Recap / Carl S 5 E 9 Bad Roxanne (1/2)

Go To

Original release date: 07/28/2022

Roxanne comes to school with a completely different appearance and attitude to match, being rude to others, disrespecting faculty members, and ignoring her friends, which concerns Carl and all his friends. Meanwhile, Dry Bones misses Talia and comes up with an idea to pay her a visit in her new school.

Tropes:

  • Adults Are Useless: Roxanne's mother sees nothing wrong with her daughter's sudden change in appearance, tries to excuse her recent behaviour by shifting the blame to Staffordshire, and refuses to believe that Gooper had something to do with all of this, referring to him as a "perfectly fine and polite young man". Roxanne's father on the other hand simply just doesn't give a crap about what Roxanne does.
  • The Bro Code: Gender Inverted. Roxanne is visibly upset after she learns from Mary-Lynn's sisters that Kylie had hooked up with Tucker during the Christmas party, even though Roxanne had broken up with Tucker months prior (granted, Gooper had forced her into doing so, but even then the break-up was also a result of Tucker constantly ignoring Roxanne and taking her for granted). When Kylie confronts Roxanne for not standing up for Grace when Gooper and his gang insulted her and made her cry, Roxanne tries to turn the tables on Kylie by bringing up her fling with Tucker, as well as how she supposedly caused Talia and Dry Bones' break-up out of jealousy.
  • Bystander Syndrome: With the exception of her friends and Tucker, none of the students of Toad Town High seem concerned over Roxanne, who is normally a Nice Girl, being rude to Principal Staffordshire, wrecking her car, and getting into a fight with Kylie, with all of them recording her with their phones, uploading the footage to social media and laughing.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Amy-Lynn says Mary-Lynn's "Shut up, Sherri-Lynn!" when Sherri-Lynn laughs about what Kylie says about her.
  • Cat Fight: Kylie and Roxanne end up getting in a fight after Kylie confronts Roxanne about not standing up for Grace, and Roxanne tries to defend herself by calling Kylie out for kissing Tucker and not tellinng her about it and accusing her of breaking up Dry Bones and Talia over jealousy. The fight is broken off by Staffordshire.
  • Changing Yourself for Love: Apparently Roxanne got a makeover to please Gooper. Additionally, Mary-Lynn dyed her hair blonde just like Roxanne's in an attempt to win Gooper back, only for him to say that he loves black hair.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When informed that Mr. Morris' car's seats are covered in frogspawn as a result of Roxanne driving his car into a pond, Linda is more concerned about the tadpoles than the car, which upsets Mr. Morris.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Roxanne starts acting like a female version of Gooper. After Roxanne refuses to stand up for Grace when Gooper and his gang insult her and make her cry, Carl states that if she wants to act like Gooper, he'll treat her like he treats Gooper.
  • Disguised in Drag: Dry Bones and Boo dress up as girls so they'll be able to visit Talia at her school, which only allows girls.
  • Ephebophile: Roxanne accuses Mr. Morris of looking at pictures of his students when he tries to confiscate her phone.
  • Eye Scream: Mr. Morris tries to confiscate Roxanne's phone, so Roxanne throws it at his face, hitting him in the eye.
  • Goth: Roxanne's makeover has her dye her hair black and remove the flower she normally wears on it, wear a black shell and heels and get a nose piercing. Over the course of the episode, she adds pink and blue streaks to her hair and gets several more piercings. It's implied that she changed her appearance to satisfy Gooper.
  • False Friend: Kylie tells Roxanne that she may think that Amy-Lynn and Sherri-Lynn are her friends now, but she warns her that as soon as Gooper gets bored of her and dumps her they'll be over by his side insulting her. Fittingly, they both flee and abandon Roxanne when Staffordshire comes to put a stop to her fight with Kylie.
  • Getting Suspended Is Awesome: Staffordshire suspends Roxanne from school after she wrecks her car with a baseball bat, to which Roxanne reacts with joy, and Gooper and his friends congratulate her on. It takes Felix, Linda and Calvin to convince Staffordshire not to expell Roxanne instead.
  • Gold Digger: The Hatchins sisters accuse Staffordshire of only being with Felix for his money, and try to convince Roxanne that it's also part of the reason why Grace supposedly never gets in trouble at school.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Roxanne accuses Kylie of having caused Dry Bones and Talia's break-up out of jealousy that Dry Bones wouldn't date her. This along with not doing anything as Gooper and his gang made Grace cry causes Kylie to start a fight with Roxanne.
  • Honor Before Reason: Blooper tells Carl that even though he really wanted to be with Roxanne, he rejected her at the end of the Bowling night because she was already dating Gooper and he felt it was wrong, feeling that she should break up with Gooper first. Carl tells him that his decision was stupid because not only is Gooper a horrible person, but him rejecting Roxanne likely caused her to copy Gooper's behaviour.
