Recap / Ed Edd N Eddy S 5 E 22 A Fistful Of Ed

Go To

A Fistful of Ed is the 22nd and last episode of Season 5 of the Ed, Edd n Eddy cartoon series, first aired in 2007.

Edd accidentally hurts Lee Kanker, making everyone believe he resorts to violence. He then makes mistakes during school hours which causes some of the kids to be hurt or injured. Edd must now try to prove to the other kids that he is not tough and mean.

Tropes (YMMV goes here):

  • A Dog Named "Dog": Edd's replacement goldfish is an egg named Egg (nicknamed Double G).
  • Agony of the Feet: Edd accidentally drops a heavy book on Lee Kanker's foot at the beginning of the episode.
  • Apologetic Attacker: In-universe, this is assumed to be Double D.
  • Battle Discretion Shot: Double D's "fight" with Ed cuts out most of the action and stays mainly on the kids as they react to the "carnage".
  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Discussed when Nazz sees what appears to be Edd brutally assaulting Rolf - she notes that "it's always the quiet ones".
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Jimmy when the pretend brawl between him and Double D turns real, ending in what can only be considered the greatest example of Big Ball of Violence in cartoon history.
  • Big Brother Instinct:
    • Ed towards Sarah when Double D tries to approach her.
    • Inverted with Marie and May who immediately move to get between Lee and Double D after he drops a book on her foot and take her to the school nurse.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Though, compared to most episodes, it can be considered a relatively happy ending (it could have been a Downer Ending, but Eddy was having none of that this time). While Edd is unable to clear his name or redeem his repuation and was on the receiving end of a Curb-Stomp Battle from Jimmy, he is ultimately no longer seen as a bully amongst the kids. In addition, we get a genuine Friendship Moment between the Eds, what with Ed and Edd reconciling and Eddy genuinely defending Edd from the Kankers, leaving Edd touched.
  • Blinded by Rage: After Eddy's heckling pushes Jimmy over the edge, Jimmy snaps and becomes a snarling beast that totally thrashes Edd, and by the time he calms down, he isn't even aware of what he did during that moment and is remorseful when he realized how seriously he beat Edd up.
  • Break the Cutie: Edd (big time!), Ed and Jimmy.
  • Broken Tears:
    • Ed and Double D both break down crying after the former declares that they can't be friends anymore because of the latter becoming a "fisty-cuffs".
    • Happens again to Double D when Jimmy reacts in absolute terror while they're alone in the biology room.
  • Butt-Monkey: Edd. The amount of slapstick pain he receives in this episode is equivalent to what Eddy receives in most of the others. Also, a lot of other characters are involved in painful accidents, namely Ed, Rolf and Jonny. Eddy, on the other hand, gets off without a scratch for once.
  • Clothing Damage: Everyone except May Kanker and Eddy get their clothes torn throughout the episode's run.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Jimmy has his snake tattoo from the episode 'Urban Ed'.
    • Eddy also recalls the episode "One Size Fits Ed" when he mentions the time the Eds turned Jimmy into a sumo wrestler.
    • There is also the return of the baby blue gym sock flower from “An Ed Too Many”, with it even being used as a plot point to help prove Edd’s innocence to Jimmy.
  • Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Jimmy and Eddy.
  • Death Glare: Edd, eyes streaming with angry tears, glares at Eddy when the latter thought the former had intentionally beaten up Ed.
  • The Dreaded: Edd becomes this in this episode, much to his chagrin.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Deliberately enforced by Eddy, of all people, who, pretty much completely fed up after his latest scam falls apart, sets aside his usual fear of the Kankers to shout them down and force them to leave, just so the episode (and by extension the series) doesn't end on a sour note. As a result, the episode ends not with the Eds dragged away by the Kankers, but quite happily munching on hotdogs.
  • End-of-Series Awareness: Sort of. The episode ends with the Eds eating hot dogs and Eddy frustratingly asking if everyone's satisfied, acknowledging some kind of closure before we leave them for good.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: After Double D accidentally injures Lee's foot, Marie and May immediately try to keep him away from their sister. They then help Lee get to the nurse's office. Marie in particular won't listen to Double D's explanation, despite being the Kanker sister most into him.
  • Filching Food for Fun: The Kanker Sisters barge into Double D's club with the intention of stealing the kids' eggs for breakfast.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • In the first scene, Double D's note towards Johnny and Plank states that he "needs constant reminders that making of own doughnuts does.."
    • One of the school posters says "No Roughhousing: We don't want a lawsuit".
    • After Eddy tells the Kankers to "beat it", Edd looks at the Kankers as they leave, but after he sees Eddy's gaze he pokes his tongue out at them a little. This could be a goof, however.
    • When reacting to the book hitting her foot, Lee screams so loudly that her obscured eyes are actually seen for once.
  • Freudian Couch: Jimmy makes one out of a hedge bush for Double D to lay on so he can spill the dirt about his accidents.
  • Friendship Moment:
    • Ed and Edd are delighted that everything being back to normal means they can be friends again.
    • Eddy defends Edd against the Kankers, as well as gives him and Ed hot dogs.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: Edd and Jimmy start the fight with this.
  • Greaser Delinquents: Eddy dresses as one in order to assert dominance at Peach Creek thanks to his friend's new image.
