Red Dragon III (Chapter 29note )

Falin awakes in the middle of the night, acting strange following her resurrection thanks to Marcille. The party goes to find her and runs into an angry elf mage who wants them out of the way so he can fulfill his mission. They are soundly defeated and nearly crushed, escaping at the last minute with the help of some ghosts.

Good Medicine (Chapter 30)

The party finds themselves in the orc village and are caught by Leed, the younger sister of the chief. Laios and Marcille are given medicine by the orcs while Chilchuck wants to leave the dungeon, fearing they're in over their heads. He and Leed go and retrieve their stuff, where she convinces him to be honest with the party about his fears.

The Mad Mage transforming Falin
  • Bathos: As Marcille goes slightly mad while dispelling the wyverns, Senshi's recently prepared Dragon Hams roll into the big puddle of blood, with the dish's title card following them as they do.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Just before the Touden Party is turned into pancakes by the trap room, a group of ghosts appear revealing a secret entrance that allows them to escape.
  • Blood Magic: Using the blood from the dragon's carcass, the Mad Mage creates wyverns to attack the Touden Party. Later he uses the blood to transform Falin into a proper monster.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Because she was reborn with dragon blood, Falin is forced to obey the Mad Mage who brought the red dragon to life.
  • Continuity Nod: Laios and the Mad Mage identify each other from the Portal Paintings escapade.
  • Forced Transformation: The Mad Mage uses his magic to grant Falin a new form to continue the king finding mission. Though the audience doesn't see what she turns into.
  • Foreshadowing: While an entranced Falin makes her way to the dragon carcass, several ghosts appear and try to keep her from going.
  • Laughing Mad: Marcille does this while neutralizing the wyverns that the Mad Mage summons.
  • Living Macguffin: The Mad Mage is hoping to find King Delgal and created the red dragon to help him find his former master.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Marcille's resurrection spell brings back Falin. Unfortunately, the use of dragon flesh in the resurrection means that she's now under the Lunatic Magician's control.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: The Mad Mage proves to be a powerful foe who doesn't waste time with his enemies. His first instinct was to summon wyverns to attack the Touden Party, but after realizing that one of them could counter his spells, he resorts to having them swallowed in the ground and sent to a trap room to be killed.
  • Oh, Crap!: Laios gets this reaction as he figures out the true identity of the elf.
  • The Reveal: The creepy elf from the Portal Paintings episode was the Mad Mage all along.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: The party finds themselves in a closed area below the dungeon's town with a pair of wall about to crush them. Luckily, a group of non-hostile ghosts helps them escape.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Despite the Mad Mage's power, Marcille is at least able to keep up after understanding more ancient magic. Unfortunately, she lacks the mana fortitude to stay at odds.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Chilchuck says this multiple times throughout the segment. First when the Mad Mage casts his first spell, then when they're trapped in a room that almost crushes them.
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: Falin is brought back to life but, being infused with dragon blood from Marcille's spell, she is now under the control of the Mad Mage.

Good Medicine contains the following tropes:

Orcs' compounded medicine
  • Axe-Crazy: Played With. During their first introductions, Leed expresses in killing a long-ear (Marcille) and orders the small one (Chilchuck) to be fed to her group's dogs for entertainment. But after Senshi brings up his promise to her older brother along with realizing why they came down here, she relents and treats them with hospitality.
  • Bathos: Chilchuck successfully expresses his feelings towards his friends and how he doesn't want to lose them to the Mad Mage. Laios and Senshi understand his feelings and hug him as an act of friendship. All of this happens while Marcille lays on the floor still in shock from Leed's medicinal concoction.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Defied. Chilchuck genuinely wants to quit the adventure and doesn't mind leaving behind Laios and Marcille if they still want to continue on their suicide mission. But after talking his feelings out to Leed, he instead voices a new desire of having them return to the surface so they can restock and continue their rescue mission fully prepared.
  • Call-Back:
  • Double-Meaning Title: "Good Medicine" refers to the medicine the orcs prepare to help Laios and Marcille, but it also refers to the idiom "good medicine can taste bitter and honest advice can sound unpleasant," referring to Chilchuck's difficulties in being honest about why he doesn't want the others to pursue Falin.
  • Know When to Fold Them: Chilchuck realizes how in over their heads the party is now that the Mad Mage is aware of them and worries that Laios and Marcille will immediately search for Falin again despite their condition. Leed initially takes him as a coward, but when she realizes the depths of his concern, she instead encourages him to be straight about not wanting anyone to die.
  • Maker of Monsters: Leed explains that the Mad Mage created the red dragon along with various other monsters to protect his dungeon system.
  • Mouth To Mouth Force Feeding: Leed drinks a green medicinal concoction for Laios and Marcille and feeds it to them like a bird. This counts for Marcille as she is too grossed out, but is immobile to resist after running out of mana.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Leed tells Chilchuck that because the Mad Mage is the ruler of the dungeon and many of its monsters, Laios' party killing the red dragon has pissed him off. Her brother told the tribe to avoid the dragon at all cost to avoid incurring the Mad Mage's wrath.
  • No Body Left Behind: The dragon's corpse is gone, apparently dragged along to who-knows-where, by the time Chilchuck and Leed pass by.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Chilchuck screams like a lady in a horror film after seeing orcs at the front door.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Chilchuck doesn't hold back his frustration about how reckless Laios and Marcille can be.
  • Warrior Therapist: Leed and Chilchuck don't see eye-to-eye initially. She praises Laios' risky method to kill the red dragon as courageous, while Chilchuck sees the party's insistence on rescuing Falin as idiocy. At first she thinks of Chilchuck as a coward, but as he tells the story of their journey, she realizes that he just doesn't want his friends to die and advises him to tell them that himself.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Leed calls out Chilchuck cowardice for wanting to lie to his friends to return to the surface, instead of the being honest about his fears.
