Recap / Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends S2E13 "My So-Called Wife"

Go To

When a rich benefactor shows up at Foster's, he mistakes Mr Herriman and Coco for a married couple. Now Herriman has to keep up the charade by teaching Coco how to be a proper high-society lady. Meanwhile, Mac teaches Bloo sarcasm.

Tropes:

  • Acquainted with Emergency Services: Mac, Bloo, Coco, Mr. Herriman, and several other people are thrown in jail for a night after the phony benefactor threw a fake gala in someone's mansion without permission and the owner has everyone arrested for trespassing. Everyone was released from jail in the morning, leading to Bloo saying goodbye to the police officer.
    Mac: What a crazy night.
Bloo: Eh. I had worse. (to a police officer) Good seeing you again, Charles. Say hi to the kids for me.
    Charles: Will do, Bloo.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Mac, Bloo, Coco, Mr. Harriman and the gala guests went through all those competitions and humiliation for nothing when Ben E. Factor turned out to be a phony, and got everyone arrested for trespassing. While Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, nor Mac and Bloo, won a large sum of money from that phony benefactor, Coco laid an egg with more than enough money for Foster's, as well as the jet cars Mr. Herriman promised.
  • Character Development: Courtesy of the Two Lines, No Waiting format. Herriman learns to accept Coco's eccentricities, and Bloo recognises sarcasm.
  • "Just Joking" Justification: When the benefactor turns out to be a phony, he defends himself by saying he was "being sarcastic". Bloo, having just taken a crash course in sarcasm, calls him out on it.
  • Karma Houdini: Ben E. Factor, in this case, considering the fact that the minute he revealed that he's not wealthy at all, he makes a break for it while every guest in the mansion, including Mac, Bloo, Coco, and Mr. Harriman, were arrested for trespassing by the real owner.
  • Not What It Looks Like: When the benefactor sees Coco's beak pressed up to Herriman's mouth, he assumes that they're a couple, which Mr. Herriman attempts to deny until the benefactor states that the only thing he considers worth around the house is Herriman's supposed relationship with Coco, which leads to...
  • Punny Name: The benefactor introduces himself as "Benjamin Edward Factor III, Esq., DDS".
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: Herriman being forced to play along with the assumption that he and Coco are a couple for the slimmest chance of getting a substantial donation to Foster's.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Bloo doesn't recognize the sarcastic tone Herriman adopted, forcing Mac and Frankie to explain the concept to him. While he is capable of using it from the start, he doesn't recognize when others use it until towards the end of the episode.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Zig-Zagged. When Herriman agrees to acquire jet cars for Bloo and Mac, he does it with a sarcastic tone, which Bloo doesn't recognize, but Mac does. However, he keeps his promise at the end, and it turns out he wasn't being sarcastic. But when he makes another statement at the end that ALSO sounds sarcastic, Bloo and Mac are left scratching their heads at whether or not Herriman was being sarcastic.
  • Skewed Priorities: Herriman tries to give Coco lessons on proper dining etiquette, and she proceeds to ignore the spoons and jumps into the soup bowl. Herriman seems more concerned that she's sitting on the fine china.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: Once the benefactor leaves Foster's and invites Herriman and Coco to his gala for a chance at the donation, Herriman is left standing in horror with his eye twitching at the realization that he will have to maintain the facade of Coco being his wife and bring her to the gala, all while she runs around the kitchen banging together a pot and its lid with her beak.
    Herriman: (facepalming) Oh, we're doomed.
