Recap / Haven S 4 E 5 The New Girl

Go To

Continuing where "Lost and Found" left off, everybody is still shocked that Lexie came out of the door and not Audrey. Jordan angrily points a shotgun at Nathan and orders Lexie to kill him. She refuses. Duke points out that since Lexie doesn't know Nathan, she doesn't love him, and killing him won't end The Troubles. Jordan replies that at least she will have satisfaction and tries to shoot Nathan, but Duke snatches the gun away and smacks it against a Guard member's head. He punches out another Guard member and draws blood. He absorbs it and his eyes turn silver. He roars at Nathan to run and proceeds to beat up several Guard members with his super strength.

Nathan runs into the woods with The Guard in hot pursuit, firing their guns at him. Meanwhile, Lexie asks Jennifer where she is and what is going on. Jennifer explains that they are in Haven, Maine. A Guard member ambushes Nathan and knocks him out. The Guard prepares to execute him. Duke, who had been subdued after his super strength wore off, begs them to stop. Vince says it is out of his hands. Dave again begins ranting that they should not have opened the door, but Vince tells him to shut up. Lexie and Jennifer catch up to them and Lexie fires a warning shot with a stolen gun, ordering them to back off from "Cheekbones". Jordan tries to attack her, but Lexie fires a shot a few inches from her foot and she stops. They have a stalemate until Duke says he's thought of a solution.

At the newspaper office, they lock Nathan and Lexie in a room while they discuss Duke's plan. Jordan complains that it is crazy and will take too long, then suggests they put Lexie back in The Barn. Jennifer says The Barn completely disintegrated after Lexie came out, and she can't hear anything from it anymore. For all intents and purposes, Jennifer is now normal. Vince tells The Guard he agrees to the plan, then tells them to call Dwight.

In the room, Lexie tries to check Nathan's injures. He explains that he has no sense of touch, but when she touches a wound, he winces because he can feel her touch. Nathan assures that The Guard wants to kill him, not her. She explains that for a while, she thought she was just an ordinary bartender, then a stranger opened her eyes to the illusion she was in and helped her get to Haven. He asks if the stranger was Agent Howard, but she clarifies that he was William. Vince lets them out and drives them to the docks, where Duke is waiting. A young man named Josh went to a restaurant with his friend Katie, when he suddenly went berserk and attacked people. The staff managed to lock him in a room. Vince tells Dwight that Nathan and Lexie will take it here and he has another important task to do. When Lexie is out of earshot, they tell Nathan Duke's plan: to have Lexie work with him until she falls in love with him, then have her kill him to end The Troubles. Nathan complains that Lexie is a bartender and not a trained officer, but Vince says that she was successful in dealing with The Troubled in every incarnation. This time will be no different.

Vince leaves and Nathan and Duke hear Lexie scream. They run into the restaurant. She explains that she was trying to find a bathroom when she saw Josh in the room's window. Josh is tearing up the room, ranting that Katie betrayed him. When they try to talk him down, he claims that he isn't Josh. He suddenly draws a knife and slits his own throat.

Back at the police station, Duke questions Katie. She explains that Josh was the best friend of her boyfriend Tyler. Recently, they were in a car accident. While Katie and Josh were unharmed, Tyler was hospitalized, paralyzed from the waist down. Nathan asks Officer Rebecca Rafferty to take Katie home. Officer Rafferty greets Lexie as Audrey and says she's glad she's back, then leaves before she can correct her. Lexie complains that this has nothing to do with her, then asks Nathan for a dollar for the vending machine, mispronouncing his last name Wuornos as "War-Norse". Duke complains that Nathan is acting like a stick in the mud and it is turning Lexie off from him. Nathan figures that someone's Trouble took control of Josh, then says the three of them will question Tyler.

At the hospital, Tyler tells Nathan and Duke that while he was driving, Katie looked at him funny and he suddenly lost control of his body, causing them to crash. They figure it must have been Katie's Trouble. Nathan gives Tyler his business card and Duke gives him a ticket for a free drink at The Grey Gull. Meanwhile, Lexie gets a brain scan and the doctor says there is nothing physically wrong with her. They regroup and discuss The Troubles. Lexie wonders why, given that The Troubles make Haven so dangerous, "Why the hell does anybody still live here?"

