Recap / Frasier S 02 E 16 The Show Where Sam Shows Up

Go To

When Sam Malone from Cheers visits Seattle to catch up with Frasier, he soon confesses to Frasier that he wants his advice about marriage since he's about to marry someone and things get interesting when his fiancé happens to be a woman that Frasier once had relations with.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: When Roz meets Sam, she makes it clear she's heard a lot of stories about him from Frasier, mostly about his womanizing ways... and then makes it clear this is, unsurprisingly, not a turn off for her.
  • Birds of a Feather: Sam Malone and Roz Doyle meet and it takes them all of about 20 seconds to start hitting on each other. Frasier comments on how animals can probably sense this in fear. However, nothing comes of it.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Sam never learns that Frasier slept with Sheila, thus preserving his friendship with him, but breaks off his engagement with Sheila anyway upon learning she slept with Cliff. Frasier is equally disturbed by this information.
  • Comic Sutra: Sam offers Niles some bedroom tips that will really help him impress Maris. He whispers it so we don't get to hear the full explanation, just Niles' response:
Niles: Exactly where am I supposed to find whipped cream and a car battery at this time of night?
Sam: You got neighbors, don't ya?
  • Everyone Has Standards: As shown over in Cheers, Sam has very few rules about who he'll sleep with, and when he learns Sheila has slept around even when they're both sex addicts, he's not too bothered, even when she mentions having slept with Paul (short, chubby, balding Paul). But when she mentions she also slept with Cliff... well...
  • Happy Ending Override: Sam's reunion with Frasier has him fill him in on the goings-on at Cheers. Apparently Rebecca's marriage went belly up when Don got rich and dumped her, which Rebecca predicted would happen. Now she's back at Cheers. Just not working there.
  • Here We Go Again!: At the ending, Sam begins to lust after a cocktail waitress at the airport bar, much to Frasier's dismay.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Martin is overjoyed at the thought of Sam being in Frasier's apartment. He even lets him sit in the chair.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Nile's status as a New Guy gets brought up when he's miffed Frasier apparently never mention him to the Cheers gang. (Sam says he probably did, but they just tuned him out. Nope. Niles was never once even hinted at during the show.)
    • Sam joked that when he met Frasier he looked exactly like Niles. David Hyde Pierce was hired explicitly because he looked like a younger Kelsey Grammer.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: Sam show's up while Frasier is in the middle of doing a promo, catching him completely off-guard:
Frasier: Well, that's our show for today. Don't forget, (Roz starts signaling to him) Bob "Bulldog" Briscoe is up next, oh yes, this is K-ACL Cash Call Week, $5,000 if you answer your phone with the phrase that pays, so when your phone rings, don't say hello, say (Sam walks up to the window) well blow me down!
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: When last seen in Cheers, Woody and Kelly were expecting a child. Sam tells Frasier that said kid has, against all the odds, turned out to be intelligent.
  • Properly Paranoid: Niles is always hostile to anyone else showing an interest in Daphne to begin with, but is pretty justifiably concerned when Sam, a recovering sex addict with an abundance of charm, starts flirting with her, and she reciprocates.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Subverted by Martin, when Daphne says she doesn't understand why sports figures are so revered in America, when they seem so superficial to her.
Martin: Yeah, it's not like they do anything real important, like sit on a throne or christen ships.
  • Series Continuity Error: Actually lampshaded. On an episode of Cheers, Frasier said that his dad died and was a scientist. Once Frasier introduces Martin to Sam, he explains that he and Martin recently had a spat and made up the story out of spite.
  • Special Guest: Ted Danson as Sam Malone and Téa Leoni as Sheila.
  • The Tag: Frasier drives home while repeating 'Cliff' over-and-over again, still disturbed by Sheila's news that she slept with Cliff.
