Recap / Brooklyn Nine Nine S 2 E 20 ACDC

Go To

"AC/DC" is the twentieth episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine's second season.

After Jake seriously injures himself while chasing a suspect, Terry tries to force Jake to take a break and rest. Jake insists, however, that he is fit to work in spite of his multiple cracked and broken bones.

Meanwhile, Holt and Rosa have run out of excuses to avoid having a family dinner with Kevin and Marcus. In order to try and keep their relationship as professional as possible, Holt invites Amy and Gina to the dinner as "intimacy buffers".

This episode provides examples of:

  • Anger Born of Worry: While in the hospital and unable to move, Jake apologizes to Terry, thinking he's angry because Jake was insubordinate and their perp got away. Terry says hell no, he's worried because Jake nearly died!
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Terry asks Jake if he's okay after Jake's hit by a patrol car. Jake replies he isn't.
  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Jake gets injured badly while he's on a case on his birthday.
  • Black Comedy: Jake's reactions to his injuries are played for laughs.
  • Blatant Lies: Jake is clearly in immense pain but insists that he can work. Terry sees right through him.
    • At the Seafam Motel, Jake notices Charles is "fancy-speaking" and asks what he's hiding. Cue a knock at the motel room door, followed by a voice on the other side of the door that's clearly Terry, clearly mad as hell:
      Terry: HOUSEKEEPING!
  • Call-Back: A few
    • Holt and Rosa's agreement of never mixing personal and work life from "Stakeout" is brought up and plays a plot point.
    • Amy's awful cooking from "Thanksgiving" is brought up again by Gina.
    • Charles does his "fancy-speak" when lying from "Jake and Sophia" again.
  • Cringe Comedy: The dinner date.
  • Double Date: Holt and Rosa are forced to participate in a dinner party with their significant others. They intentionally make things as awkward as possible because they don't want to get too close, lest it complicate their professional relationship.
  • Even the Rats Won't Touch It: After throwing Amy's nicoise salad out the subway window, Gina claims she saw the rats run away from it.
  • Freudian Excuse: Jake's workaholic tendencies are given an explanation in this episode: not long after joining the NYPD, he decided to take a vacation in the middle of case and his suspect was involved in a shootout that got two civilians shot. Now he refuses to take time off when he's in the middle of a case because of the guilt.
  • Gallows Humor: Jake often jokes around despite being severely injured multiple times.
  • Hood Hopping: Jake first gets injured attempting it and tripping on an open sunroof.
  • I Can Still Fight!: Jake insists on going after his perp despite suffering serious injuries.
  • Lethal Chef: Amy, despite her utter lack of culinary skill, attempts to make a nicoise salad. No one eats it (because Gina throws it out), but the smell is enough to stink up an entire subway car.
Amy: It’s my mom's famous nicoise salad.
Gina: Amy, all your cooking stinks. Why would you even get involved with tuna and egg?
Amy: No one else seems to mind it.
Guy: We mind. We really, really mind.
  • Mathematician's Answer: Rosa really does not like to talk about anything personal.
Kevin: Rosa, tell us about your family.
    Rosa: I have one.
  • Oh, Crap!: Jake has this reaction when he gets stuck on a porch after promising not to do anything stupid.
  • Pet the Dog: After throwing her (admittedly vile) food out the window and making fun of her all night (and the entire series), Gina willingly goes on an alcohol-fueled bender with Amy and has fun with her. The next day, she tells Holt it's too bad he canceled the party because Amy's cooking was delicious.
  • Pregnancy Scare: Rosa thinks she might be pregnant. She and Holt use it as an excuse to cut the dinner party short, although they keep the possible pregnancy a secret until Rosa can take a test.
  • Signs of Disrepair: When staking out the culprit, Jake and Charles stay at The Sea F am Hotel. Charles points out that the O is missing.
  • Soup Is Medicine: Jake gets hurt and is visibly in pain but insists he can work. Charles, obsessed with food, brings him 'healing soup'.
Charles: I was out getting him some healing broth. I was torn between chicken or beef, but then it hit me. Goat!
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Jake gets into a movie-style foot chase with his perp where the two end up running on top of gridlocked cars in a traffic jam. Jake is initially elated by how cool it is... until he drops down into a car's open sunroof and gets seriously injured.
  • Take That!: Jake and Terry really don't like Philadelphia for some reason.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Poor Jake cannot catch a break this episode.