Officer Rafferty drives Katie home. Suddenly, Katie stares at her hands in shock and says it worked again. Before Rafferty can stop her, she runs into the street and gets killed by a passing car.

At the crime scene, Lexie says she accepts the The Troubles are real and that it is her duty to help, but she's still freaked out. The other officers keep greeting her as Audrey and she complains. Jennifer arrives and hands her some of Audrey's old clothes, including her old police uniform, but Lexie complains that it is ugly. While Nathan takes Lexie to a place where she can change, Duke admits to Jennifer that he came up with his plan only to stall for time and save Nathan's life. He had no idea The Guard would actually go for it. Jennifer offers to help with the case, but Duke tells her to stay out so she doesn't get hurt. She gets upset and says she will move out of Audrey's apartment now that Lexie will be using it.

Wade enters The Grey Gull to find Jordan drinking. He complains that they are closed and she is stealing, but when he sees how attractive she is, he offers more drinks on the house and hits on her. Dwight arrives and tells her that she found the wrong Crocker. Jordan picks up on his comment and realizes that Wade is Duke's brother. Dwight says he has something important to show her and gives her a lift.

Back at the station, Nathan, Duke, and Lexie go over what they know. Lexie uses her experience as a bartender to pick up on the fact that Katie was cheating on Tyler with Josh. She suggests that Tyler might be the murderer, and Duke figures that he lied about Katie taking control of him. Nathan suggests that Lexie talk to Tyler this time and she agrees. However, when they get back to the hospital, Tyler has disappeared and a dead orderly is lying in his bed.

Nathan checks the security footage and finds that the orderly handed Tyler a TV remote. At that moment, Tyler had a seizure and his body went inert. The orderly was controlled and wheeled Tyler's body out of the room. A few minutes later, the orderly came back, lay in the bed, and injected himself with an empty syringe, killing himself. They figure that Tyler used his Trouble to take control of Josh, then Katie, and then the orderly. To return to his actual body, Tyler has to kill the person that he inhabits. Nathan checks Tyler's EKG chart and finds that Tyler had seizures every time he possessed someone, and they're getting worse, leaving his body in worse and worse shape every time he uses his ability. Duke had been searching the halls for Tyler when Nathan calls him. Duke claims that a sinister orderly is chasing him. Nathan tells him to avoid the man because he's an innocent, possessed by Tyler.

Nathan and Lexie meet up with Duke, who claims that he trapped the orderly inside a large closet. However, when Nathan checks, it is empty. Duke suddenly slams the door into him, grabs his gun, and collects their phones. They realize he is possessed by Tyler and lured them into a trap. Nathan figures that Tyler's Trouble activated after the car accident. Tyler admits that it did and that when he woke up, he discovered that Katie was cheating on him with Josh. He used his new ability to kill them both. Nathan realizes that Tyler has to be in contact with something the person touched to possess them: the TV remote for the orderly, get-well cards from Josh and Katie, and Duke's drink ticket. Since Tyler has Nathan's business card, he can possess him as well even if they do attack and stop Duke. Nathan points out that Tyler's body is dying, but Tyler figures that he can avoid his fate by leaping into someone else's body and staying there. He orders them into the closet and locks it.

Dwight takes Jordan to a secret room where he, Vince, and Dave have been researching everything they could to find an alternate way to end The Troubles. The room has several pictures and articles on Sarah Vernon, Lucy Ripley, Audrey Parker, and now Lexie DeWitt. Jordan suggests that this woman who comes to Haven every 27 years with a new identity is the cause of The Troubles, and if Duke can kill her, then his Trouble will eliminate all other Troubles. Dwight warns that they have no idea if that will actually work, and even if it did, Duke wouldn't kill her in a million years. Jordan begins to ponder.

