Recap / Cloak & Dagger (2018) S02E10 "Level Up"

Go To

In the action-packed season finale, Tyrone and Tandy head to the Loa dimension to stop the evil force threatening New Orleans. To finally put an end to it, they must come face to face with their own personal issues that have been holding them back. Meanwhile, Mayhem and Evita do their best to hold off the dangers in the real dimension.

  • And the Adventure Continues: The episode (and series) ends with Tandy and Tyrone Leaving New Orleans on a bus to continue their superheroics in other places.
  • Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: Andre manages to transcend his human form through his Mass Hypnosis just before being killed by Tyrone and Tandy, enabling him, as a loa, to live in the Darkforce Dimension. His Fate Worse than Death seems to indicate he would rather have died, though.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Mayhem fights the fake Fuchs in the church, and he tries to talk her down from fighting him. She tearfully apologizes to him, and he gloats that she'll never be able to make up for his death. Mayhem then tells him she wasn't apologizing for the past... and holds up the pins she just pulled out of his grenade belt.
  • BFS: Tandy concludes her speech about needing to level up by doing exactly that, creating a massive light sword to fight her father with.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Mayhem comes to Evita's rescue when Andre's Darkforce slaves try to put out the candle. Evita later returns the favor, shooting a few of them In the Back when Mayhem is on the brink of being overwhelmed.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Evita speaks French in one scene.
  • Bittersweet Ending: With more emphasis on the sweet part. The fates of many individual characters are shown:
    • Tyrone's name is cleared and Connors's uncle is arrested. However, Adina still didn't tell her family about murdering Connors herself.
    • Mina has moved on after becoming a terror.
    • Solomon hasn't left gang life behind. However, he is now drawing clear moral lines on what he would do and what not.
    • Father Delgado has quit drinking and gone back to the priesthood.
    • Lia is in prison for her part in the abduction and sex slavery of multiple women.
    • Mayhem has moved past Fuchs's death.
    • Tandy and Tyrone are leaving New Orleans to take up superheroics on a larger scale, starting with a place where girls have been found dead on the beach.
  • Break Them by Talking: Before fighting, Tyrone and Tandy take down each other's monsters by pointing out how they're worthless and weak. Eventually, Andre has to intervene because they're winning.
  • Brown Note: Andre uses his trumpet to cause physical pain towards Tandy and Tyrone in his realm.
  • Call-Back: Tandy "grades" her father's importance in her life by giving him a Zorro Mark with her newly-created light sword, referencing the discussion she had with Ty earlier in the season when they watched The Mark of Zorro about needing a sword to "Z" people.
    • As they ride into the sunset, Tyrone asks Tandy "Pancakes or waffles?", calling back to her asking him how he likes to hold hands with his girl.
  • Clear My Name: At the end of the episode, Tyrone's name is finally cleared and Connors's uncle is arrested.
  • Combination Attack: How Andre gets defeated: Mikayla, Melissa and Mina hold him down, while Tandy emerges out of Tyrone and impales him with a giant lightsword.
  • Comic-Book Movies Don't Use Codenames: Played with. Tandy questions whether they should even be calling Brigid by her civilian name anymore. Ty asks what they should call her instead. After a brief pause, Tandy decides "Brigid" is fine.
  • Dead Guy on Display: Mayhem puts Connors's body on display on the precinct's shooting range.
  • Exactly What I Aimed At: Andre thinks that Tandy missed him when she throws his daggers - except that she threw them at his victims. Her daggers are made out of pure hope, so they revive them.
  • Face Your Fears: Tyrone is forced to fight a 'perfect' version of himself, Tandy faces her dad, and even Mayhem faces an illusion of Fuchs in the real world.
  • Grand Finale: The final episode of the series.
  • Hold the Line: Evita and Mayhem are left to defend the candle throughout most of the episode, as they have to keep it burning, otherwise Tandy and Ty might not find their way out of Andre's realm anymore.
  • Honor Among Thieves: Part of the ending montage shows the drug dealers honoring the deal Ty forced on them, refusing to sell to a pimp.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Evita, when Tandy and Ty argue about going to her for help, points out that she can hear them through her wooden door easily.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Andre's ultimate fate. He gets trapped in his realm, being forced to listen to his own broken record, presumably forever.
  • Mass Hypnosis: People from all over the city start disappearing from their lives, teleporting into Andre's domain, where he hypnotizes them with his music to feed off of their despair.
  • Mirror Match: Tyrone is forced to fight the version of himself that became a cop.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Tandy and Tyrone finally perform their Signature Move from the comics: Having Tandy hide in Tyrone's cloak and jump out for an ambush.
  • Next Tier Power-Up: A villainous version. Andre managed to succeed in unlocking his veve at the end of the last episode, and now he's able to influence all of New Orleans with his music, drawing people to him so he can go to the next stage.
  • "No More Holding Back" Speech: After getting a pep talk from each other, Tandy and Tyrone give their respective fear illusions a speech on how they can't hurt them anymore, before kicking their asses.
  • Opponent Switch: Tandy and Tyrone briefly switch opponents, with Tyrone fighting Tandy's dad and Tandy fighting Tyrone's Mirror Match.
  • Season Finale: The series' second.
  • Ship Tease: With Evita and Tyrone no longer being an item, the chances of Tandy and Tyrone getting together are greatly improved, with them leaving New Orleans on a bus together and holding hands.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Tandy refuses to listen to any of her dad's excuses for his abusive behaviour.
  • Super-Strength: Mayhem's is on full display during the battle against Andre's goons in the church, and later when she single-handedly drags Connors's body into the police precinct and strings him up in the shooting range.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: After Andre intervened to reverse the Opponent Switch they pulled, Ty and Tandy manage to beat their monsters by pointing out how awesome they actually are and how shitty their opponents are.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Tandy can now make swords out of light.
  • Trash the Set: When Ty and Tandy show up at Papa Legba's crossroads, they find it thoroughly wrecked, same with the mall when they finally get there. Andre's ascension is fucking with the natural order of things.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Tandy and Ty keep reassuring each other throughout the episode.
  • You Should Have Died Instead: Tyrone gets told this by his Darkforce manifestation.
  • Zorro Mark: Tandy does this to the manifestation of her father in the Darkforce dimension, to indicate that if the things that affect her life are graded alphabetically, he rates a 'Z'.
