Recap / Fairy May Cry, 11 "Satan Soul vs Devil Trigger"

Go To

Vergil's attacks on Fairy Tail continue, with his next targets being the Take-Over siblings, Mirajane and Elfman.

  • Always a Bigger Fish: Mirajane's Satan Soul was no match for Vergil's Devil Trigger.
  • Always Someone Better: Mirajane is an S-class wizard with Take Overs of various demons, but is ultimately outmatched by Vergil.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Both Elfman and Mira display this towards one another.
    • After Vergil trashes Elfman, Mira steps in with a Death Glare, and telling him she won't allow him to harm her brother before battling the Son of Sparda.
    • Elfman starts the chapter worried for his older sister's safety. This grows when she starts fighting Vergil, and after she loses Elfman tries to stand up and demand Vergil to let her go.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Mirajane's response to Vergil bringing up Lisanna's memory, especially her death.
  • Break Them by Talking: Vergil really gets under Mirajane's skin by bringing up Lisanna's demise, and twists the knife further by both listing the reasons she is at fault, as well as the impact it must have had on Natsu.
  • Black Eyes of Crazy: Vergil's first use of his Devil Trigger is preceded by his eyes turning black with blue iris'.
  • Blade Catch: By switching to his Iron Bull Arm, Elfman manages to pull this off against Yamato of all things. Even Vergil is impressed.
  • Blood Knight: Vergil encourages Elfman to use more of his power, and even indulges in fighting hand-to-hand. Not to mention admitting things are getting 'interesting' when Mirajane breaks out her Satan Soul.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center: The usually tough Elfman shows his softer side when alongside Mirajane.
  • The Comically Serious: Vergil earnestly questions Elfman's use of the phrase "a real man" by asking how someone can't be one when they are physically male.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Vergil inflicts one on Elfman and forgoes Yamato in favour of Beowulf at his opponent's suggestion for extra effect.
    • His fight with Mirajane starts out a lot more even, seemingly subverting this... until he breaks out his Devil Trigger, at which point Mirajane can barely keep up.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Vergil is annoyed that the members of Fairy Tail he faces never take up his offer to surrender and just come with him, despite the fact that they cannot beat him.
  • Forced to Watch: Still injured from his own fight, Elfman can do nothing but watch as Vergil physically (and verbally) overwhelms Mirajane.
  • The Force Is Strong with This One: After experiencing Vergil's power firsthand, Freed says that his raw power matches or exceeds that of Laxus, to the shock of Bickslow and Evergreen. Given Laxus inherited his grandfather's vast talent and the Thunder Legions' utter devotion to him, this speaks volumes.
  • Good Cannot Comprehend Evil: Even after his explanation, Mirajane can't understand why Vergil would disregard his emotions and attachments in pursuit of power, especially his indifference to his brother.
  • Good Colors, Evil Colors: Mirajane's dark purple aura against Vergil's dark blue one.
  • Good Wings, Evil Wings: Mirajane's Satan Soul has a bat-like pair of wings while Vergil's Devil Trigger has four demonic wings.
  • I Am Not Left-Handed: Averted by Elfman, who decides to break out his full body Take Over, at Vergil's insistence no less, who wants a better fight.
  • Insult Backfire: Elfman derides Vergil for not being "a real man", which leads to a Badass Boast from the Son of Sparda after the fight.
Vergil: Earlier, you implied that I am not a man. I agree with you. (raises boot) I am far superior to any man.
  • Lightning Bruiser: While he more than qualifies already, once Vergil starts using Beowulf against Elfman his speed and striking power kick up a notch, all the more notable since he forgoes his usual precision slashes in favour of rapid-fire kicks and punches.
    • His Devil Trigger also makes him this compared to Mirajane in her Satan Soul, who herself could qualify for this trope.
  • Muscles Are Meaningless: The much smaller Vergil is able to easily pull off a Punch Catch against the significantly more bulky Elfman before tossing him aside (the latter in his Beast Soul no less).
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The location of the battles in the chapter is a homage to the Fairy Tail episode Advent of Satan.
    • Vergil sheathing Yamato with a "why not" in response to Elfman's complaints about how he fights is a nod to his second boss battle with Dante in Devil May Cry 3.
  • Speed Blitz: Already Vergil's favourite tactic, he takes it up a notch when he starts using Beowulf, knocking around and pummeling Elfman faster than he can react.
  • Super Mode: The chapter has Vergil's first onscreen use of his Devil Trigger, which turns a relatively even fight with Mirajane into a Curb-Stomp Battle in his favour.
  • Takes One to Kill One: After experiencing Vergil's might firsthand, Freed admits Dante (his fellow Son of Sparda) may be the only one capable of beating him in a fight, even adding that he can't see Natsu or Erza doing much more than putting up a good fight.
  • Villain Respect:
    • Vergil sincerely compliments Elfman for managing to pull off a Blade Catch against Yamato.
    • Later, he admits that Mirajane's reputation as an S-Class Mage is well earned, given that she's had the most even fight with him thus far.