Tyler-in-Duke goes to The Grey Gull. Wade comes in and tries to talk to his brother, but Tyler ignores him at first. Finally, Tyler asks if someone hypothetically had the power to enter other people's bodies, how would he stay in a stolen body permanently? Confused, Wade says maybe if the person's original body was killed. Tyler says that's actually a good idea and thanks him, then starts taking money out of the cash register. Wade realizes something is wrong and confronts him, but Tyler knocks him down and asks where their safe is.

Lexie watches amused as Nathan pounds on the door with all his strength, but can't break it down. She again pronounces his last name wrong. Nathan suggests they get some pancakes when this is over, but she frowns and says those are gross. Nathan gets depressed, as there seems to be no trace of the woman he loves.

Tyler beats up Wade demanding to know where the safe is, but when he notices Jennifer approaching, he knocks Wade out, hides him, then greets her. She says since it has become clear that they don't need her anymore, she is going back to Boston. Tyler shrugs and tells her to have fun, and she gets upset that "Duke" is treating this so nonchalantly. Tyler, seeing that she is attractive, apologizes and says he wants to come with her, then kisses her on the lips. She is surprised, but kisses back. She asks if he is sure, and he says yes, but first they have to go to the hospital and pay a final visit to a friend.

Lexie finally tells Nathan to stop and let her try to pick the lock. He asks if she knows how to do that because she had a criminal record in her fake life as a bartender, but she says she and her ex-boyfriend were into S&M, annoying him. While she works, he stares at her butt and she catches him. He admits that she is beautiful, but only because she has the same face as Audrey. She is the polar-opposite of Audrey, and Audrey is the only one he loves, not her. Upset, she finishes picking the lock.

Wade wakes up and calls Nathan.

Tyler-in-Duke and Jennifer drive up to the hospital. Tyler calls her "babe" to cover up how he doesn't know her name, and she realizes Duke is not himself. Tyler reaches for his gun, but she stabs him in the leg with a pen and grabs the gun, warning him to stay away from her. He angrily limps into the hospital. Nathan and Lexie come out of another entrance and fill Jennifer in. Earlier, Nathan checked the security footage and confirmed that the orderly never took Tyler out of the hospital, so they figure his original body is still there. Since Tyler has the pen that Jennifer touched, as well as Nathan's business card, they can't confront him without risking him jumping into their bodies. Jennifer points out that Lexie is immune to The Troubles, so she volunteers to go in alone. Nathan says it is too risky, but reluctantly hands her his gun and gives her three minutes before they go in after her.

Lexie finds Tyler's body in the basement. She tries to pull Duke's drink ticket out of his hand, but Tyler-in-Duke appears and knocks her away, sending the gun flying. Tyler threatens her with a fire axe, declaring that there is no way he's going back to his old body. Lexie warns that there is no guarantee that killing his old body will allow him to stay in Duke's body forever, but Tyler roars that he has no choice but to try because his body is pretty much useless now. He asks if she thinks Duke is worth dying for. She sighs and backs away. Tyler plunges the axe into his old body. The blood splatters all over Duke, so he absorbs it and his eyes turn silver. Unused to the power up, Tyler thrashes around asking what is happening. Suddenly, Tyler is horrified to find himself back in his old body, then dies. Duke assures Lexie that he is back to normal and that he was aware the whole time Tyler was possessing him. She asks what happened to Tyler. He explains that part of his Trouble is that when he kills a Troubled person, the Trouble is eliminated. Since Duke's body killed Tyler's, it deactivated Tyler's Trouble so he was automatically ejected from Duke and returned to his body.

Later, Nathan finds Lexie looking through Audrey's belongings at the police station. She admits that she backed away from Tyler because she was scared. She was lucky that Duke's Trouble came through and she didn't really do anything. Nathan assures that her going into the basement meant a lot to Duke. She finds a picture of Nathan and Audrey and asks what their relationship was like back when she was Audrey, and if they ever had sex. He says it's complicated.

