Dick: First it was Clarissa Rochester on my table, then Patricia, then Archie... and now poor Leopold. If that family isn't careful, there won't be any Rochesters left!

While discussing Malcolm Rochester's removal from the office and the end of the anti-free press bill proposed by his eponymous family, Maddie and the player are informed that a murder has occurred in the Rochester Memorial. There, the find the body of Leopold Rochester stabbed in the chest.

Tropes:

  • Accuser of the Brethren: Despite Bernadine showing nothing but love for Chief Wright and disdain at her family's immoral affairs, Lawson still has his doubts regarding how truly loyal she is to the Squad, to the point he refuses to believe Horatio wanted to commit her in Gryphon Sanctuary despite evidence proving so.
Lawson: And what? Am I to believe the word of one Rochester to exonerate another?
As far as I'm concerned, all Rochesters belong in jail.
  • Attack on the Heart: Leopold was murdered by being stabbed in the chest with a dagger.
  • Bookcase Passage: Diego discovers a secret passage in the Rochester's summer house after he moves a statue that triggers a mechanism.
  • Bribe Backfire: The Flying Squad finally gets confirmation that Thaddeus Mulroney was bribed by Malcolm Rochester to release Eleanor Halsted in an attempt to assassinate Lawson. However, not only Halsted botched the job and let Lawson alive, but the evidence left behind ends up being Malcolm's undoing as the Squad gets to put him in jail for good.
  • The Bus Came Back: Rockley and Bernadine Rochester reappear as suspects after being absent for some time.
  • Call-Back: Lady Highmore, Horatio, and Malcolm Rochester reappear as suspects.
  • Cain and Abel: To really cement the metaphor of the biblical brothers, Horatio ends up murdering Leopold in this case.
  • Cliffhanger: At the end of the case, Isaac informs the Flying Squad that Mayor Castletown has been assassinated.
  • The Climax: While not the finale of Ivory Hill, this case officially puts an end to the Rochester family saga you've been dealing with since Wolf Street, with the family losing its entire influence over Concordia and its empire crumbling to dust thanks to Horatio and Malcolm's arrests.
  • Continuity Nod: Due to every suspect here being a returning character, many events through the season get referenced in different ways.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Or uncle, in this case. Horatio left Bernadine clear he severely disapproved her relationship with Chief Wright, and threatened Bernadine with committing her to Gryphon Sanctuary if she refused to either break up with him or become a spy inside the Squad for the Rochesters.
  • Designated Bullet: Malcolm carved a bullet with Leopold's name to vent his frustrations after Leopold ruined his career, though he claims he wanted to use it on a deer, not his uncle.
  • Don't Celebrate Just Yet: Just as the crew is about to celebrate taking out the Rochester family, news come out that Mayor Castletown has just been assassinated.
  • Family Extermination: By the end of this case, the only known members of the Rochester family still alive or out of jail are Bernadine, Rockley, Veronica, and to a lesser extent Viola. And even then, the fact that most of their family is either dead or locked up doesn't settle very well with them.
Bernadine: Just look at us now: Uncle Horatio is in jail, his wife and daughter murdered...
...my brother imprisoned too, and his son Archie brutally killed...
...and now Uncle Leopold's been killed, and his son Larry will only hear about it from a jail cell! This is the cost of this family's mad ambition!
  • Family Honor: Horatio's ultimate reason for murdering his brother is that he was trying to preserve his family honor by killing the man who tarnished the reputation of the family by exposing their secrets.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When you inform Lady Highmore of Leopold's death, she seems extremely distraught at the news, something uncharacteristic of her as she didn't even shed a tear for the deaths of her niece or former best friend. This is a hint that she and Leopold were actually engaged.
    • Lawson's distrust of Bernadine and his belief that all Rochesters belong in jail leads to him flagging her and Rockley political enemies and deciding to execute them in Case 58, despite the fact none of them ever do something to deserve it.
    • When you arrest Malcolm, he says you'll regret the day you decided to fight for Lawson and his government, which turns out to be true when he becomes a dictator and the main antagonist of the final district.
  • Good Samaritan: Rockley turns to be this when you convince him of donating a part of his inherited fortune to the Leopold Rochester Foundation to aid young inventors prosper.
  • Inheritance Murder: Maddie and the player find a copy of Leopold's will, showing that his fortune is to be inherited by Rockley. Considering Leopold had cut off Rockley until he could be responsible, it gives the guy a plenty good motive for murder. Thankfully, Rockley isn't the killer.
