Recap / Elena Of Avalor S 1 E 01 First Day Of Rule

Go To

Now that she's freed from the Amulet of Avalor, Elena is about to rule Avalor, only to learn she won't be ruling as queen, but as crown princess with help from four grand council members of her choice. Elena disbelieves and tries to prove she's indeed ready to rule.

This episode contains examples of:

  • An Aesop: Don't prove you're ready to do something you're not good at just yet.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: This question from Zuzo makes Elena realize that she's not yet ready to rule as queen.
Zuzo: Did you ever stop to think why the Noblins took the ships in the first place?
  • The Cameo: Cinderella and Belle can be seen from the back in the crowd at the ball, though whether or not that's actually them or this is just an Easter Egg is unknown.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Elena gives Isabel a journal at the beginning of the episode. This comes in handy, as Isabel throws pages from the journal in the river, so Elena, Naomi, and Mateo know where to find her and Gabe when they reach a fork in the river.
  • Cold Open: The episode begins with a prologue of Elena telling of the events of Elena and the Secret of Avalor.
  • Fly-at-the-Camera Ending: After a final shot of Elena and her royal council, Luna closes the episode by flying at the camera.
  • Oblivious to Love: Gabe dorkily introducing himself to Elena, and she doesn't seem to think much of it. Esteban seems to be aware of this.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Gabe and Naomi.
  • Time Skip: The episode takes place a short while after the events of Elena and the Secret of Avalor, at least long enough for Elena, Isabel, and their grandparents to get adjusted to the present day, as well as the royal guard being replaced.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Esteban. Given that Elena has no idea what she's doing, this can be justified, though he's rather stuck-up about it.
  • Truth in Television: Although it's never stated in the show, the episode takes place on what will be known as Elena's Accession Day, where she takes office for the first time. It's also Truth In Television that even though she's not formally queen yet, she's still the formal ruler of Avalor because her predecessor, her father (and her mother), are dead.