  • It's All My Fault: After Carl tells Blooper that him rejecting Roxanne was likely what caused her to become a female Gooper, Blooper is left believing that what happened to her was his fault. Carl tells him that while he should have had her back when she needed it the most, it's not completely his fault that Roxanne changed for the worst, but Gooper's for treating her like an object he can mold into his image.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Staffordshire may be a strict disciplinarian and somewhat of a Control Freak, but she's right to call Roxanne out on her behaviour and warn her that she will be forced to attend school during Spring Break if she skips another detention, which she had rightfully earned for disrespecting faculty members. It's honestly a miracle Felix, Linda and Calvin managed to convince Staffordshire to not expell Roxanne for everything she had done.
  • Let Me Get This Straight...:
Carl: ...you kissed Roxanne, and she rejected you and got really close with Gooper
    Blooper: (No... I rejected her...)
    Carl: What?! Why?!
    Blooper: (She has a boyfriend!)
    Carl: Her boyfriend's an asshole!
  • Mama Didn't Raise No Criminal: Roxanne's mother Catherine sees absolutely nothing wrong with Roxanne disrespecting faculty members, and she also tries to excuse Roxanne damaging Staffordshire's car by shifting the blame to Staffordshire for threatening to force Roxanne to come to school during Spring Break, even though Staffordshire only did it because Roxanne had been skipping all the detentions she had earned.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Roxanne has this reaction when she doesn't stand up for Grace when Gooper, Amy-Lynn and Sherri-Lynn are demeaning her and making her cry. She even feels like apologising to her for what has happened, but Gooper didn't seem to care.
    • Blooper feels guilty for Roxanne accepting and copying Gooper's behaviour, as he and Carl are convinced that him rejecting her at the end of the Bowling Night is what ultimately drove her to embrace Gooper.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Mary-Lynn's sisters flee the scene when Staffordshire comes to put an end to Kylie and Roxanne's fight.
  • Shut Up, Kirk!: Near the end of the episode, Kylie confronts Roxanne about not doing anything as Gooper and his gang insulted Grace and made her cry. Roxanne in turn tries to excuse herself by trying to make Kylie look like a hypocrite, bringing up how she made out with Tucker and didn't tell her about it (in spite of Roxanne having broken up with Tucker months ago) and accusing her of causing Dry Bones and Talia's break-up because she was jealous that Dry Bones wanted to date Talia and not her. This causes Kylie to run out of patience and lunge at Roxanne, starting a fight with her.
  • Serious Business: Roxanne refuses to stand up for Grace when Gooper's gang insults her and makes her cry, which Carl and Kylie don't take very well. Carl says that if Roxanne wants to act like Gooper, then he will treat her like he treats Gooper, and Kylie ends up fighting Roxanne at the end of the episode over this.
  • Summer School Sucks: Or rather "Spring Break School Sucks". Principal Staffordshire tells Roxanne that if she skips detention again, she will be forced to come to school during Spring Break with Gordy and Coach Johnson. This causes Roxanne to damage Staffordshire's car.
  • Oh, Crap!: Tucker has this reaction when he learns that everyone is watching Kylie and Roxanne fighting each other at the end of the episode.
  • Parental Obliviousness: Roxanne's parents Catherine and Danny see absolutely nothing wrong with their daughter's behaviour, with Catherine trying to shift the blame onto Staffordshire for trying to force Roxanne to come to school during Spring Break (even though she rightfully did it because Roxanne had been skipping all of the detentions she had earned for misconduct), and Danny outright not caring about what Roxanne has done, which includes wrecking Staffordshire's car and driving Mr. Morris' car into a pond. It's only when Staffordshire threatens to expell Roxanne that Catherine decides to talk to her. In addition, when Felix says that Roxanne's change in attitude and appearance might be related to Gooper, Catherine says that Gooper is a "perfectly fine and polite young man" only because he "saved" Roxanne from the Gutts.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Sherri-Lynn and Amy-Lynn shout out some biphobic comments at Kylie. It's even worse when you remember that Kylie's break-up with Emily ended up with the latter assaulting the former for a mistake she made.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Blooper rejecting her for already having a boyfriend caused Roxanne to fully embrace Gooper, even when he was blackmailing her into dating him in the first place, and she becomes an almost exact female version of him. In addition, Roxanne starts hanging out with Amy-Lynn and Sherri-Lynn, who are just as much of a negative influence as Gooper.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Apparently, Blooper rejecting Roxanne at the end of the previous episode due to her already being with Gooper is what ultimately drove Roxanne into embracing Gooper's influence, almost becoming a female version of him.
  • Watch the Paint Job: After Staffordshire tells her that she will force her to come to school during Spring Break if she skips detention again, Roxanne wrecks her car with a baseball bat. She also drives Mr. Morris' car into a pond while she is at it.
  • What the Hell, Hero? / "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: Carl has this reaction when Blooper tells him that he rejected Roxanne at the end of "The Valentine's Bowl" because she was already dating Gooper, with Carl remarking that Gooper is a terrible person and that Roxanne shouldn't be with him in the first place.