  • It's All My Fault: Bernadine blames herself for her uncle Leopold's death.
Bernadine: My uncle was an honorable man, but far too innocent and naive. He didn't understand what his family was capable of.
But I did! And I should've warned him before he went and helped you expose my brother's misdeeds!
Perhaps if I'd warned Leopold or had the courage to speak out myself, my uncle might still be alive.
  • Lonely at the Top: Rockley tells you that, even his Leopold made him director of the most influential bank of the city, the fact that his father is dead and his brother is in prison has put him in a sour mood due to feeling alone.
  • Love Hurts: Due to being engaged to Leopold, Lady Highmore is shown to be depressed throughout the case at the prospect of his death.
Leopold's love gave a new lease on life. But alas, he's gone, and now I'm staring into the abyss of loneliness.
  • Love-Interest Traitor: Lawson thinks Bernadine is this for Arthur, calling her a spy for the Rochesters and someone that shouldn't be trusted. Even after you show him proof that she was against her family's plans, he still seems to have his doubts about her loyalty.
  • Make Sure He's Dead: The Additional Investigation focuses on delivering the final blows necessary to eradicate the Rochester family for good, which you accomplish by incarcerating Malcolm after finding out he bribed Commissioner Mulroney to release Halsted from prison.
  • The Man Behind the Man: During his arrest, Horatio reveals he's the one behind the stealing of people's lands back in Coyote Gorge and fueling the Mob War in Crimson Banks, as well as the one who made deals with The Devil and bribed Nurse May to commit healthy patients in Gryphon Sanctuary back in Grim Chapel.
  • Mistaken for Dying: During Chapter 3, Chief Wright calls the Squad to tell you he thinks Bernadine has committed suicide. Fortunately, she just fell asleep after ingesting a bunch of antidepressants.
  • Money Dumb: The player finds out that Leopold cut off Rockley's finances until he could be more responsible. In particular, Rockley once spent a year's wages on one stamp for his stamp collection.
  • New Job as the Plot Demands: Leopold asked Rockley to become the new manager of the Bank of Concordia after the former one's death.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Leopold is murdered by Horatio because he helped you stop the Rochesters from taking over Concordia.
  • Real Event, Fictional Cause: During the Additional Investigation, it's revealed Leopold is behind the first prototype of a computer ever made, and he was also planning to finance the careers of some young scientists named Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. Thankfully, Rockley decides to follow his legacy and create a foundation to make this possible.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Horatio killed Leopold as a punishment for betraying his family.
Horatio: He stabbed us in the back, so I stabbed him through the chest, before the very eyes of our ancestors!
  • Secret Room: One of them located beneath the Rochester's summer house serves as a crime scene, which Diego discovers by pushing a statue.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Paul Cézanne, Albert Einstein, and Thomas Edison are mentioned.
    • The Framptons is a parody of the Hamptons.
    • Inverted Benny is a parody of Inverted Jenny.
    • The number 74205 is found on a clue, this is a reference to the Defiant.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Horatio and Leopold had one as a result of Horatio being jealous of the praise Leopold received from his inventions and foundations, while Horatio had no time to create anything noteworthy as he was focused on keeping the Rochester family afloat.
  • Soul-Crushing Desk Job: Rockley considers working as the director of the Bank of Concordia this, as while it's a very high-profile job with an extremely generous pay, he'd rather stay in his chocolate factory inventing new candies.
  • Spanner in the Works: To prove his innocence after you accuse him of murdering Leopold, Malcolm tells you go to the Rochester Summer House to look for clues. Not only this place ends up providing tons of clues that prove Horatio is the killer, but also ends up incriminating Malcolm too after you find proof he bribed Commissioner Mulroney to release Halsted from prison.
  • Sympathy for the Devil: Despite the atrocities he committed as Mr. Alastor back in Elysium Fields, Bernadine can't help but feel sorry for Archie's death, calling him a poor little boy while recapping the fate of her family's members.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Horatio tries to garner sympathy by pretending to be distraught about Leopold's death despite him being his murdered.
  • Wrongfully Committed: As revealed during the Additional Investigation, Horatio intended to commit Bernadine in Gryphon Sanctuary like he did with his wife is she refused to either break up with Arthur or become a Flying Squad spy for the Rochesters.
