WHAT THE HELL ARE THESE TROPES FOR?!
- Be Careful What You Wish For: Piccolo mentions he is interested in seeing how humans are born, since he heard there are no eggs involved. Once he gets a glimpse of it he immediately panics and flies away as fast as he can.Gohan: YOU COWARD!
- Call-Back:
- Piccolo seeing Chi-Chi in labor thinks she's preparing an attack, and tries to block it for Gohan.
- Bulma brings up the fact that Vegeta was absent for Trunks' birth and calls him "a bad father and a terrible partner".
- Goten is born with a shot of energy through the wall of Chi-Chi's house. He lands several hundred feet outside, and chuckles.
- And yes, Gohan did dodge it.
- The bolt of energy Goten shoots when he's born could be a callback to all the Destructo-Nookie moments in the series. But if Bulma's Oh, Crap! reaction is any indication, it doesn't seem to have happened with Trunks's birth.
- Goten gets his name from Chi-Chi demanding Goku "go for ten".
- Christmas Episode: It aired on Christmas day, and Chi-Chi calls Goten her "sweet little Christmas angel".
- Dirty Coward: Piccolo flees when he can't handle the sight of Chi-Chi giving birth to Goten. Gohan even calls him a coward as he flies off.
- Fate Worse than Death: Piccolo would rather die for Gohan again than witness Chi-Chi give birth.
- Letterbox: This episode is produced in an even wider aspect ratio than the other episodes, which are 16x9. This results in the scenes being letterboxed.
- P.O.V. Cam: Most of the episode is seen from Chi-Chi's perspective, with her spread knees ever-present in the shot from the end of the titles to the bolt of energy that accompanies Goten's birth.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
- Piccolo would die for Gohan, but seeing Goten's head popping out of Chi-Chi is too much for him.
- Inverted when Yamcha pops in. Chi-Chi says "Get Out!", and Yamcha quickly leaves. It turns out, it wasn’t even Chi-Chi's intention to make Yamcha leave.Gohan: Could you please not send away the help?
Chi-Chi: I. DIDN'T.
Gohan: Oh.
- Significant Birthdate: Goten is born on Christmas Day (which is also when this episode was released), and Chi-Chi even calls him her "sweet little Christmas angel". Christmas also happens to be Goku's favorite holiday.
- Someone to Remember Him By: Gohan recognizes that Goten looks just like Goku. And Goku is actually watching from Heaven using Fortuneteller Baba's crystal ball.Gohan: Wow, he... he looks like a little Dad!
Goku: Huh. He does look like a little me.
"My sweet little Christmas angel, Goten."
