Recap / Big Hero 6 The Series S 2 E 18 The Present

Go To

When Hiro discovers a wrapped present in the closet, he assumes it's from Aunt Cass and takes it in order to figure out what it is. However, after a mix-up, the present becomes lost and Hiro enlists the Big Hero 6 team to track it down.

Tropes in this episode:

  • An Asskicking Christmas: Big Hero 6 fight Steamer and the other villains on Christmas.
  • Artistic License: It is unlikely that stores would wait until Christmas to decorate, nor would there be final exams so close to Christmas (much less the quarter still going by then — most autumn quarters for colleges end a couple of weeks before Christmas).
  • Bait-and-Switch: It seems that El Fuego is about to pick Hiro's present for the holiday gift exchange... only to pick the present next to it.
  • Christmas Episode: Specifically, it takes place during the first Christmas after Tadashi's death.
  • Dreaming of a White Christmas: Hiro uses Tadashi's device to make it snow around the Lucky Cat.
  • Elemental Baggage: Tadashi's snow machine, which explicitly works by altering atmospheric conditions to naturally generate snow, malfunctions and somehow creates enough snow to completely fill the Lucky Cat from the inside.
  • Flashback: A flashback in the opening shows the last Christmas with Tadashi, who had invented a snow machine that didn't quite work right.
  • Genius Bonus: Aunt Cass sings the "Joyous sing we all together", but not the next line of the carol, "heedless of the wind and weather", be because she's buried by the snow from Tadashi's snow machine.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Big Hero 6 and the villains enjoy a Christmas party together. It doesn't last long.
  • Holiday Ceasefire: Zig-zagged. When the team barge into a supervillain Christmas party looking for Hiro's present, Baron von Steamer insists that there be no fighting on the occasion. Unfortunately, Mr. Sparkles decides to snatch Hiro's present For the Evulz, inciting a battle that ends with the villains defeated.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Baron Von Steamer stops Big Hero 6 and the villains from fighting because "Christmas is a time for peace... and I will destroy anyone who disagrees!".
  • Manchild: Krei when talking to Santa Claus (actually Baymax in a Santa suit).
  • Never Say "Die": In a Shout-Out to the original movie, Baron Von Steamer threatens to “destroy” anyone who disagrees with his philosophy of Christmas.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • Granville is as stern as ever while the class is doing the final exam, but when Hiro finishes and starts to leave, she gives him condolences for Tadashi, then hugs him and gives him a candy cane.
    • Krei happily joins Judy in visiting her nana for Christmas.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Villains Out Shopping: When Big Hero 6 storm Baron Von Steamer's lair, they find that he, Noodle Burger Boy, Mr. Sparkles, Supersonic Sue, and El Fuego are just having a Christmas party.
  • You Didn't Ask: When Baymax reveals that the present Hiro assumed to be from Aunt Cass is actually from Tadashi, Hiro asks why he didn't say something earlier. Baymax explains that Hiro asked him not to reveal anything about the present, and is only doing so now to correct Hiro on who it was from.