Duke goes back to The Grey Gull and checks on Wade. Wade says he knows the Duke who attacked him was an impostor, then asks what is going on. Duke says he is better off not knowing. Duke meets Jennifer. She says she's still moving out of Audrey's apartment and going back to Boston, but he says she's always welcome to stay on his boat. He rephrases that he wants her to stay. He was aware during his possession, and the kiss they shared has awakened feelings for her. She accepts.

Wade goes to the parking lot and finds Jordan wearing a sexy black dress. He figures she's here for his brother, but she says she's here for him.

Lexie contemplates Audrey's apartment. Duke walks up and says he's sure that she didn't back away because she was scared. Rather, she knew that Duke's Trouble would save him, because she's Audrey, not Lexie. After a moment, Audrey says, "Damn it, Duke." and hugs him, admitting that he's right.

  • Accent Upon The Wrong Syllable: Lexie's repeated mispronunciation of Nathan's last name is generally this.
  • Accidental Aiming Skills: Jennifer warns Tyler-in-Duke as she holds him at gunpoint that she's capable of shooting him, but will probably hit him in the face.
  • A-Team Firing: For being an armed paramilitary group, the Guard has terrible aim. Nathan takes off with two members hot on his heels. He's about five feet away, and shoot several times, but each shot misses. It's not until another knocks him out by bashing him with a rifle like a baseball bat that he's down for the count.
  • Anti-Interference Lock Up: Twice to Lexie and Nathan in this episode. Once while the Guard and Duke discuss what to do next, and then again when Tyler-in-Duke locks them in what looks like a repurposed walk-in refrigerator.
  • Batman Gambit: Lexie does nothing when Tyler buries an axe in his own chest, because Audrey knows that Duke's Trouble will kick in and neutralize Tyler's. This is Duke's Spotting the Thread moment and he quickly puts the pieces together.
  • Body Surf: Tyler is able to take over someone else's body, which he uses to get revenge on his girlfriend and best friend, who are together behind his back. He then sets his sights on Duke when he is found out.
  • Call-Back:
    • Lexie scoffs that Nathan is a "tough guy" after he tells her he can't feel the bleeding wound on his head, which is beat-for-beat the same interaction as in the pilot, when Audrey slammed his fingers in the car door.
    • When stepping away from Tyler-as-Duke in the basement, "Lexie" says "I'm sorry, Duke" in a tone far too solemn for someone supposedly scared for her lifeā€”and far more like the way Audrey said it right before asking him to kill Harry Nix, likely contributing to his realization that she's actually Audrey.
  • Chekhov's Gift: Duke writes Tyler a "prescription" for a free round of drinks at the Gull when he gets out of the hospital. This slip of paper is what later allows Tyler to do a Grand Theft Me with Duke.
  • Death by Woman Scorned: Tyler is a gender-flipped example. He kills his girlfriend and best friend, who are together behind his back.
  • Disability Superpower: Tyler's Trouble was triggered after surviving a car accident that left him a paraplegic.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Jordan raids the bar at the Gull, where Wade finds her and suggests different drink options depending on what's ailing her.
  • Everyone Can See It: Tyler-in-Duke picks up on the underlying tension between Duke and Jennifer within seconds after Jennifer walks into the Gull, and exploits it for his own purposes.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Wade doesn't notice his brother has been possessed by Tyler until after he's given Tyler the idea to kill off his own body to keep Duke's permanently. Despite several huge red flags that Duke was Not Himself.
  • Fake First Kiss: Between Duke and Jennifer, because Duke was possessed.
  • From Roommates to Romance: Played with. Duke offers Jennifer the extra room on his boat, pragmatically because Lexie is taking over Audrey's apartment above the Gull (where Jennifer was staying), but also because he does not want her to return to Boston.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Tyler picked the absolute worst person to possess to try out his plan of killing his own body to keep the one he had.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: First on Lexie's list of wants after holding the Guard at gunpoint to prevent them from killing Nathan is a stiff drink.