  • Hammerspace: Eddy with the hotdogs. It's even lampshaded.
Johnny: I don't know where he's keeping all those hotdogs, Plank!
  • Heart Beats out of Chest: When Ed thinks his friend Double D has become a bully, his heart is shown beating in his throat and splitting in two before he swallows it back down.
  • Help Mistaken for Attack: The entire premise of the episode. Special mention goes to Edd trying to disarm Ed by pulling away the chair he's brandishing as a weapon, only to pull too hard and send Ed crashing down on top of him.
  • Hope Sprouts Eternal: Jimmy sees the flower that Double D was cultivating bloom into a fusion of a rose and a Baby Blue Gym Sock. Realizing that only a gentle-hearted soul could create such a plant, he realizes that Double D was telling the truth and vows to help him.
  • I "Uh" You, Too: Edd is deeply appreciative of Eddy sticking up for him against the Kankers. Eddy shoves a hotdog in his mouth just so he doesn't have to listen to the mushy stuff.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Eddy is a massive Jerkass throughout the episode, but he gets an epic Pet the Dog moment.
  • Karma Houdini: Downplayed. Besides losing his new jacket and being walked all over by the kids, Eddy doesn't get punishment for acting like a massive jerk here then normal (ironic considering that he almost always does), but at least he redeemed himself by standing up for Edd.
  • Kick the Dog: Played for Laughs. Eddy tells Double D that he's going to get Nazz to massage his feet.
  • Mugging the Monster: Eddy towards Jimmy. The former constantly pelts the latter with hot-dogs, unaware of how powerful Jimmy can be when he gets angry. Surprisingly, he doesn’t end up suffering his wrath.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Jimmy is aghast about what he had done to Edd at the end of the episode and the other kids sweep him up and away before he can do anything.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Edd gets one from Jimmy.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Even Sarah becomes terrified of Double D after witnessing the accidents and thinking he's a violent bully.
  • Once More, with Clarity: Edd's initial "beatings" of the others aren't fully shown, with most of them being obscured by the other characters' reactions. When Edd finally gets to explain himself to Jimmy, it becomes clear what really happened for each incident.
  • Pass the Popcorn: Eddy is eating hot dogs while watching the fight between Edd and Jimmy.
  • Pet the Dog: Eddy when he stands up for Edd against the Kankers, plus when he shows concern for Ed when Double D seemingly beats him up. Also, he shares the hot dogs with his friends at the end.
  • Produce Pelting: Eddy starts throwing hot dogs at Jimmy, which is what causes the latter to snap.
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: "HE'S! HAD! ENOUGH ALREADY!"
  • Rage Breaking Point: Eddy was pretty tweaked about Edd losing the fight and how that impacted his own standing. When the Kankers start bothering Edd, though, Eddy shakes with anger before finally yelling at them to stop bothering him.
  • Replacement Goldfish: Double G.
  • Roar Before Beating: Jimmy does one before giving Edd a vicious beatdown.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When the Kankers show up looking to steal some eggs, everyone but Double D scrambles for whatever hiding place they can find. Sarah and Jimmy hide in a cupboard, Jonny hides in a book, and Ed was pressed up against a corner with nowhere else to go.
  • Series Fauxnale: Danny Antonucci introduced this episode as the final episode of the show when it first aired. However, a few more episodes were still produced afterwards, and the show ultimately ended with a movie.
  • Stupid Evil: Eddy continues to needlessly taunt and heckle Jimmy during the latter's fight against Double D which results in Double D getting brutally beaten up and losing which in turn also causes Eddy to lost the respect and fear from the kids as a result.
  • A Taste of Defeat: The one time in the series the Eds successfully fended off the Kankers by the end of the episode.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone:
    • This episode does this to Eddy and Jimmy, probably the biggest Butt Monkeys of the show. Eddy, of all people, is one of the few characters who never gets hurt and has an awesome moment against the Kankers that allows him (and his friends) to get a relatively happy ending. Jimmy has a badass moment when he beats up Edd and becomes a hero to the other kids at the end.
    • May, the Butt-Monkey amongst the Kanker sisters, is the only one who comes out of episode largely unhurt by Double D's many accidents compared to how Lee and Marie end up.
  • Villain Respect: Sporting a sizable bandage on her foot, Lee actually sounds impressed that Double D did so much damage.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Eddy gives a mild variation to Double D when he mistakenly thinks Double D beat Ed up. He didn't, but at least Eddy's intentions were in the right place.
  • Wimp Fight: This happens between Edd and Jimmy after the fisticuffs.
  • The Worf Effect: Ed and Rolf, the two strongest kids in the cast, are beaten up by Double D's accidents and become helpless cowards for the second half of the episode. Not to mention, the episode starts with the first "beating" from Double D leaving Lee and Marie Kanker seriously injured. This is also one of the only times one of the Eds (Eddy in particular, who's normally the most scared of them) is able to successfully drive the Kankers off.
  • Would Hit a Girl: The accidents that befall Lee and Marie make everything think Double D is capable of this, so even Sarah and Nazz are openly scared of him now.
  • You Have to Believe Me!: Throughout the first act, Double D tries desperately to convince his friends that he isn't a low-life and the accidents with the kids were just accidents.
