A Plot: Ike's barn burns down and Lacey wants to help. She organizes a bachelor auction to raise money, attracting a mystery woman who bids high for Brent; the more time the two spend together, the more curious the town gets about the woman's identity.
B Plot: Emma feels underappreciated at home, and after a few mysterious absences, Oscar's set on proving he's being cheated on.
C Plot: Hank's convinced that Ike is cursed, as the barn-burning is just the latest in Ike's bad luck, and wants to use his own cash to pay a witch for a cure. Wanda convinces him that Lacey Burrows is descended from George Burroughs, and he ends up convincing the rest of the town.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Bid: It turns out that Brent's mystery date is his mother Emma, having placed one intentional bid on him when nobody else had so he wouldn't be humiliated in the auction, and then getting caught up in the excitement and bidding against herself.
  • Bachelor Auction: The start of the A Plot.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment:
Oscar: Emma sent flowers to some juiced-up Valentino. Can't you arrest her or something?
Karen: Are you serious? Dog River has a flower shop?
  • The Cameo: By Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield
  • Credit Card Plot: Lacey agrees to play the part of a witch because she's getting paid for it, and had racked up a huge credit card debt on the down-payment for new lumber for Ike's barn.
  • Distinction Without a Difference: When Wanda asks Lacey to remove the "curse" she put on her, Lacey retorts that Wanda doesn't believe in magic. Wanda confirms she doesn't, but then adds "I believe in the power of suggestion, and I suggest you remove this suggestion".
  • Double Meaning:
Wanda: Why don't you drop the charade and come clean?
Lacey: Can't. I'm still carrying a balance on my credit card. I just need to pull a couple more tricks.
Wanda: You should probably call them "spells".
  • Exact Words: When Hank asks Brent how his mystery dates go, Brent says things like there was definitely an emotional connection, or that they had to stop their dates because "she's married, and to a real nutjob", without ever revealing he was just having dinner with his mom.
  • Fake Relationship: Brent and Emma continue having fake dates, never telling anyone where they're going or who they're seeing, so that Brent can project the image of a ladies' man and Emma can mess with Oscar.
  • Hurricane of Puns: By Wanda during the auction while trying to get ladies to bid on Phil the bartender:
Wanda: Phil your boots with Phil the Thrill. Look at him Phil those pants! Come on, I'm running out of Phil puns.
  • Imagine Spot: Several characters try to think who Brent's "mystery woman" will be, including Karen thinking it's Lacey:
Pretend!Lacey: Oh, Brent. Karen has such a limited imagination.
Karen: Did my own brain just burn me?
  • Incest Subtext: Lampshaded all over the place with Brent and Emma:
Brent: I'm glad Dad pressured me into asking you out on a second date, and I already regret that wording.
Emma: Let's keep our little tryst a secret.
Brent: "Tryst" is even worse wording.
    Emma: How about "rendezvous"?
Brent: How about we change the subject?
  • Lawyer-Friendly Cameo: After Lacey does a bunch of dance steps as a stand-in for a witch hex:
    Hank: Isn't that the Macarena?
    Wanda: Legally, it's different enough.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When regaling Hank and Lacey with the story of George Burroughs, Wanda looks at the camera when saying that it's real and you can Google it.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: After Wanda accidentally reveals that Lacey isn't a real witch, she has to give money back to the town, and then she curses Wanda. Wanda immediately has a string of horrible luck, to the point where she pays off Lacey's entire debt to remove the "suggestion".
  • Mistaken for Badass: Lacey's "witchery" includes removing a splinter from a cat and turning a printer on, which are presented as spells and briefly fascinate the community before they catch on.
  • Shout-Out: After establishing Lacey as a "witch", Wanda calls her "Glinda".
  • Witch Hunt: Inverted; the town ends up forming an angry mob when they realize that Lacey isn't a witch.
