Tropes

  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Rory sees people shooting paintballs at people throwing themselves off a ramp and landing on a thick mat. She asks one of the shooters if that is safe. He just replies "no" without bothering to look at her.
  • Babies Make Everything Better: Inverted with divorces, as discussed by Emily. Just Emily.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Finn complains that they had to leave at an ungodly hour. Rory points out that it is four in the afternoon.
  • Blatant Lies: Trying to come up with a hobby he can claim instead of golf, Luke lands on reading.
    Luke: You know, books.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Outside the Gilmore mansion, Lorelai grabs a metal object to draw the plan for Luke in the flowerpot. A minute later the maid opens the door, Lorelai is still holding the thing, and Luke offers to put it back for her.
    • Lorelai claims to be late on account of honking at someone with a bumper sticker that said "honk if you scubadive". It sounds made up, but when informed that her mother supposedly honked, Rory comments, "oh, another bumper sticker". At the end of the scene, Rory says to honk if Emily Gilmore treats your life as her personal playground, leaving Lorelai with no choice but to reply "honk honk".
  • Captain Obvious:
    • Lane points out that she and Zach have band practice at the same time because they're in the same band.
    • Luke explains what roadkill is to prove that he knows.
    • Lorelai doesn't think refusing to golf with her father is a good way to establish a relationship with him; she thinks it's the way to end a relationship with him.
      Lorelai: God, you're slow.
    • Logan says in defense of the bungee jumping that everyone's gonna die someday.
      • Rory points out that for the people jumping, it's today.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Brian doesn't understand why the exact same activity can be hanging out one day and a date the next.
    • Rory comments that she's never been so high. When Logan says "me neither" she says she meant in terms of distance from the ground.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Gorilla girl.
  • Foreshadowing: Rory's reluctance to participate in Life and Death Brigade activities hints that she doesn't really want to be like Christiane Amanpour, a foreign correspondent who walks around near explosions to report on the fighting going on.
  • Hypocrite: Lorelai has discovered that people with bumper stickers don't actually want you to honk if you do the thing the bumper sticker says to honk if you do.
  • Irony: Rory won't give up her source to her editor, but her source is on his staff.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Logan does this deliberately. When Rory tries to ask him about "whatever's going down tomorrow" at the Brigade meeting, he just keeps talking about how he had to fight to get the other members to let him bring her to the meeting.
  • Product Placement: Probably subverted with the kalashnikov.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Brian is excited to go into Lane's room because it smells good.
  • Shout-Out
  • Stealth Insult: Everything Emily says to Luke.
    • The most blatant one is perhaps when she walks out of the house and declares that some idiot parked a filthy truck in their driveway, as though she doesn't realize it's Luke's.
  • Third Wheel: Brian inserts himself into Lane and Zach's date.
  • Title Drop: Rory says the Titanic (1997) quote to Logan at the top of the bungee jump tower.
  • Verbal Backspace: Logan claims no one in the Life and Death Brigade has ever died. Well, except old ones, of old age.
