Recap / Jack Ryan S 02 E 04 Dressed To Kill

Go To

In Venezuela, Presidential candidate Gloria is beset by offers as President Reyes tries to buy her off, while Greer reaches out to her about her missing husband's research.

Jack, meanwhile, has been booted from the case but continues investigating anyway in London, where he and Harriet track the assassin who attacked him before.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Rupert Thorne is played by Anthony Head, who played Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Max Schenkel kills Rupert Thorne in this manner from across the street, having sent a body double to the meeting in his stead.
  • Call-Back: Jack's first meeting with Thorne reveals the purpose of the satellite Greer was chasing; it's equipped with LiDar, and is used to find mineral deposits in an area.
  • Continuity Nod: When Gloria apologises for getting him up early, Greer dismisses early rising as "an old Navy habit."
  • Honey Trap: Having followed Jack to London, Max Schenkel recruits a man to body double for him by going on a dating app and going home with a gay man. He makes sure to target a man who lives with his sister, so Schenkel can take her hostage and ensure the man does as he's told.
  • MacGuffin: Gloria Bonalde gives Greer one clue of what her husband was working on before his disappearance: a strange rock.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: Ordered back to D.C., Jack calls Senator Chapin and arranges to go to London instead.
  • Shame If Something Happened: When Gloria replies to Reyes' offer by saying she'll think about it (meaning no), he warns her not to think too long. Later, an unknown man gives one of her daughters a bullet and says it's for Gloria.
  • Trespassing to Talk: Harriet Bauman sneaks into Jack's hotel room before he checks in to add weight to her warning that he's in danger from Max Schenkel. Despite their last meeting, he takes her seriously enough to work together, but doesn't actually trust her.
  • Taken Off the Case: After disobeying orders last episode, Jack is deemed "too close" to the mission by November and sent back to D.C. He goes to London instead to investigate a lead.
Harriet: What does the London office say?
    Jack: I don't know, I haven't asked them yet.
Harriet: Why not? Ah. You're not here with the CIA.
Jack: No. I'm here on vacation.
  • Wall Of Crazy: A well-organised version as Jack arranges all the information they have so far on three whiteboards.
November: The mind of Jack Ryan.
Greer: A nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to live there.
  • We Can Rule Together: Having realised Gloria could actually win the election, Reyes approaches her with an offer; join his government in her husband's old position, and when he retires after the next term she'll take over having been groomed as his successor.
  • Wham Line: An example occurs unusually early in the episode, as Jack's first scene has him identifying the mysterious equipment they found last episode; it's mining equipment.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Schenkel draws Thorne out to kill him using a body double whose sister he's taken hostage. It's not established if she's been recovered safely afterwards.
  • Working the Same Case: Played With. Gloria Bonalde isn't "working" the case of her husband's disappearance per se, but when Greer realises he may have discovered something pertinent to the satellite/ weapons smuggling/ mining case, he approaches Gloria hoping they can help each other.
