Krillin is finally able to use his reservation at L'Anus Serré.

Krillin and 18 go to a fancy restaurant for their actual first date. Hilarity Ensues, but for once the jokes aren't solely at Krillin's expense as the pair discovers ways to enjoy each other that don't involve a trip to the bedroom.

Honestly, we were not expecting this sense of tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Both Krillin and 18 react this way to jokes made by the other at their expense.
  • Attractiveness Discrimination: Their waiter completely ignores Krillin to flirt with 18.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Everything about their interaction—from the playful tit-for-tat, to the mutual defense against the jerkass waiter—makes clear that 18 and Krillin have developed an unassailable chemistry that far transcends the bedroom.
  • Battle Couple: Krillin and 18 each violently threaten their waiter when he's disrespectful to the other.
  • Bilingual Bonus: the name of the restaurant is "L'Anus Serré", French for "Tight ass".
  • Brick Joke: 18 mentions that when Gero kidnapped her, she had 1600 zeni, a joint and a Spencer's gift card in her wallet. She gives the (expired) gift card to the waiter as they storm out, and she's seen smoking the joint outside the restaurant.
  • Call-Back:
  • Charles Atlas Superpower: Krillin effortlessly breaking the table in his Tranquil Fury is a reminder that, even though he can't hold a candle to his peers (or even 18, for that matter), he's still one of the strongest humans by a wide margin.
  • Continuity Nod: Krillin and 18 ultimately end up eating at Jaco's Burgers.
  • Cursed with Awesome: When telling Krillin not to feel bad about how shitty her pre-Android life was (since it was ultimately what allowed her to meet him), she ends it with bragging about how she could now "bench-press a literal building".
  • Eating Optional: 18 may not need to eat, but she likes to anyway.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Jackie Chun (really Master Roshi in a wig) can be seen sitting at one of the other tables.
  • French Cuisine Is Haughty: Krillin actually had to budget for each part of the meal. They eventually ditch it to go eat at a burger place.
  • Funny Background Event: Master Roshi (disguised as Jackie Chun) has to adjust his wig when it starts sliding backwards off his head.
  • Hate Sink: Samuel, the waiter who sleazily keeps trying to make a pass at 18, deliberately ignores Krillin, and ultimately takes no responsibility for his actions until Krillin makes him apologize to 18.
  • Jerkass: The waiter at the restaurant hits on 18 right in front of Krillin. 18 rips him a new one. Krillin then wants him to apologize for calling 18 a "monster bitch", but the waiter blows him off until Krillin effortlessly breaks a table.
  • Oh, Crap!: The waiter's reaction to Krillin smashing a table with his fist.
  • Paying for the Action Scene: Krillin leaves some money for the table he breaks, and 18 gives the waiter an expired gift card as a "tip".
  • Pungeon Master: 18 makes a couple of puns during their date, much to Krillin's surprise. And he gives as well as he gets, too.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: When 18 finally has had enough of the waiter's blatant hitting on her and ignoring his job. It does get him off her back, but his saltiness at being rejected ends up angering Krillin's in the process.
Samuel: I get off at 10 - and then I can get you off at 10:30.
    Krillin: What is he-
18: Alright... Sammy. Three things. First? You wouldn't make it past 10:05. Second, you wouldn't live past 10:06. Third? We're still waiting on our water. So, if you value your job and/or life, you're gonna take this knife, (presses the blade to his throat) cut the bullshit, and get us our god damned Pellegrino.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Krillin and 18 are totally that couple on their date; they laugh at each other's cheesy jokes, casually mention how much they mean to one another, and are totally gonna have sex when they eventually get home. And it's adorable.
  • Starting a New Life: Subtly, but 18 mentions that she only had 1600 zeni, a joint, and a gift card to Spencer's in her wallet when Dr. Gero kidnapped her. She leaves the gift card with Samuel after the confrontation, smokes the joint while outside L'Anus Serre, and spends the zeni on burgers for her and Krillin. In a way, she shed the last vestiges of her previous life on her first date with Krillin.
  • Too Much Information: 18 casually drops that she was basically broke when Gero kidnapped her, suddenly worrying if she was over sharing. Krillin actually appreciates knowing more about her before becoming a cyborg.
  • Tranquil Fury: Krillin is angry enough to break a table in half, but keeps his tone terrifyingly measured and civil.
  • Underestimating Badassery: When Krillin demands the waiter apologize for insulting 18, the man blows him off...until Krillin effortlessly smashes a table. Krillin may be a Butt-Monkey, but he's still the strongest human.
    • This trope also applies in a romantic sense: the sleazebag thought 18 was an easy hookup that would quickly ditch the "midget" he thought she was too good for, being too self-absorbed to realize that 18 and Krillin genuinely adore each other and wouldn't have it any other way.
    • Sexually too: The waiter brags about his ability to pleasure 18 within 30 minutes. Now recall The Stinger for Episode 60, specifically how long Krillin and 18 lasted, and who was the more exhausted between the two.
  • Unusual Euphemism: 18 offers to make Krillin her Sarah Connor.
Krillin: That is, uhh, oddly arousing.
