A Vineyard Valentine

Sookie thinks serving oysters on Valentine's day is too cliché. Lorelai is still hesitant to call off the wedding, as it's perfect except for the part where the groom doesn't want it to happen so soon. Rory invites Lorelai and Luke along to Martha's Vineyard for Valentine's weekend. They hit the gym where the girls work out by strolling around the facilities while Luke and Logan play basket ball. Mitchum comes by to get his son. Lorelai discovers that Emily has put a wedding announcement in the paper and told all their relatives without asking her.

Tropes

  • Apologizes a Lot: Logan is sorry he's beating Luke at basketball. Luke tells him to stop apologizing.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • One can wonder why Lorelai wanted a zydeco band to play at her wedding, seeing as she obviously hates their music.
Buzu: Lips say yes, face say no.
    • Luke takes issue with Logan saying Logan had only scored five times when he had scored six.
    • Luke pretends to know what a tennis bracelet is.
  • Brick Joke:
    • The Lorelais spot a machine in the gym that they can't figure out how to operate. The conversation turns to Luke, before a man shows up and wants to use the machine.
Lorelai: Ooh. You push it with you arms
    • Luke picks the necklace to give Lorelai, mainly because he has no idea what a tennis bracelet is. When Logan gives Rory the bracelet, Luke points out that it's a tennis bracelet, prompting Lorelai to say she didn't think he knew what a tennis bracelet even is.
  • Captain Obvious: Rory thinks the difference between regular water and cucumber water is the cucumber
  • The Cynic: Luke doesn't like holidays that greeting card companies benefit from. He also isn't crazy about rich people.
  • Dull Surprise: Mitchum doesn't seem the least bit taken aback by finding two adults he's never met before in a bedroom in his vacation house.
  • Elopement: Luke suggests one. Lorelai likes the idea, but finds she can't do that to Sookie.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Sookie names herself "Sucky" for being unable to come up with something more creative than oysters.
  • Genius Bookclub: Rory is reading Thycudides.
  • Mondegreen Gag: Bill says he got a correction to an interview with professor Wallis, who claims he referred to his department's problems with the advisory board as an "us and them thing", not an "S&M thing".
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Luke and Lorelai turn down food at the Huntzberger vacation house, signalling that they're not comfortable there.
  • Passive Aggressive Combat: Rory feels pressured into reuniting with Logan by being evicted by Paris and moving in with him, so she does a lot of rude things to him for revenge.
  • Shout-Out
    • Logan claims that Keith Richards isn't up at 11:04, nor is Pete Doherty.
    • Rory is looking for her Thucydides.
    • Lorelai claims Herman Melville, author of Moby-Dick, once spent time at Martha's Vineyard.
    • Lorelai claims she met Glenn, aka Luke, reaching for the same Dixie Chicks CD.
    • Rory reads Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking.
    • Stan the racoon played a John Phillip Souza march with the trashcans.
    • The Sound of Music once inspired Rory to wear an apron.
    • Lorelai once had a crush on a guy who looked like Emilio Estevez.
  • Shown Their Work: Saint Valentine was indeed a real saint from 3rd century Roman Empire, and they didn't have greeting card companies back then.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: In-universe it's early 2006, so when Lorelai says "last May" she's talking about the same year as when she says "'05" in the next sentence.
