Recap / Family Guy S 22 E 2 Supermarket Pete

Go To

While the Pawtucket Brewery is under construction, Peter starts working at the Stop 'N Shop, much to Lois' chagrin. Meanwhile, Joe and Brian collaborate on a true crime novel inspired by Joe's police stories since no one is interested in them.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Peter rushes to his latest wacky vehicle (the Mickeycopter), but instead of the usual malfunction, it flies perfectly, due to a desire for synergy with Disney.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: With Peter out of a paycheck for two months, Lois says he has to get a new job to make ends meet. He starts working at Stop 'N Shop, much to her irritation.
  • Company Cross References: Parodied when after Peter is fired from the supermarket, he flies in the Mickeycopter, a Thememobile helicopter modeled after Mickey Mouse.
  • Continuity Snarl: Peter was employed at Stop 'n Shop under the assumption that he had an intellectual disability, which he denies. This contradicts "Petarded", where it was established that he was, in fact, mentally impaired.
  • Curse Cut Short: After Peter points out that Keith Morrison is leaning on wet paint, the latter is about to yell out "Son of a bitch!", only to be cut off by the end credits.
  • Get Out!: Lois tries to get Peter to leave the store after she's had enough of his antics. This doesn't work, and she is immediately thrown out due to the manager assuming she's bullying a mentally challenged employee.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: When the manager admits to Peter that the only reason they hired him was because they thought he was mentally challenged, and they pitied him, Peter insists he's not. He then proceeds to make gestures at the automatic door, thinking he's opening it with the Force, with the manager also noting how he rides the kiddy horse outside the store, and has "Big Petey" on his name tag.
  • Made Out to Be a Jerkass: After Lois gets fed up with Peter working at the store, she snaps at him to leave. Of course, the manager believes she is bullying Peter and bans her from the store.
  • No Sympathy: Peter is at first completely unsympathetic to Lois' misery, blowing off her crying in the living room, having to be told by Chris to go back, and only doing so begrudgingly. To his credit though, he does try and help her after the fact.
  • Out of Job, into the Plot: A somewhat atypical example, in that the brewery is still technically open, but with it going through extensive remodeling, Peter becomes effectively out of a job. The story is kicked off by Lois pushing him to get another job to make ends meet.
  • Persona Non Grata: Lois gets banned from the store after she yells at Peter.
  • Plotline Crossover: Keith Morrison shows up as one of the media figures willing to fight to claim Joe and Brian's case. He later shows up at the very end of Peter's plot to wax over what "Shaggy Dog" Story it turned out to be.
  • Rage Breaking Point: When Lois tries to buy something at the frozen fish section, she sees that Peter is working there now, and proceeds to make bad jokes while ringing the bell. By that point, Lois loses her temper and screams at Peter to leave. Naturally, this outburst gets her kicked out of the store.
  • Ripped from the Headlines: In-Universe, Joe and Brian team up to write a true crime novel based on an unsolved murder case Joe has a file on.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Both plots end up being this.
    • Brian and Joe's investigation ends up going nowhere when they decide to drop it, not wanting to be like all the other people profiting off tragedies.
    • Peter had to get a job at the supermarket, thereby straining his relationship with Lois, due to him invading her happy place in the process, because of extensive remodelling at the brewery where he usually works. At the end, it turns out that the aforementioned remodelling that led to the main plot never went through, meaning that Peter took a job that strained his relationship with his wife for nothing.
  • Shout-Out: The title is a reference to Supermarket Sweep.
  • Take That!: Several jokes are made at the expense of Wework.
  • A Taste of Their Own Medicine: At Bonnie's suggestion, Lois starts working as a waitress at the Drunken Clam to get back at Peter for getting her banned from the store. It backfires, unfortunately, since Peter doesn't recognize her in her uniform.
  • Trashy True Crime: Brian and Joe's subplot has them using a real life murder for the plot of Brian's latest novel. While Joe is doing it to solve the case, Brian is clearly doing it for exploitation. Later, they encounter a group of podcasters and journalists who are also capitalizing off the murder.
