"Daddy hugged Princess Irina and told her to keep his secret. Otherwise the Mommy dragon would eat them up!"

The body of Russian au pair Irina Nemovska is found with her throat slit in a classroom.

Tropes:

  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Irina was killed by what must be the sharpest pair of child's scissors known to man.
  • Abusive Parents: The Mills unwillingly act emotionally abusive towards Sarah even if they do love their daughter Sarah with all their might. It's the reason why they decide to change for the better in the end.
  • Armoured Closet Gay: Jenny is willing to kill just to make sure that her lesbian relationship remains hidden.
  • Awful Wedded Life: At first, the Mills are shown to have a lot of problems regarding their marriage, such as Janice believing her husband is cheating on her and Dennis hiding their financial problems. Fortunately, they manage to reconcile and get better in the end thanks to their daughter.
  • Bad Date: Alex's date with Cathy involved him spilling wine all over her lap at dinner and nearly driving over her cat when he dropped her at home.
  • Break the Cutie: Sarah Mills, who is only eight-years old. First, her nanny is murdered. Then, we've also found out her parents are emotionally abusive. For starter, her mother can get easily mad for her freaking Teddy Bear doll. She gets better in the end, though.
  • Bury Your Gays: The victim was a lesbian who got murdered by her closeted girlfriend after a dispute.
  • Call-Back: Caroline Fitzgerald reappears as a suspect.
  • Cliffhanger: The case ends with Ramirez informing you that the media has found out about the Serial Killer at University, calling it The Rorschach Reaper.
  • Convenient Misfire: Subverted. Grace tells you that the gun you found was broken and that's why the killer stabbed the victim instead, but you later you find out that Jenny only wanted to use the gun to scare Irina, not kill her.
  • Cool Teacher: Jenny, according to Sarah. Though she stops being this after you find out she killed someone.
  • Deadly Euphemism: According to Sarah, Jenny told her Irina had "departed", which she thinks refers that she went back to Russia.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Grace's reaction after she tells you she found teddy bear fibers in the gun that was apparently intended to be used as the murder weapon and Jones asks who would be crazy enough to fire off a gun with a teddy bear.
Grace: If you'd just keep your brilliant comments to yourself for two seconds, Jones...
  • Dysfunctional Family: The Mills. Both parents are struggling with marital problems and act emotionally abusive towards their daughter Sarah, who looks up to her au pair instead of them. They get better in the Additional Investigation.
  • Get Back in the Closet: Jenny and Irina were in a secret relationship, but Irina wanted to make it public, something that Jenny's religious and old-fashioned lifestyle and friends wouldn't have been approved. For this reason she tried to scare Irina with a gun, but things escalated quickly and she ended up stabbing her with a pair of scissors.
Jones: Mrs. Honeycomb... you can't possibly think being a lesbian is more shameful than murdering someone!
Jenny: Well, in my social circle it is... that's the way I was raised. I always knew I was attracted to women but I could never admit it to myself until I met Irina...
  • Hidden Weapons: The killer brought a gun to school to threaten the victim inside a teddy bear.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Jones scolds Nathan for thinking about bacon whilst examining the body despite Jones thinking about food during almost every case.
  • Inappropriate Hunger: Nathan claims that nothing can put him off bacon, not even murder victims killed in grotesque ways.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Sarah calls Jones chubby after the latter thinks Mr. Chubby, her class' pet hamster, is referring to him.
Jones: Chubby! That little girl thinks I'm chubby!... You don't think I'm chubby, do you, <Player's Name>?
  • Killing in Self-Defense: Jenny killed Irina after they struggled for her gun and Jenny ended up stabbing her girlfriend. However, Judge Hall stills gives her a life sentence since she was the one that instigated the event.
  • Literal-Minded: Sarah. Justified since she's still a child.
Sarah: But when we got home, she tore up my favorite photo! It's the one Daddy said Reeree looked hot in. I don't think she looked hot... her cheeks weren't red or anything!
  • Magical Nanny: Averted. Irina arguably brought more problems to The Mills than solving them, even if it wasn't her fault.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Janice thought that Dennis was cheating on her with Irina, hence why she booked a flight for her to go back to Russia.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Had Jenny just told Irina to keep their relationship a secret or breaking up instead of threatening her with a gun to scare her off, none of the case would've happened.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: After you investigate Sarah's room, Jones tells you he always wanted a pink bedroom when he was a kid.
Jones: What? Boys are allowed to like pink too!
  • Red Herring: Throughout the case, you discover that Janice believed her husband had been cheating with the victim, and that Irina knew about Dennis' secret financial problems which would've made his marriage fall apart if she said anything. One of them is guaranteed to be the killer, right? Wrong. In the end, Irina was killed by totally unrelated reasons to The Mills and their marriage, instead getting murdered by her girlfriend during a dispute.
  • Rich Bitch: The Mills family are wealthy, but also extremely dysfunctional and trashy. Fortunately, they get better by the end.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Slashed Throat: Irina was killed with a pair of scissors this way.
  • Tempting Fate: Looks like Jones has regained his powers after them being absent during previous cases.
Jones: Oh well, cheer up! I've a feeling it's going to be a good day in Grimsborough. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, our new cappuccino machine has arrived and...
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: Jenny Honeycomb is both the killer and the one who reported the body.
