Recap / Digimon Adventure E33 ''Out on the Town"

Japanese Title: Pump and Gotsu are Shibuya-type Digimon

Two Digimon, Pumpmonnote  and Gotsumon, decide to have some fun and check out the ward of Shibuya.

While Patamon and Tsunomon have a discussion about Takeru and Yamato being brothers with divorced parents, Takeru notices that it's late and tells Yamato to go home and let Takeru go home by himself, but Yamato insists on going with Takeru. Patamon asks if the two don't like separating, which causes Takeru to yell at Patamon for talking about them like that. Patamon angrily gets off at the next train stop, causing the other three to run after him (with Takeru doing so grudgingly).

Yamato reproaches Takeru for having yelled at Patamon, and Takeru admits that Patamon had told the truth. Pumpmon and Gotsumon are kicked out of a nearby pachinko place for looking like kids in costumes, after which they unsuccessfully try to hit on a Shibuya girl and run into Yamato and Takeru, causing Tsunomon to recognize them as Vamdemon's servants and immediately evolve to Gabumon. However, Pumpmon and Gotsumon end up not being hostile; while they were ordered to find the eighth child, they find hanging out in Shibuya to be much more fun.

Even so, Pumpmon and Gotsumon continue to cause chaos around Shibuya and drag Yamato, Takeru, and Gabumon along with them. Their fun is put to a halt by the appearance of Vamdemon, forcing Pumpmon and Gotsumon to turn around and chase Yamato and Takeru so that they can steal their Crests. Gabumon laments that he can't bring himself to fight them.

Patamon wonders where Takeru is, feeling somewhat bad about the earlier argument, and overhears two girls talking about how a good meeting place is at the statue of Hachiko. As a result, Patamon looks for the statue in the hopes of finding Takeru.

Pumpmon and Gotsumon corner Yamato, Takeru, and Gabumon, but quickly decide that they'd rather have fun in Shibuya than fight the Chosen. Hearing Vamdemon coming, they tell the Chosen to hide and report to Vamdemon that they failed to catch them, but Vamdemon sees right through it and kills them.note  This has the effect of royally pissing off Yamato, who has Gabumon super-evolve to WereGarurumon and attack Vamdemon right there over his anger at Vamdemon having killed two Digimon that he came to see as friends.

Patamon arrives at the statue of Hachiko, but is unable to find Takeru. However, he's quickly alerted to the screams of the locals and the signs of a scuffle...

While WereGarurumon struggles against Vamdemon, Takeru begins to feel regret: if he hadn't gotten mad at Patamon, they wouldn't have gotten off at Shibuya, Pumpmon and Gotsumon wouldn't have met Yamato and Takeru, and Vamdemon wouldn't have killed them. This triggers Patamon's evolution to Angemon for the first time since his untimely death, and the combined forces of Angemon and WereGarurumon drive Vamdemon away.

The exhausted Gabumon and Patamon collapse, and Takeru initially worries that Patamon had died again, but Patamon assures him that he's all right and Takeru apologizes for their earlier argument.

On their way back to the station, Yamato and Takeru pass by a store where Pumpmon and Gotsumon had fooled around, and the four of them spend a moment looking at it silently before going home.

As the narration describes the battles that would soon befall the Chosen once they find the eighth child, we see Tailmon watching over Hikari hanging out at home... and the eighth Digivice in a bird's nest.

Tropes

  • A Day in the Limelight: This episode is this for Yamato, Gabumon, Takeru and Patamon.
  • Bowdlerize: The dub's changing of Pump(kin)mon and Gotsumon's death to them being "sent to the dungeon".
  • The Cavalry: As WereGarurumon begins to lose his battle against Vamdemon, Takeru's desperation allows a returning Patamon to evolve into Angemon, overwhelming Vamdemon and turning the tide of the battle.
  • Cultural Translation: In the English dub, the like where the two girls talk about meeting at the Hachiko statue is changed to them simply talking about meeting up "at the park".
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Pumpmon and Gotsumon try to fight Vamdemon, but are ultimately no match for him.
  • Feud Episode: Patamon and Takeru fight with each other when Patamon fails to understand his partner's sadness at having to separate from Yamato. Patamon goes off on his own in a tiff and the rest search for him. He comes back to defend them from Vamdemon and patches things up with Takeru afterwards.
  • Fur Against Fang: The episode's main battle starts out with the Wolf Man WereGarurumon fighting the demonic vampire Vamdemon.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: We never actually get to see the act of Vamdemon killing Pumpmon and Gotsumon, but we do see Pumpmon’s axe and a small pebble that’s clearly part of Gotsumon dissolving into air. Yamato also creates one in-universe for Takeru, telling him not to look when the crucial moment hits.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Pumpmon and Gotsumon try to protect Yamato and Takeru from Vamdemon, giving their lives in a fight against him.
  • Minion with an F in Evil: Pumpmon and Gotsumon are such fun-loving mischief makers that they don't seem like they're Vamdemon minionsnote , to the point that Yamato considers them friends rather than enemy digimon.
  • Mood Whiplash: The episode at first seemed like a lighthearted Breather Episode with Yamato and Takeru getting caught up in Pumpmon and Gotsumon's antics...until Vamdemon showed up, displaying how much a No-Nonsense Nemesis he is by brutally destroying the two, emphasizing his cruelty and what will happen if he gets to the Eighth child first.
  • Never Say "Die": The English dub dances rather carefully around Pumpkinmon and Gotsumon's ultimate fate, describing what Myotismon did as banishing them even though the story still acts like they are very much dead and gone.
  • Rule of Symbolism: As Yamato and Takeru sadly walk home after remembering Pumpmon and Gotsumon, two stars are seen shooting through the sky.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Patamon's growth is shown by the fact he was able to evolve into Angemon again, but this time was able to survive a battle with an Ultimate Digimon.
  • Transformation Name Announcement: The dub audio of Angemon announcing himself has been re-recorded so that he sounds confident, as opposed to that from his first dub appearance where he sounds decidedly less so.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: The narration mentions that the instant the Eighth child is located, the flame of battle would erupt into a full-scale war.
  • Your Costume Needs Work: When Pumpmon and Gotsumon are kicked out of the pachinko place, the bouncer tells them that, if they're going to try sneaking in dressed as cartoon characters, they should at least try to get good costumes.
