Keg! Max!

Lorelai and Rory are having a hard time thinking of something to do instead of Friday night dinner. Lorelai is made grad night treasurer by the Booster club. Lane's band play at a house party which gets out of hand. Lorelai invites Luke and Nicole to spend the night at the inn. Lorelai and Max agree to stay away from each other, and Rory decides she doesn't want to have sex in Kyle's parents' bedroom. Jess is a bit annoyed by the rejection and the partygoing and snaps at Rory. Rory starts to cry, she runs into Dean, one thing leads to another, and the police arrive.

Pets: Michel's chow puppies, especially Paw-Paw, who is stated to be female. She fell in her water bowl and Michel feels like a bad daddy.
Max's California girlfriend: Diane.

Tropes

  • Added Alliterative Appeal: Paucity of participation.
  • Arc Number: 21. If not for Rick being really into that particular integer, the keg party could not have happened.
  • Bathroom Search Excuse: Lorelai goes looking for Max during the Booster club meeting and runs into a janitor. She asks for directions to the bathroom, which he gives her, but it's in the opposite direction of Max's classroom, so she changes it to "looking for a bathroom farther away."
  • Blatant Lies: Lorelai claims the eighteen bucks are missing from her box because she dropped it in the parking lot, apparently feeling confident enough that the Boosters took it themselves before they gave her the box, so as not to have to chip in eighteen dollars of her own money.
  • Captain Obvious: Jess has to explain to the other kids at the party that you need a tap to tap the beer from the keg. Including to the guy who brought the keg.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Lorelai jokingly offers Max an aspirin, then immediately apologizes for bringing up the item he was looking for when they kissed.
    • Lorelai mentions still dating Alex.
  • Deteriorates Into Gibberish: Asked to introduce the band, Rory covers up that she doesn't know the band name (which hasn't been decided yet) by calling them "Nuh-huh-HUH" and quickly removing herself from the stage.
  • Escalating Brawl: The fight between Dean and Jess, which ended up outside on the front lawn.
  • Foreshadowing: Lorelai tells Rory that if her belt comes off for any reason during the party, she doesn't want her coming home. At the party, Jess comes onto her, and she rejects him.
  • Freudian Excuse: Defied by Michel. He read in a book that you have to show your chow puppies love and attention, otherwise they'll murder you later. He takes time out of his work day to show them love and attention.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Zach wants to name the band Follow Them To The Edge Of The Desert, which is not too long because fans will shorten it to F.T.T.T.E.O.T.D.
  • Godwin's Law: Paris feels that having grad night on a yacht is the same sort of mistake as Neville Chamberlain thinking Hitler was "a stand-up chap."
  • A Good Name for a Rock Band: Zig-Zagged wildly. Suggestions are "The Harry Potters" and "Follow Them To The Edge Of The Desert." "Devil's Advocate" is considered. "The Chops" is mentioned. Brian suggests "The We."
  • Irony: Lorelai lampshades the irony in laying off the guy who can light fireplaces because of a fire, so now they can't light the fireplaces.
  • Loose Lips: Lane gets drunk and calls her mother to spill all kinds of beans.
  • Love Informant: Inverted. Dave learns that Young Chui is in love with Lane by observing that he acts like it, and Lane being hesitant to answer.
  • Metaphorgotten: Lorelai thinks not knowing whether Max wants to get back together is like when you can't choose your item off a Steak & Lobster menu because you don't know what your date wants, because if you get steak and he gets lobster you can share. And if not, you can get Surf 'n Turf, which makes you look like a pig, but some guys are into that.
  • A Rare Sentence: "Just keep a really big basketball player between us" —Max, who seems to think a basketball player is ten feet tall. Lorelai figures being uttered is a first for that sentence.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Did Joan take the missing eighteen dollars? If not, what happened to them?
  • Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Chilton sends Lorelai a letter accusing her of "paucity of participation."
  • Shave And A Haircut: Lorelai can't stand it when people do this without "two bits." Rory uses it to get her to promise to stop saying she has an idea then not saying what the idea is.
Rory: It's like when someone does Shave and a Haircut without the last part.
    Lorelai: Come on. Say it.
Rory: Will you stop giving me half-finished thoughts?
    Lorelai: Yes, just say it.
    Rory: Two Bits.
  • Shout-Out
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Dave tells Yong Chui very specifically that he wouldn't want him to get electrocuted and die.
  • Verbal Backspace: Lorelai is about to tell Rory that she and Max kissed a few episodes ago, but backs out and says she means to keep her promise to not get back with him.
  • Wild Teen Party: The party is fairly sane and calm until Dean and Jess get in a misunderstanding.
