A hero and his idol, competing for popularity.
Ben meets his childhood hero, Captain Nemesis, who is not happy that his fame is being eclipsed by Ben's own time in the limelight.

Tropes

  • Accidental Misnaming: Nemesis thinks Ben’s name is “Tim Bennyson”.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Ben has stopped Captain Nemesis/Overlord from his nefarious scheme and has saved his relationship with Julie. Nonetheless, it is sobering that Captain Nemesis has fallen from grace, allowing himself to be consumed by his pride and envy towards Ben.
  • Breather Episode: A lighthearted adventure compared to both the previous and following episodes, especially compared to its sequel episode.
  • Broken Pedestal: Captain Nemesis/Overlord is this to Ben. He used to worship Captain Nemesis as a child, and he still feels starstruck around his presence as a teenager. But when Captain Nemesis threatens Julie's life and will go as far as destroy the city with his overloading suit, any respect Ben has for him quickly evaporates.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent for six episodes since her falling out with Ben in "Duped", Julie returns in this episode.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl:
    • Julie is shown to dislike Jennifer Nocturne for being affectionate towards Ben, especially hating how the news constantly shows her kissing Ben. She is seen taking her rage out on the tennis court, where she hits several tennis balls, imagining she is hitting them at Jennifer. She's so worked up that she even attempts to hit Captain Nemesis with her racket in an adrenaline-fueled rage, not that it does anything.
Captain Nemesis: ...Good! Fight back! I like that.
    • Gwen is just as clingy, outright giving Jennifer an Implied Death Threat when the latter starts hitting on Kevin.
Gwen: I will peel you like a grape.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Ben does his usual thing of calling out his alien's name when he transforms, Captain Nemesis tries the same thing to look cool. Ben points out it sounds "stupid" coming from Captain Nemesis. To this, Nemesis responds with "My name's not 'Stupid'."
  • Didn't Think This Through: To win in the speed contest, Nemesis shoots Rath in the face with a rocket. Cue Nemesis getting his leg twisted by a very angry Rath.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Water Hazard can adjust the temperature of the water he shoots and can absorb moisture in this episode.
  • Engineered Heroics: Captain Nemesis releases Computron and his minions from Dimension 12 so he could stop them and look good, unfortunately for him, Ben arrives at the scene and destroys them easily.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Ben might enjoy his fame as a world-renowned superhero, but he doesn't let his fame get in the way of doing the right thing. The fact that Captain Nemesis is unable to put aside his envy and turns to villainy disgusts Ben.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When preparing to face off for the tug-of-war contest, Captain Nemesis mimicks Ben's Transformation Name Announcement, prompting Ben to respond:
Ben (as Four Arms): Why are you shouting your name out? It's stupid!
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Ben lividly tells off Captain Nemesis for being such a glory hound, something he himself has relapsed into recently. Still, you don't see Ben actively putting people's lives on the line for attention, not like Nemesis just did anyway.
  • Never My Fault: Will Harangue does this on Captain Nemesis's behalf, blaming Ben for the Fallen Hero's bad choices instead of admitting Ben saved lives that Nemesis actively endangered.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Nemesis claims that “Captain” doesn’t describe him accurately anymore.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Ben is so enraged when he learns that Captain Nemesis has kidnapped Julie, that when he arrives to confront him he instantly changes to Humungousaur and then Ultimate Humungousaur, without shouting either of their names and proceeds to beat down Nemesis without saying a word or cracking any jokes.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: In-Universe, Kevin dubs Ben’s “relationship” with Jennifer “Bennifer”.
  • Publicity Stunt Relationship: Ben and Jennifer Nocturne engage in this to improve both their careers. It's such a stunt that Julie's not even jealous, even claiming that Ben has a bigger crush on Captain Nemesis.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Ben delivers one to Nemesis after defeating him.
Ben: How could you do this?! You used to be a hero, I had your poster on my wall! Did you forget? This isn't about fame! It's about helping people!
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons:
    • Ben immediately identifies the hostage situation at the "Darkfall" premiere as a publicity stunt. It is, but for Nemesis, not the movie.
    • Harangue describes Ben and Nemesis as "One great hero and a sore loser" during the final round of the contest between them. He intended for the latter to refer to Ben, but it more accurately describes Nemesis.
  • Sadistic Choice: Nemesis kidnaps both Julie and Jennifer Nocturne and puts them in danger, saying Ben only has enough time to save one of them, before dropping them from a potentially fatal height. Ben doesn't hesitate to save Julie, with Gwen and Kevin saving Jennifer.
  • That Man Is Dead: Captain Nemesis does this when he makes his complete transformation into a villain, changing his name to "Overlord".
