys throw Drago into the bay. Drago manages to come back at the last moment and claim the demon powers.
  • The Dreaded: Even as a locked-up statue, Shendu gives Jade the willies.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Drago reveals that he has developed a signature spell for himself, which he uses to claim the demon powers and blast the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Evil Versus Evil: During the climax of the episode, Drago fights Strikemaster Ice and his crew for possession of the demon chi. Ice and his crew win...momentarily.
  • Foreshadowing: When Shendu said that he was the only force that could stop Drago, Jade agreed, but in a metaphorical manner (taking a sample of him to use for Tohru's spell). However, Shendu's comment would end up being more of an Enemy Mine situation.
  • Gambit Pileup: The whole third act involves four different plans going at the same time: Drago planning to obtain the demon chi so he can unleash all the demons in the Netherworld, Jade and Tohru coming up with a spell to stop Drago, Strikemaster Ice and his boys making a bid to claim the demon powers for themselves, and Uncle adjusting the Chi-o-Matic to absorb all the demon chi. Drago manages to outmaneuver everyone and successfully claim the powers.
  • Hope Spot: The hostages almost escape Drago, only to be stopped by Strikemaster Ice and his crew. Drago chastises his underlings for allowing this to happen by not staying at their posts, to which Strikemaster Ice sees this as proof Drago is no longer tough enough to keep them in line.
  • Hostage for MacGuffin: Drago captures Jackie, Uncle, and Captain Black and demands the demon powers as a ransom.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Having lost his fire demon chi, Drago is forced to rely on Strikemaster Ice and his boys (who still have the powers he gave them). Ice and his men really enjoy rubbing it in his face, especially with them being the ones to stop Jackie and the others from escaping.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: When Drago threatens Jade to bring him the demon chi or she'll be spending her wonder years being raised by "that five-hundred pound sumo!", we get this rebuttal:
Tohru: [indignantly] I weigh only four-eighty.
  • Imperfect Ritual: In order for the spell Tohru created to work, a sample of Drago's essence is needed. Jade figures that since DNA is like essence, a sample of Drago's father, Shendu, would also work. It's unknown if the spell would've worked properly with this change as Drago absorbed the powers too quick for Tohru to complete it.
  • Kneel Before Zod: In Drago's Imagine Spot of his planned demon world, Jackie and the others are shown cowering at his feet.
  • New Era Speech: Drago gives one to Jackie, Uncle, and Captain Black when he reveals his main goal for gaining the demon chi.
Drago: See, this world of yours is a real yawn. Want to know why? No demons. They're all stuck down under while you humans run around like you own the place! Is that fair? NO! Well, guess what? Planet's about to come under new management! And my first order of business will be TO TURN THIS WORLD INSIDE OUT! Just imagine! A population of demons running amok, with me, DRAGO, pulling the strings! Pretty soon, it'll be good-bye humanity, hello Demonnvile! Daddy would be so proud.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Despite having a plan to stop Drago, Jade and Tohru still bring him the demon powers, causing him to become the most dangerous threat in the entire series.
  • Papa Wolf: Upon learning that Jackie, Uncle, and Captain Black are missing, Tohru immediately gets Jade out of school so that he can watch over her.
  • Power Nullifier: Jade's plan was to have Tohru create a spell to cause the demon powers to short circuit when Drago absorbed them (possibly destroying Drago in the process). It was a good plan, but due to unexpected circumstances, it was unsuccessful.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Originally, Drago considered an all-out attack on Section 13 to claim the demon powers, but then he realized he didn't need to battle for it "when the containment unit could be delivered in a nice tidy bow".
  • Race Against the Clock: Drago gives Jade until 3 a.m. to deliver all the Demon Chi to the Golden Gate Bridge or else the hostages get roasted.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Because the spell to neutralize the demon powers will only work if Drago absorbs them, Jade reluctantly roots for him to win the fight against Ice and his posse. It doesn't help.
  • Spanner in the Works: Ice and his crew making a bid to claim the demon powers for themselves interfered in Jade and Tohru's plan to stop Drago. As such, when Drago finally began absorbing the powers, Tohru was caught off-guard and unable to complete his spell fast enough.
  • Take Over the World: Drago boasts that he will use the Demon Chi to unleash demons upon the world and enslave humanity. He pictures himself laughing manically, as Jackie, Uncle, Captain Black, and countless others are forced to bow before him amid the ruined city.
  • The Starscream: Strikemaster Ice and his boys become pretty smug when they're the only ones with powers while Drago has nothing, to the point that they decide to make a bid to claim the demon powers for themselves. When Drago successfully claims the chi and becomes more powerful than them again, Ice and his boys are left cowering before him again.
  • Third-Party Deal Breaker: After Ice and his gang decide to turn against Drago and seize the chi for themselves, they renege on the exchange.
Jade: Hey, no Jackie, no containment unit! We had a deal!
MC Cobra: Yeah, well my man, DJ Fist, got the dealbreaker!
(DJ chucks a huge piece of asphalt at Tohru and Jade)
  • To Create a Playground for Evil: Drago reveals that his master plan after claiming the demon powers is to "turn the world inside out" and release all the demons trapped in the Netherworld to create a world with them in charge.
  • Trash the Set: When kidnapping Uncle, Drago and his goons smash through the front wall of his antique shop. The hole remains there in the following episode.
  • Visionary Villain: Drago has a surprisingly clear vision of his goal to create a demon world:
Drago: Just imagine! A population of demons running amok, with me, Drago, pulling the strings!
  • We Need a Distraction: Jackie and Black cause a diversion to allow Uncle to escape so he can get the Chi-o-Matic to stop Drago.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: When describing his villainous plan, Drago remarks that Shendu would be so proud of him.
