Recap / Fairy May Cry, 30 "Fly! To our Friends and Into Battle!"

Go To

Rejecting their mission to kill Natsu and Wendy, Happy and Carla are on the run from the Extalia soldiers, finding sanctuary with a married Exceed couple who work as farmers.

  • All-Loving Hero: Unlike the rest of the Exceeds, Marl says care for others should extend to anyone, human or otherwise. Despite his attitude, it seems to be a sentiment Lucky agrees with.
  • Blatant Lies: A clearly out of breath Nichiya insists to himself that he is a healthy young man.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Happy uses Dante's signature "Jackpot" after finishing a log cutting competition with Lucky.
  • Broken Pedestal: Lucky and Marl admit that they used to admire/worship the Queen like the rest of Extalia. Said feelings vanished after she ordered a hundred unhatched eggs (including their own) to Earthland for the purpose of killing Dragon Slayers.
  • Cycle of Revenge: Discussed by Marl when Happy offers to 'introduce' the Queen to Dante, noting that taking vengeance usually leads to more problems down the road.
  • Darkest Hour: For the captured members of Fairy Tail, being held in the enemies tailor made prisons, unable to use their magic, and in the immediate aftermath of two of their companions betraying them.
  • Determinator:
    • Invoked by Modeus, who cites Sparda himself taught him to never give up on the face of any enemy. He notes they just need to bide their time for an opportunity.
    • Happy and Carla's own spirits are relit after spending time with Lucky and Marl, fueling their determination to save their friends and regaining their Aera magic in the process.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: After pondering his words to them, Happy and Carla manage to figure out that Nelo Angelo is paving the way for Mundus' arrival in Edolas.
  • Fantastic Racism: Discussed by Carla, who is surprised when Lucky and Marl don't view humans as lesser being like other exceeds.
  • Gilligan Cut: After Natsu Dragion makes a crack about Lucy Ashley being unlikely to have a crush, the scene cuts to two seconds later with her having him in a hold outside the Fireball.
  • He's Back!: At the chapters end, Happy and Carla reaffirm their determination to rescue their friends and stop Nelo Angelo, regaining their Aera magic in the process.
  • Indy Ploy: While running from the Extalia soldiers, Happy hides himself and Carla in a nearby hay cart... which starts to roll downhill.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Dante is clearly pissed at Carla's betrayal, calling her the main reason they're trapped despite giving Happy the benefit of the doubt. When Wendy and Modeus attempt to convince him she could have been manipulated as well, he accurately points out she deliberately withheld relevant information from them (which Happy never had access to) and what she did share led them straight into an ambush. The two are unable to refute any of his arguments, simply opting to focus on trying to escape.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Carla continues to feel horrible from betraying everyone. Thankfully, she gets better by the end.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Carla has a low opinion of her fellow exceeds Fantastic Racism, and wonders if this is how Sparda felt towards demonkind.
  • Open Secret: If Natsu Dragion's comment is anything to go by, pretty much everyone in Edolas Fairy Tail is aware that Lisanna is actually from Earthland.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Happy and Carla's Aera magic comes back with a blue and pink aura respectively.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Instead of being alone, Lucy is trapped in a cell with Lisanna, and both help the other remove their gags.
    • Edolas Eva accompanies both Lucy Ashley and Natsu Dragion in the Fireball.
  • The Power of Friendship: Happy and Carla's Aera magic returns with their determination to save their friends.
  • The Reveal: The end of the chapter reveals the exceed couple that helped Happy and Carla out are actually the formers parents! Lucky even uses his signature "Aye".
  • Running Gag: As Lucky puts Happy to work on the farm, the former keeps making snarky remarks before noting he should keep them to himself, setting off the elderly exceed.
  • So Proud of You: Lucky and Marl are incredibly happy to see the kind of person their son has become.
  • When She Smiles: Carla finally gives a genuine small, which is proudly lampshaded by Marl.
  • You're Not My Mother: Uttered nearly word for word by Lucy Ashley to Edolas Eva when the latter scolds her for roughing up Natsu Dragion. She simply replies that she's the girls aunt.
