This makes Deliverance look like summer camp.
"Walk a mile in someone else's shoes!"

Airdate: October 16, 2006

Scoutmaster Lumpy takes the Tree Friends on a hike. Things go awry when they get lost and the majority of the kids get severely injured.

"Take a Hike" provides examples of:

  • Balloon Belly: Nutty finds a beehive and sucks all the honey out of it, giving him a bloated appearance.
  • Bears Are Bad News: The titular bear that Nutty provokes goes high and low to make sure that Lumpy's camping trip goes horribly wrong.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: While everyone gets a particularly brutal death here, Lumpy has arguably the most painful and violent one in that he gets mauled by a bear. On-screen.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: While Lumpy appearing on the side of the cliff where the bear is would have been a case of bad luck, you see that a sturdy bridge was there the entire time. The implications that the bear traveled there, or was a safer alternative for Lumpy makes it worse.
  • Downer Ending: The hike ends with everyone dying.
  • "Everybody Dies" Ending: No one survives this episode, plain and simple.
  • Eye Scream: Lumpy sucks the venom out of Toothy's wound and spits it on Cuddles's face, horribly blinding him. Special mention goes to the animation of his ocular flesh emerging from the sockets.
    • The baby chick playing with Flaky's optic nerve in the ending counts too.
  • Hope Spot: When Lumpy ascends to the cliff, he believes that he is in the clear, then comes the bear, waiting to maul him.
  • Horrible Camping Trip: The whole episode.
  • Humiliation Conga: Toothy gets a venomous snake bite on his arm, it swells up horribly, then it falls off. At the end, he falls down a cliff and hits a bunch of rocks before he's finally impaled at the bottom.
  • Mama Bear: The mother eagle does not take Flaky's Accidental Murder of her unborn offspring well at all.
  • Misplaced Wildlife: The snake that bites Toothy is a cobra, which is normally associated with tropical climates and not forests.
  • Nature Is Not Nice: Over the course of the episode, we get to learn the effects that dehydration, fire, venom, contaminated water, and enraged bears can have on people.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: The normally Obsessively Organized Petunia becomes so thirsty that she drinks from a pool of water that is very obviously unsafe to drink, which naturally makes her horribly ill.
  • Sequel Episode: This episode is more or less the successor to the season two episode, “A to Zoo”. Featuring the same characters (with the inclusion of Nutty), animals as a main danger, and Lumpy as the would-be responsible adult looking after them.
  • Suck Out the Poison: What Lumpy tries to do to help with Toothy's snake bite. It doesn't work as his arm is still horrifically swollen until it falls off.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Lumpy, Cuddles, Sniffles, Toothy, Petunia, Flaky, and Nutty all die.
