Recap / Jack Ryan S 02 E 05 Blue Gold

Go To

Jack and Harry resort to desperate measures to draw out assassin Max. In Venezuela, a stranded Marcus stumbles across a prison camp in the jungle and Greer discovers what Reyes is after.

Tropes:

  • Agony of the Feet: Schenkel shoots Harriet in the foot to keep her from following him to kill Jack. It doesn't work.
  • Artistic License – Education: Annabelle complains about her midterms, which are part of the American education system. A student in a British university wouldn't have to worry about them.
  • Artistic License – Geology: Venezuela having a supply of tantalum ore is significant because it threatens China's monopoly, with potentially huge ramifications in world economics. In real life Western Australia has a steady supply, although that doesn't suit the urgency needed to justify the murders committed to keep the supply secret.
  • Bait-and-Switch Gunshot: Schenkel goes to shoot Jack, only to be shot from behind by Harriet.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Max Schenkel gives his daughter Annabelle a hair stick from Venezuela. It turns out to be a pretty effective knife when she stabs Jack in the hand with it.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Max Schenkel has a daughter, Annabelle.
  • Everyone Has Standards: When Jack asks why Harriet didn't mention Schenkel's daughter sooner, she retorts that using a child as bait to lure her father isn't something she wants to do. At least, she says that's why.
  • Fake-Out Make-Out: Harriet grabs Jack for one of these when Schenkel catches up to them at the Liverpool Street Station. As Max has already seen her, it's more to distract Jack so she can lead Max away while Jack goes after Annabelle. Also possibly a Now or Never Kiss, since she likely expected Max to kill her.
  • Fingore: Annabelle stabs Jack in the hand with a hair decoration her father gave her earlier. This leads him to stop being nice and take her hostage at gunpoint.
  • Gilligan Cut: After Rupert Thorne's death, Jack and Harriet are questioned separately by MI5. In keeping with their established characters, Jack pretty much tells the truth while Harriet lies through her teeth.
Bright: When did you two meet?
    Jack: Last week sometime.
Harriet: I've known Dr. Ryan for about three and a half years. We've done a few interagency operations like this.
Bright: And what else is she not telling us?
Jack: I ask myself that every day.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Annabelle is left with the impression that Jack killed her father, after first taking her hostage. She likely doesn't believe Jack's assertion that her father was a hired killer and thinks Jack is just a murderer. Harriet, who actually shot Max, does nothing to correct this impression as Annabelle sobs in her arms.
  • History Repeats: Harriet was recruited by Max Schenkel when she was a seventeen-year-old student in an English boarding school, the implication being that she was young and vulnerable and he took advantage. The episode ends with Annabelle Schenkel, a student in an English university not much older than seventeen, sobbing on Harriet's shoulder with the implication that Harriet will use her grief to recruit her. And the cycle continues.
  • I Have Your Wife: A rare heroic version when Jack takes Annabelle hostage to lure out Max Schenkel and find out who hired him.
  • Irony: In an earlier episode, Jack used pocket knife given to him by his friend to defend himself against Max Schenkel. In this episode, Annabelle uses a hair pin given to her by her father, Max Schenkel, to defend herself against Jack.
  • MacGuffin: Turns out the rock Gloria gave Greer is tantalum ore, indicating that Venezuela has a supply of tantalum that threatens China's monopoly.
  • Oh, Crap!: Max Schenkel, when he takes Harriet's train ticket from her and realises she and Jack are going after Annabelle.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Having been booted from the case by MI5, Jack just walks up to Thorne's body in broad daylight in front of police and bystanders and takes his keys. He then uses them to get into the dead man's home and go through his computer.
  • Title Drop: Tantalum ore is known as "blue gold" due to its rarity and its uses in manufacturing.
  • Wham Line: Reyes did not hire Max Schenkel.
