Recap / Bob's Burgers S3E4 "Mutiny on the Windbreaker"

Go To

When a cruise ship comes to town, Bob catches the attention of the ship's captain. The Belchers are invited aboard for a day, but it leaves with them on it.

Mutiny on the Trope-breaker:

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Louise's nail extensions are sharp enough to pick up food like kebabs, leave claw marks in the climbing wall and deflate a beach ball with a single poke.
  • Ambiguously Bi: When Duval orders Bob to kiss him, Bob's only objection is that it's not a good time.
  • Bad Boss: Captain Flarty is essentially holding the entire crew against their will. When he announces that Bob has escaped, he says that the first crew member to find him will get their passport back.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Bob shouts "WHAT?!" after realizing the ship left while he and his family were still on it.
  • Cassandra Truth: Everyone thinks Bob is trying to hog the rotten oysters for himself, not believing him when he tells them not to eat them. They eat the oysters despite his protests and promptly pay for it.
  • Cruise Episode: The episode is set on a cruise.
  • Didn't Think This Through: When Bob tries to run from Captain Flarty.
Captain Flarty: Go ahead, run! Unless you can run on water, there's nowhere for you to go!
    Bob: Dammit, you're right!
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Tina and Louise aren't at all interested in joining Linda at the spa. Tina, however, immediately changes her mind upon seeing the masseuse.
  • Epic Fail: Louise's distraction only leads Flarty and the crewmates directly to Bob rather than away from him. Bob lampshades it.
  • Foreshadowing: When the Belchers first arrive, a crewmate runs off to warn them about something only to be subdued and dragged off by the other crewmates (he can later be seen Bound and Gagged behind a door). While the fact that Flarty plans on keeping Bob on board was already hinted at, this also hints at how the rest of the crew isn't happy with their current situation either, allowing Bob to rally them together in a mutiny.
  • French Jerk: Duval is not a happy or polite individual, and is extremely French.
  • Funny Background Event: When Linda gets a drink at the bar, Louise can be seen trying to grab a glass, but can't due to her long nail extensions.
  • Gold Digger: Marilyn the manatee puppet exploits Gene's attraction to her to try to get money.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Duval constantly serving canned food allows Bob to use one of the cans to create an escape route. Bob even lampshades it as he's making a hole in the wall.
Bob: Thanks for serving canned meat, Duval.
  • Imagine Spot: All of the Belchers minus Bob have one when the captain offers to take them on the cruise. Linda, Tina and Gene fantasize about being painted naked, while Louise imagines herself laughing at the sinking ship.
  • Jerkass: Hermann, who sees Gene’s crush on his puppet Marilyn and tries to con him out of $100.
  • Kick the Dog: Louise uses her long nails to pop a ball some kids are playing with.
  • Lethal Chef: Duval makes Jimmy Pesto's Pizzeria seem like a three-star restaurant.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Duval and the other crewmates join Bob in mutiny after ages of mistreatment at the hands of Flarty.
  • No, You: After Bob tells Duval that his oysters are spoiled, Duval retorts that Bob is spoiled.
  • Oh, Crap!: Bob, when he realizes that the ship is moving.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Hermann uses Gene's infatuation for his puppet Marylin the Manatee to con him, only that he slowly comes to really regret toying with Gene when the latter keeps pestering "Marylin" and annoy Hermann indirectly.
  • Perverse Sexual Lust: In-universe example with Gene who falls in love with Marilyn.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Despite his insane desire to keep Bob, Flarty seems genuine in giving the rest of the family a free vacation.
    • Hermann uses Marilyn the Manatee to let Gene down gently (mostly because Hermann was incredibly annoyed by how gullible Gene was the whole time, especially while Hermann was busy vomiting from eating the bad oysters, but still).
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode title is a reference to Mutiny on the Bounty.
  • Rule of Three: Louise is the third Belcher to have a fantasy about the Windbreaker... and of course she's the one whose fantasy has nothing to do with the others, imagining herself laughing at the sinking ship.
  • Running Gag: The first mate keeps having to clean up after Captain Flarty's pet capybara Kiki.
  • Scare Chord: An ominous note is played when Duval, the ship's head chef, says that he was a guest chef for one night...fifty-six voyages ago! It turns out the scare chord was actually his cooking timer.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After returning to find the restaurant window is covered in rotten meat since he was only planning to cook a single meal aboard the cruise ship instead of being held hostage there for an entire week and thus he didn't bother cancelling his meat delivery, Bob declares that he's going to bed and not deal with it.
  • Semiaquatic Species Sailor: Flarty's pet capybara, Kiki, is a non-anthropomorphic example, being a semiaquatic animal and the pet of a cruise ship captain.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Linda, Tina, and even Gene picture themselves being drawn naked aboard a ship, while Louise pictures herself laughing maniacally as it sinks. Also, the tanning bed Linda uses is branded "Ti-TAN-ic."
    • Linda calls the bartender aboard the ship Isaac.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • One-Hour Work Week is thoroughly defied; though the other Belchers really want to go on the cruise (to the point where everyone has an Imagine Spot about it), Bob refuses the captain's offer on the basis he has to run his restaurant and can't afford to shut down for a day. The only reason he and his family are still on the cruise is because it departed without his knowledge.
    • Tina's dream of getting a massage is halted when the masseuse points out that he can't give her a full-body massage because she's a minor and no other adults are supervising. She settles for a head rub.
    • Louise tries to use her newfound Wolverine Claws to scale a climbing wall... only for them to struggle to hold her body weight and ultimately break.
  • Twitchy Eye: Captain Flarty's eye twitches when Bob refuses his offer to serve as his chef.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: We see several ship guests puking after eating the bad oysters from the brunch.
  • We Need a Distraction: Bob employs Louise's help in distracting Flarty so he can stop the oysters from being served. Louise fails, but she seems genuinely excited to have "helped" and Bob doesn't hold it against her.
  • Wolverine Claws: Louise gets the ship's manicurist to give her comically long nail extensions on her fingers and toes.
