Original Air Date: April 17, 2015

At the Welcoming Ceremony, Soma becomes infamous between the student body thanks to his speech. Just as Megumi Tadokoro, who is at the edge of getting expelled from Tootsuki, gets paired with Soma at the class of Professor Chapelle, one of the most strict teachers of the School.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Adaptation Expansion:
    • We get to see Ibusaki, Marui, Ryoko and Yuuki talking, and Takumi and Isami's reactions towards Soma. Ikumi, Akira, Miyoko, Nao, Alice and Ryou are also glimpsed.
    • While Soma and Megumi were having their class with Professor Chapelle, we get to see Takumi complaining that he didn't get into the same class as Soma so they can have a match. Yuuki and Ryoko are in the same classroom as them.
  • Attack of the Monster Appendage: Just like Mayumi, Megumi also got a taste of Soma's horrible experiments, and by that it means it wasn't just one test dish, the first being his "Squid Tentacles pickled in Honey", which gave her the sensation of being groped by golden tentacles.
  • Badass Boast:
    • The very first impression Soma gives to everyone in the school that they will be his stepping stones. This naturally earned him the collective hatred of almost everyone there. Worth noting that it was exactly the same thing Erina was thinking.
    • Knowing about Erina's pride, Soma vows to make a dish delicious enough that she has no choice but to admit it.
  • Berserk Button: Saying "Soma Yukihira"'s name in front of Erina has become this for her.
  • Brutal Honesty: Courtesy of Soma twice. First, in front of his entire student body by declaring that he will use them as stepping stones and take over the Number One spot. The second one is towards meek Megumi.
  • Book Dumb: Subverted. Initially, Megumi panicked becuase Soma didn't have a clue about basic French Cuisine (knowledge required for Professor Chapelle's class) or even pronounce the subject's French name. To fix their sabotaged dish, Soma revealed that he had been reading cooking tips and had been experimenting a lot with substitutes, which gave him the idea of using honey to make the meat tender in a shorter time.
  • Cassandra Truth: Soma believes Erina secretly passed him despite the circumstances from last episode, but she fully denies it. Neither of them know that Erina's grandfather is the one who overturned the result.
  • Character Title: The title refers to Professor Chapelle's nickname.
  • Cherry Blossoms: The entrance speech for the 1st Years is staged with these.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Senzaemon Nakiri's opening speech to the students. He briefly describes the type of subjects they will learn and the small percentage of students that will pass is less than 1% of them and encourages the 93rd generation to be worthy of the school.
  • Death Glare: After his infamous introduction speech, half of the school has been glaring at Soma so much that even Megumi could feel the tension in the air.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Plenty of the prominent students are seen in the crowd of the Highschool 1st Years: Takumi and Isami Aldini (they originally were introduced in the Training Camp arc, and both of them actually have lines), Ryoko Sakaki, Yuuki Yoshino, Shun Ibusaki, Zenji Marui, Shoji Sato and Daigo Aoki (in the manga they debuted after Soma earned his stay at the Polaris Dorms) and brief takes of Ikumi Mito wearing her knife, Nao Sadatsuka (stalking Erina with binoculars), Ryou Kurokiba and Alice Nakiri, Miyoko Hojou and Akira Hayama (sniffing a stick of cinnamon) between the other students. We get to see Urara Kawashima as the Welcoming Ceremony Host.
    • In the same manner, we also get to see obscured images of the Legendary Alumni when Erina was berating everyone else in her inner monologue.
  • Evolving Credits: The rotating dish in the opening changed. For the ending "Spice", the foodgasm reaction is from Megumi.
  • Gratuitous French: Roland Chapelle, their French Cooking teacher, said many words in his language. The humor comes from Soma being unable to understand them (when Chapelle said "apprentis", Soma thought he said "Apple Tea"). He couldn't even pronounce correctly "Beef Bourguignon".
  • Harsh Word Impact: Without any tact, Soma mutters in front of Megumi how come they have students like her at that strict Academy.
  • Hypocritical Humor: While Erina was thinking for herself that everyone in her year was destined to fight over the second place below her, it's Soma who actually says this in public.
  • Impossibly Delicious Food: This time, the Beef Bourguignon Soma gave both Megumi and Professor Chapelle the sensation of being bathed in golden Honey fountains.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The two students who ruined Soma and Megumi's stew were so distracted by the praise they got that their sauce started to burn, and in the momentary panic, one of them ended up spilling their whole container of salt into their dish, giving then an "E".
  • Male Gaze: This time Megumi gets two Imaginary Spot scenes: one of her having a honey shower, and the other being molested by tentacles ripping off her clothes.
  • Mood Whiplash: Just as Megumi's tension is increasing every second while staring at the pot, Soma cheerfully calls her to talk about the classroom pantry.
    • After considering Soma is special, he promptly makes Megumi eat honey-pickled squid.
  • Nervous Wreck: Megumi is at one "E" grade away from expulsion, so this is enough to have her staring nervously at the pot and count every passing minute.
  • New Transfer Student: Soma gets introduced to the entire school as the New kid. Unfortunately, he chooses to make an unforgettable first impression.
  • Non-Uniform Uniform: Unlike the other students who wear white chef uniforms, Soma uses his Yukihira's black shirt.
  • Oh, Crap!: Out of the people who hated Soma from his speech or got even more pumped up by it (like Takumi), the ones who didn't have this expression after hearing it (The Polar Star residents and Urara) were actually fearing the consequences on his behalf.
    • Then Megumi has it frequently when she is assigned to be Soma's partner, as Soma doesn't know basic French cooking terms or the simple fact that half of the school hates him.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Professor Chapelle. To the shock of the entire class, Soma manages to make his smile as well.
  • Prone to Tears: Megumi. She cried at least three times during this episode.
  • Red Baron: Professor Chapelle is known between the students as "The Chef who doesn't smile".
  • Reasonable Authority Figure:
    • Professor Chapelle, having watched everything in the classroom, could notice that Soma and Megumi were sabotaged. Before tasting thei dish and noticing how tender their beef was, he pointed out that they had an "accident", hinting that he knew everything that happened but chose to not intervene to see if they could bounce back. After seeing that they did bounce back and how they did it, he gave them the highest praise he has ever given, clearly impressed at such quick thinking and culinary savvy.
    • Senzaemon Nakiri smiled lightly when he could hear Soma's response to Erina's arrogant "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
  • Shrinking Violet: Three years of bad grades at Tootsuki made Megumi fear for her life, even doubting every single step of her work at class.
  • Tempting Fate: During the opening ceremony, while someone who passed the high school transfer test is making their introduction Erina is reminded of Soma and reassures herself that she has already seen the last of him. Then she casually checks who the person was passed was...
    • Just as Megumi was determined to be invisible to survive at school, she gets paired with the most hated guy at school.
    • Happens again just as Megumi was thinking that being partners with Soma was the best thing... then she gets fed with his failed experiments.
  • Transfer Student Uniforms: The jacket Soma wears seems to be the black gakuran from his previous school, while the Tootsuki highschool jacket is navy blue with white borders on the collar, with pleaded brown pants and tie.
  • Truth in Television: There is an "E" grade used in Japan, which is a variation of an "F".
  • Voice of the Legion: Erina speaks in this when telling Hisako never to say Soma's name in her presence.
  • Worthy Opponent: One sided on Takumi's. While Soma still hasn't meet him yet, Takumi made his goal to defeat him. It can be seen that he also aced the classes so he can crush him one day.
