The Party's Over

Emily learns about Dean and enlists Richard. Liz is back in town and moving in. Kyon, who is an exchange student this semester too, comes begging for food during flax-seed muffin month and rats out Lane's being in a relationship to Mrs. Kim. Emily arranges a party for Rory to meet boys she approves of.

Maid of the week: A lady who may be pretending to only speaks Spanish.
Relative whose existence will later be denied: Mrs. Kim's sister, with whom she crochets for Christ.

Tropes

  • Big Eater: Emily forgets that Lorelai and Rory are this when Richard serves appetizer barbeque, and Lorelai only remembers it again once she's out the door.
  • Blatant Lies: Emily pretends not to have realized she only invited friends with boys to her party.
  • Boyfriend Bluff: Logan saves Rory from Jordan by pretending to be her boyfriend.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Emily is mad that Richard's barbeque appetizers make the girls less hungry when they get to dinner. When Lorelai and Rory walk out of the house after dinner, Lorelai declares that she is hungry.
    • Lorelai makes a mountie hat joke about Luke that she won't let go.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Mrs. Kim starts yelling that he'll burn in hell with Satan's hellhounds eating his innards every day, Zach thinks it's about him trying to read a magazine without buying it first.
  • Continuity Nod: When hearing that Rory is back with Dean, Emily asks if he's the one who made her that car.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point:
    • TJ thinks he can't be ruining Luke and Lorelai's date if he just sits there quietly.
    • Rory thinks Emily and Richard not telling them they got back together would be like them not telling them they broke up. Lorelai tries in vain to explain that that was about it looking bad.
    • Emily claims not to understand what Rory being in a relationship could possibly have to do with her meeting guys at a party.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Rory apparently uses champagne for this. Collin offers to share the scotch he swiped.
  • Fake Relationship: Logan pretends to be Rory's boyfriend so she can lose Jordan.
  • Feminine Women Can Cook: Lorelai's powers defy this trope. She is afraid to stir gravy because she thinks her powers can ruin it.
  • A Good Name for a Rock Band: Zach's only good association to hellhounds is that it's a good band name.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Lorelai claims she's never seen any evidence of Luke's amazing cooking skills.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: TJ denies that he's wearing Liz's shoes, then defends himself by referring to their wedding vows about "what's mine is yours".
  • Magical Asian: Invoked. Mrs. Kim has told Kyon she can read minds.
  • The Mentor: Lane decides to teach Kyon how to deal with Mrs. Kim's strict rules.
  • My Secret Pregnancy: Emily kept Lorelai's pregnancy secret until she was in her eighth month.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Lorelai covers for Rory when Dean calls her at Friday night dinner, but Rory figures the best policy is to tell Emily that she and Dean are back together. Next thing she knows, her grandparents are throwing her an all-boy party of eligible bachelors her age, all from their social stratum. She is unmoved, but when Dean sees how well she fits in among the rich, he realizes he can't be with her and dumps her.
  • Passive-Aggressive Kombat: Emily is no fan of Dean/Rory.
  • Pun: Luke cooks artichokes, and Lorelai quips that they may have choked Artie, but they won't choke her.
  • Requisite Royal Regalia: Richard swears he bought Emily's diamond ear rings from Knud, Hereditary Prince of Denmark.
  • Shipper on Deck: Anti-shipper, in Emily's case. She is against Dean and Rory being together, so she sets her up with all the college-age boys whose parents she knows. It actually works in that it breaks up Rory and Dean, but doesn't get Rory a new boyfriend right away.
  • Shout-Out:
  • The Reason You Suck:
    • To Mrs. Kim, it's that Zach kissed her daughter.
    • Liz gets fed up with T.J.'s tantrums.
  • Third Wheel: T.J. is scared to go home to Liz after their fight, so crashes Luke and Lorelai's date.
  • Threat Backfire: Emily tells Lorelai and Rory they better still be hungry when they come to the house, "or elseā€¦". Lorelai and Rory are inspired to eat more appetizers.
  • Visual Pun: Lorelai shows up to her date with Luke dressed in a maid uniform and declares that it's the closest he'll get to her cleaning up after dinner.