  • Identity Amnesia: Two fold; Audrey is pretending to be her new identity, and Nathan and Duke have convinced Haven PD that Lexie is just Audrey with amnesia and she should be treated like Audrey to help her remember things.
  • Improvised Weapon: Jennifer stabs Tyler-in-Duke in the leg with a ballpoint pen after she realizes something is very wrong.
  • Indy Ploy: The new plan, to encourage Lexie to fall in love with Nathan so the original plan can still work, was Duke's to keep the Guard from killing Nathan and to buy more time. Nathan is less than enthused.
  • Is It Always Like This?: Jennifer reassures Audrey that "after awhile, you kinda get used to" the craziness after being thrust unceremoniously into Haven's ongoing conflict between the Guard and the gang, answering what was presumably going to be Lexie's next question after asking where she was.
  • It Doesn't Mean Anything: Averted. Jennifer brings up their Fake First Kiss. Duke acknowledges it happened and also points out she was into it before she realized it wasn't him, which she doesn't deny. They leave it at that for now, but their mutual attraction is now out in the open.
  • Kissing Under the Influence: Tyler-in-Duke kisses Jennifer, as he assumes they are together. This understandably takes her by surprise.
  • Murder by Suicide: Tyler must kill his host to be able to jump back into his own body, so he stages suicides of the people he jumps into.
  • The Nicknamer: Lexie refuses to call Nathan by his name, instead by a variety of nicknames and absolute mangling of his last name. Duke thinks "Cheekbones" is Actually Pretty Funny.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Jennifer is suspicious of Duke's odd behavior after Tyler's Grand Theft Me, but it isn't until he calls her "babe" that she puts the pieces together that Duke is Not Himself.
  • Plot Hole: Jordan suggests they just turn Lexie back into Audrey and Vince tells her they can't. They know this because they tried, "a long time ago." This has never been mentioned before, and is never mentioned again.
  • Rewatch Bonus: This episode is so much fun to watch after The Reveal that Lexie is really Audrey:
    • Lexie's Unfazed Everyman reaction to the Guard and being held at gunpoint. She is annoyed but unflinching, as compared to Barn Lexie's freak-outs over the possibility of armed patrons in her bar.
    • Her Improbable Aiming Skills with Nathan's service pistol when Jordan threatens to "take care of her." She gives Jordan a warning shot in the dirt just in front of her feet. This is in contrast to Barn Lexie's Two Shots from Behind the Bar rescue of William, which missed her target by a mile and took out the door frame.
    • Lexie teases Nathan about being a "tough guy" when he says he can't feel his head injury, just as Audrey did in the pilot after slamming his hand in the car door.
    • After Nathan questions Tyler, Nathan spitballs ideas of what the Trouble of the week could be with Lexie and Duke. Lexie specifically refers to people with Troubles as "Troubled," despite the term not being used around her prior.
    • She creates a persona that is basically the anti-Audrey to become someone Nathan could not fall in love with. Drug use, hard drinking, mispronouncing his name...and also a hatred of pancakes.
    • Lexie picks the lock of the room she and Nathan are trapped in, which she hand-waves away as just having boyfriends who were into bondage. Not only would it be pretty impossible to pick the lock the way she's doing while wearing handcuffs, this is a skill Audrey has already demonstrated she's pretty good at.
    • Lexie is a little too good at putting the pieces of the case together, which gets some side-eye from Jennifer and Nathan. She insists she's just "getting used to" Haven's craziness, but post-reveal, this is just Audrey unable to resist her investigative reflexes.
    • Lexie and Duke's scene in the basement is reminiscent of a similar scene in with Henry Nix. See Call-Back above.
  • Romantic Wingman: Duke, thanks to his Indy Ploy, plays this for both Lexie and Nathan...but he's bad at it.
  • Ship Tease: Duke and Jennifer go from subtext to text.
  • Slashed Throat: Josh slashes his own throat in front of Nathan, Duke, and Lexie, though it's later revealed as a murder, not a suicide due to the Troubled person of the week.
  • Wham Line: "Damn it, Duke."
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: Jordan suggests that they have Duke kill Lexie, with the idea that since the Troubles come when she does, the Troubles are her Trouble. Dwight says there's nothing in his research to suggest that.
