Tropes

  • Armor-Piercing Question: Elena asks Victor why he's defending his family by not cooperating with his interrogation, since his family abandoned him and are probably back home. Victor doesn't let her see his face, but it clearly bothers him.
  • Call-Back:
    • Isabel has completed her engineering class at the Science Academy with honors.
    • The guards discovered the Delgado cabin in Cordoba in "Naomi Knows Best".
  • Convection, Schmonvection: In the climax, Elena hangs just a few feet above the blue lava, yet is so unaffected that she merely breathes a sigh of relief over not falling into it.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The catapult/lever that Isabel made at the beginning comes in handy when Isabel suggests making one to throw a rope to rescue Elena.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Ash reveals in her Villain Song that as a child, her village was robbed by Zopilote, who stole everything that wasn't tied down, including her two pet mice. Her village's loss spurred her into her Start of Darkness, realizing that the bad guys get what they want and led to her pursuing Zopilote as a teacher.
  • Dramatic Irony: Victor, who probably sees the irony in this since he's already told Elena that Esteban betrayed her and their family, yet she doesn't believe him, refuses to betray his family to the enemy. Elena points out that his family betrayed him first, so it doesn't make sense why he's still defending them.
  • For the Evulz: Victor claims that he'll only talk to Elena. When she comes down, the only thing he has to say that he'll never answer any of their questions and then laughs.
  • Full-Name Ultimatum: Elena does this to Isabel when it's discovered that Isabel stowed away on their carriage.
Gabe: Uh oh, three names. That's never good.
  • Hypocrite: Elena grounds Isabel for disobeying a royal order, but Elena did that several times herself in past episodes without facing any serious consequences.
  • I Lied: Carla constantly asks her mother if they're going to save her father, which Ash always answers with a noncommittal assurance. Once Zopilote gives her the map to Takaina, she straight-up tells her that they're not going to go back for Victor and they're going straight to Takaina so that she can become powerful.
  • It's All About Me: It becomes more blatant that Ash is this, who becomes obsessed with going to Takaina so that she can gain power, all while aggressively "training" Carla during her Villain Song and intending to ditch Victor. However, while she does say that she'll be "the one and only", she does say that Carla can join her.
  • Lonely at the Top: Ash sings about how she'll have all the power in the world and doesn't care if she'll be the only one, even though Carla is right there.
The path to the top is oh so lonely,
I'll be the one and only!
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Isabel intervening in the fight against Ash and Carla results in Carla overpowering her and getting her to trip Mateo, who accidentally hits Elena with a spell that throws her against a ledge over lava.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Elena tells Victor that his family probably abandoned him to run home, he claims that they have no home. Elena then asks him about their cabin in Cordoba, which Victor is surprised that she already knows about. This confirms to Elena and Gabe that Ash and Carla also don't know that their cabin has already been discovered as well, so they may have returned home.
  • The Reveal: Zopilote gives Ash a magical map to Takaina, the source of all Maruvian magic. It is a crystal forge where the ancients built their magical jewels, scepters, and amulets.
  • Shout-Out: Ash has a Villain Song in a volcano with unusual colored lava... hmm...
  • Sixth Ranger: Isabel officially joins the team, now that Elena sees the worth of her and her gadgets, although she's grounded for a week for disobeying a royal order.
  • Technicolor Fire: Lava. Xotep is a volcano with blue lava. It almost looks like water.
  • Title, Please!: Starting this episode, the title cards are gone, but they are still read aloud.
  • Villain Song: "The One and Only" by Ash.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: Zopilote can transform into a vulture.
  • You Are Grounded!: At the end, Elena grounds Isabel because she still disobeyed her legal guardian and her crown princess.
  • You Remind Me of X: Carla's feisty attitude prompts Zopilote to comment that she reminds him of Ash back when she was under his tutelage.
