Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 3 E 2 To Save A Sunbird

Go To

After Hool uses up her magical energy to restore the Scepter of Light, Elena goes on a journey to rescue her before she fades away.

  • Call-Back:
    • Elena and co. return to the statue of Aziluna, where Elena was freed from her amulet in Elena and the Secret of Avalor. It's also a plot point that it'd be too dangerous for an ordinary human to swim down to the Aziluna statue, which is why Sofia had to turn into a mermaid to do it.
    • We see the Noblins again for the first time since "First Day of Rule".
    • Higgins recognizes Carla from "King of the Carnaval".
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Ash and Carla recognize the Crystal Caverns and the Suncliff on the map to Takaína.
    • Hool wants to go to Tepet Muul.
  • De-power: Using the vidaflor, Hool's form is able to be temporarily stabilized as her smaller and younger self for a few hours until she can reach Aziluna.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: Carla steals Higgins' uniform using her magic. It doesn't last long since Higgins wakes up from her knockout spell soon enough and there are no female guards.
  • Foreshadowing: This episode shows that there are no female guards, which is what gave Carla away. This becomes a very important plot point in "Changing of The Guard".
  • Heel Realization: Carla finally realizes that her mother doesn't intend on rescuing her father anytime soon and runs off to rescue him herself. It doesn't work, but points for trying.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • Hool uses up her life force to restore the power of the Scepter of Light and she's slowly dying by the time Elena meets back up with the sunbirds. Fortunately, Elena is able to save her.
    • Elena intended to do this for Hool to bring the Breath of Life to her, feeling that it would be wrong of her to not risk everything for Hool like Hool did for her. Elena manages to avoid drowning.
  • Invisible to Normals: While Elena calls Zuzo for help, the Sunbirds joke that she's talking to her invisible friend. Later, Hool can be seen glancing around at the Suncliff Temple.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Hool expresses wonder at seeing a "butterfrog without butter in it".
  • Mundane Utility: The Noblins use a gold-petrified Hool as a slide.
  • Running Gag: When Mateo and Skylar indirectly tell Hool where the places she wants to go are, prompting Migs to side-comment "Good job, ____." to them.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Carla is able to infiltrate Avalor Palace and gets as far as the entrance to the dungeons, but Higgins wakes up sooner than she expected and the entire castle is alerted, resulting in her getting caught and thrown in jail with her father. She really should've listened to her mother (to be fair, rescuing Victor likely would've worked if Ash accompanied Carla).
  • Skewed Priorities: Young Hool is elated at finally visiting Avalor for the first time and wants to see Tepet Muul, eat a churro, and hug a Noblin before going to Aziluna, ignoring that her life is going to end in a matter of hours if she doesn't stay on task.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Hool gets to properly visit Tepet Muul and hug a Noblin before the ending and gets a special delivery of churros from Elena.
  • You've Gotta Be Kidding Me!: Ash's reaction when she finds the note saying Carla ran off to rescue Victor, and judging by how she hadn't come back, Ash now knows Carla got herself captured.
