Recap / Batman The Brave And The Bold S 1 E 7 Dawn Of The Deadman

Go To

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Gentleman Ghost begs Batman for help when his undead army turns on him and begins dragging him down to the underworld.
  • And the Adventure Continues: Deadman reveals he's opted to stay on Earth, saying he will find his killer and do assorted good deeds in the process (starting with saving Batman from a messy situation).
  • Character Development: Deadman starts out rather pessimistic, even at his most helpful. After he lets Batman know his pessimism stems from his unsolved case, Batman assures him that he at least is still looking into it and won't rest. In turn, he decides to take more initiative in using his ability for good.
  • Copycat Mockery: In order to talk to Green Arrow, Batman has to possess Speedy. Green Arrow initially thinks this is just a bad impression, so he shows him how it's done.
Green Arrow: [deep voice] I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman! And these are my hammers for justice!
  • Crazy-Prepared: Green Arrow reveals he always has Nth Metal arrowheads on hand just in case he runs into someone like Gentleman Ghost.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Losing the artifacts means losing control of the undead army. The Gentleman Ghost is quickly overwhelmed and pulled underground.
  • The Dreaded: Deadman initially wants out when he learns Batman is going up against Gentleman Ghost, saying the guy is known among their kind for being quite a piece of work.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Green Arrow quips that getting killed by Kite Man would be such an inglorious end for a hero.
  • Dying Declaration of Hate: Well undying anyway since Gentleman Ghost is already dead but it carries the same as he curses Batman as his minions drag him to hell.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Green Arrow isn’t a jerk to Speedy the way he is in the season 2 sidekick-centric episode.
  • Everybody Has Standards: Deadman suggests to Batman that he could use just any civilian to help dig Batman out of the coffin Gentleman Ghost buried him in. Batman would allow if it were only that easy, but he anticipates that Gentleman Ghost will have a booby trap or two set in place should anybody try to unearth the Dark Knight. If anything, Batman would rather a professional hero try it than risk an innocent life in the process.
  • Flashback: When Deadman explains how he was killed by someone with a Hook Hand.
  • Go into the Light:
    • Batman sees a white light appear, and the spirits of Thomas and Martha Wayne emerge to invite him to cross over. Deadman warns that he better be sure about this, as there's no coming back from this. Ultimately, Batman refuses to take Martha's hand, as he knows it isn't his time yet.
    • Deadman gets his own long-awaited opportunity at the end of the episode, but he ultimately takes a pass so that he can do some good in the world.
  • Hero of Another Story: Green Arrow and Speedy are in London to capture a jewel thief they've chased from the U.S. and succeed in busting the crook just before Batman and Deadman ask for their help.
  • How We Got Here: The episode begins with Batman rising from the grave through Astral Projection, saying he isn't dead, then revealing how he ended up being Buried Alive.
  • I Choose to Stay: Deadman wants very badly to pass on to the next life instead of remaining a ghost, but chooses to stay a while longer and help fight crime after getting his first opportunity to cross over. Earlier, Batman makes the same decision, although, unlike Deadman, he doesn’t want to pass over in the first place.
  • Pursued Protagonist: The teaser segment begins in the Bad Future with Batman, Kamandi, and Doctor Canus running from a group of rat men to try and reach a time portal so Batman can take the cure to a deadly disease back to his own time.
  • Race Against the Clock: Green Arrow and Speedy have about an hour to dig up Batman or he's dead for real.
  • Shout-Out: Possibly, when the fake seance is being performed. The ghost of Tom Baker's being invoked by his nephew Colin, and one has to wonder if it was a reference to those guys.
  • Symbolism: The cloak Deadman initially wears represents his pessimism and overall defeatist attitude. He sheds it once Batman not only tells him he's still looking into his case, but inspires him to be more helpful.
  • Tempting Fate: Batman says they need the help of a fellow hero. The only one in sight is Green Arrow, much to his annoyance.
  • This Cannot Be!: Batman's response to seeing the ghosts of his parents beckoning him.
  • The Unsolved Mystery: Boston Brand was murdered during a circus performance by an unidentified man with a Hook Hand. He has no idea why, and the whole thing just faded into obscurity. Batman, however, says he remembers and has been trying to solve the case.
  • Villains Want Mercy: While being Dragged Off to Hell, Gentleman Ghost literally begs for help. Batman actually does try to help him, but his efforts aren't enough.
