Recap / Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends S3E1 "Eddie Monster"

Go To

After Bloo calls him a big scaredy baby, Eduardo runs away from the home to prove that he is not a coward and Mac, Bloo, Wilt and Coco search for him. Meanwhile, Terrence is looking for an imaginary friend to compete in the Extreme-O-Saur Battle, and he comes across Eduardo and decides to use him to fight against huge imaginary friends at the junkyard.

Tropes for this episode include:

  • Brick Joke: Bloo creates a dummy of Eduardo to take the real Eduardo's place. At one point, Mr. Herriman is seen playing checkers with the dummy in the park, waiting for it to take its turn. In The Stinger, Herriman is still in the park, waiting for the dummy to take its turn.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Eduardo pushes Terrence into the crate with the Pikachu Extremosaur, resulting in him getting shocked. When Terrence comes out, he cries for his mother and wets himself. Eduardo has this to say, "Who's the scaredy-baby now?"
  • The Cameo: Dexter and Ed, Edd n Eddy make appearances.
  • Continuity Nod: One of the places that Mac and the imaginary friends search for Eduardo is the Game Hive arcade from "Squeakerboxxx". Bloo is even seen cashing in his tickets for Dracula teeth.
  • Cowardly Lion: Eduardo. When Terrence puts Mac, Bloo, Coco and Wilt in the box housing the Pikachu Extremasaur, Eduardo orders him to get them out. Terrence then tells Eduardo to get them out himself to prove he's not scared. Eduardo does so, managing to stay calm in the face of adversity to rescue his friends.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Terrence and Eduardo are the main focuses of the episode (the former has this episode be his biggest role in the entire show).
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Mac, Coco, and Wilt are willing to accommodate Eduardo with less stressful and safe activities but even they become annoyed and frustrated when Eduardo's cowardice counter with each suggestion drives them away.
    • The Imaginary Friend fighting ring allows — even encourages — cheap shots and dirty tricks. However, attempting to fix a fight is grounds for immediate disqualification.
  • Hidden Depths: Eduardo shows to be quite the formidable and tough fighter when he chooses to be.
  • Irony: Bloo's brashness ironically gave Ed the push to leave his comfort zone and become braver.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: As mean as Bloo was for calling Eduardo a 'big scaredy cat' but if the most harmless inanimate object like a whisbee freak Ed out, thinking it's a monster that's trying to eat him and thus ruining the game, so while Bloo's insult is harsh it is warranted. It's also quite telling that Mac, Coco, and Wilt were awkwardly silent when Eduardo tries to get them to back him up that he isn't showing that they secretly agree with Bloo, but don't want to hurt Eduardo's feelings and try to think of another activity for the group to do.
  • Never My Fault: Bloo refuses to accept it's his own fault Eduardo ran away and when he apologizes, he apologizes for "what the others said about him earlier." and not for what he said earlier.
  • Ocular Gushers: Eduardo cries when he has to fight a giant robot. His tears cause the robot to rust.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Terrence teams up with Eduardo and compliments him on his acts of bravery. He also made him a costume and gave him a bag of potatoes; he even peeled them. Granted, he was using Eduardo to his own advantage, but still showed generosity nonetheless.
    • After Eduardo saves his friends from the champion, Bloo admits that Eduardo isn’t a scaredy baby that he thought he was until a flying whisbee freaks Eduardo out again.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The champion resembles Pikachu from Pokémon.
    • The monster that Eduardo is planned to fight and the other imaginary friends substitute for is called Lemony Wicked Awesome.
  • Toilet Humor: A literal example; one of the Extremeosaurs imagined by teenagers is a sentient urinal. Wilt is not amused.
Wilt: Sorry, but, teenage boys come up with the grossest imaginary friends. I mean, they are seriously disgusting.
Urinal Extremeosaur: I know you are, but what am I?
Wilt: (rolls his eyes) And real mature.
  • Totem Pole Trench: Bloo, Coco, and Wilt do this to pretend to be a monster called Lemony Wicked Awesome to fight against Eduardo. Bloo forms the head, Coco forms the torso, and Wilt forms the legs.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Mac sees Terrence holding a sack of potatoes, Terrence tells them that he's not going to give them to Eduardo so he can eat them before he fights the fights the Extremasaur Ultimate Battle Tournament.
