After Jouchirou leaves overseas to cook at high-class restaurants, Soma must face his Tranfer Admission test for Tootsuki Academy. Said test is being supervised by the Principal's granddaughter, Erina Nakiri, who is also known in the business as "God's Tongue".
This episode provides examples of:
- Adaptation Expansion: Senzaemon Nakiri is briefly seen hiding in the dark watching Soma's test. Also in this version, Senzaemon does strip partially after tasting Soma's dish, while in the manga he just smiled.
- Alpha Bitch: Erina dismisses quickly any cook who can't bring her a dignified dish for her palate and has a disdain for lower class cooking.
- Character Title: "God's Tongue" refers to Erina.
- Child Prodigy: According to the rumors, Erina's first words as a baby was when she was three months old to criticize her mother's breast milk. Also, she has been serving as a consultant for High-Class Restaurants since early age.
- The Dreaded: Only with the revelation that Erina Nakiri was the examiner, everyone but Soma ran away from the test immediately, preferring to flee than have her rejection haunt them for the rest of their careers.
- Establishing Character Moment: During The Stinger, Senzaemon Nakiri's very first scene shows him sampling Soma's dish quietly, disrobing only the left side of his yukata (which for the ones who had read the manga knows that's his Seal of Approval) and destroying the rejection signed by his own granddaughter.
- Evolving Credits: The rotating dish in the opening changed. For the ending "Spice", the foodgasm reaction is from Erina.
- Furo Scene: In her Imaginary Spot, Erina is seen in a Hot Spring with a gorilla in it.
- Fangirl: Hisako's reaction is of pure joy when Erina offers her to test some of her new dishes after the examination. Also she gets very apprehensive regarding Erina, since she got enraged when Soma just touched her shoulder.
- Gratuitous English: "Hey, Jo!" Makes sense seeing how Soma's father is in New York.
- Impossibly Delicious Food:
- Jouchirou's cooking in New York is so popular that big important people are desperate for eating it. An obese doctor with high-blood-pressure is loudly praising him, a politician recovers his ambition with just eating his food, and a priest rips off his clothes and declares that he would throw away his vows if his religion prohibits him from eating Jouichirou's food.
- Erina, who at that point was shown to be a Picky Eater with high standards and a very sophisticated sense of taste, got weak on the knees with just tasting Soma's Furikake Rice, to the point she felt like "Angels caressed her with their feathers". Too bad her pride didn't let her admit it.
- Out of sight, Senzaemon disrobed when tasting that same dish and decided to admit Soma into Tootsuki.
- Male Gaze: Once again, in both Erina's Imaginary Spots has her focusing on her naked body (in the Furo Scene the shots are of her boobs and legs, while in the second one, little angels are trying to undress her from her very small toga).
- Naked People Are Funny: A fasting monk tears off his robe after discovering that Soma's father is cooking in New York City.
- No Badass to His Valet: Soma is the only person in the room who didn't care about Erina's reputation even after being told about it, repeatedly ignoring her attempts to scare him away from taking the trial.
- No Name Given: Averted in Hisako's case. In the manga, her name wasn't revealed until chapter 52, while in this episode, Erina addresses her by her first name.
- Only the Worthy May Pass: Totsuki Academy already has a low graduation rate, but it's a challenge getting in due to an entrance exam that only involves making a good dish from a specific ingredient theme. Erina's reputation makes this exam a lot more difficult (if not impossible), because of her overly-refined palette.
- Pride: Erina instantly rejects Soma after just looking at him and what he planned as his entry dish, until he encouraged her to give it a try. Even though Erina enjoyed Soma's Furikake Rice enough to give it three bites, she still rejected his application out of spite, because giving someone like him an approval would go against her reputation and high standards.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Unknown to everyone, Senzaemon Nakiri himself was hiding behind a door to watch Soma's test. Thanks to this and a taste of his dish, Senzaemon overrode Erina's verdict and admitted Soma to the school.
- Red Baron: Erina is known in the culinary world as "God's Tongue" because of her extraordinary sense of taste.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After Erina gave an Intimidation Speech, almost everyone (except for Soma) opted to run away very fast, as they feared more Erina's rejection.
- Serious Business: Your reputation as a chef rides on how successful you are if attending Totsuki. A rating from the "God Tongue" Erina is an even bigger version of this, since a bad rating from her is said to kill your rep in an instant. This is why most of the applicants bail when they learn she will host the entrance exam.
- Ship Tease: Aside from the Belligerent Sexual Tension from Erina towards Soma, there's also a bit of Hisako towards Erina, where Erina is tempting her with the chance of tasting her dishes, and Hisako's delighted reaction to her.
- Spoiled Brat: Many of the rich kids that intend to study at Totsuki, Nikaido snubs Soma as soon as he learns his origins and starts crying to his parents over the phone once Erina was revealed as his examiner. Also Erina herself, who is so used to high-class cuisine that she dismissed Soma's talent without even tasting what he prepared, and still fails him due to her pride even though she shows signs of enjoying the dish.
- Upper-Class Twit: Yoshiaki Nikaido's first scene shows him drinking a cup of tea on a bench while waiting for his entrance examination. When meeting Soma, he immediately assumes Soma's restaurant must be a High-Class one like his, only to reject him immediately once he is told it's just a middle-class business.
