Recap / American Dad! S4E3 "Dope & Faith"

Go To

Stan realizes he has no actual friends, until he meets a like-minded conservative named Brett. However, their friendship hits a snag when Stan learns his friend is an atheist. Meanwhile, Roger tricks Steve into joining a drug lab, thinking it's the American campus of Hogwarts.

Tropes:

  • Aside Glance: Stan give one when Brett's wife sarcastically says it wasn't like somebody shot an experimental beam into her head and made her a lesbian.
  • Asshole Victim: Whilst what he goes through is needlessly cruel, a closer look at Brett's character shows he has the same negative traits as Stan himself, such as his bullying of others not close to him and xenophobia. He even states he's closed-minded. It's surprising that his apparent reason for being sent to hell was because he committed suicide of all things.
  • Autobots, Rock Out!: Kicks in after Roger accidentally snorts the brick of cocaine and starts fighting the drug dealers.
  • Brick Joke: Steve believes "Lavate los manos" is a spell when he's being told to wash his hands in Spanish. When the drug dealers attack Roger, he says it repeatedly, thinking it'll save them from the "Death Eaters."
  • Bring My Brown Pants: When the drug dealers grab Roger, he pathetically says that he pooed.
  • The Cameo: Eartha Kitt voices the fortune teller who tells Steve that he's special.
  • Cannot Tell Fiction from Reality: Steve is reading Harry Potter and thinks it's real. At the drug lab, he believes making cocaine is potions class. Roger also gives him a chopstick and tells him it's a magic wand.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Brett off-handedly mentions that he has a restaurant while boxing with Stan. This comes into play later when Stan tries to turn him to faith by ruining his life.
  • Consolation Backfire: Brett tries to find solace after losing his house that he still has his restaurant and his family, but Stan quickly takes care of them.
  • Driven to Suicide: After Stan blows up his house, closes his restaurant, and turns his wife into a lesbian, Brett jumps off a building.
  • Gone Horribly Wrong: In an attempt to get Brett to turn to God, Stan decided to make him suffer, effectively ruining his life. Instead, Brett jumped off a building. Making matters worse, Brett gets sent to Hell for committing suicide and meets The Devil, who inspires him to become a Satanist.
  • Hollywood Satanism: Brett comes back to life and says that he went to Hell and came back as a satanist. He even has a goat guitar.
  • Hypocritical Humor: "I don't need science! That's exactly what I'm trying to disprove!"
  • Implausible Deniability: Stan tries to hang out with Bullock, only for Bullock to claim he's not at home while speaking in a Hispanic accent. Stan then says he can see him through the window.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Stan thinks a person will turn to God when their lives are in shambles, and so ruins Brett's to invoke this. Instead, at rock bottom, Brett tries to kill himself. It clearly never occurred to Stan that when a person's life is irrevocably destroyed, then that person probably won't want to live it.
  • Lethally Stupid: Steve buys into Roger's Harry Potter prank to an absurd degree. Roger expected Steve to buy the Acceptance Letter, then back out when he saw the crack house. Naturally, he doesn't stop Steve from going inside and is surprised when returns home. He then decides to roll with it when Steve gives him the money he is making. Then Steve takes some Cocaine to "practice" potions, casually mentioning how "Professor Icepick" won't mind. His glasses break when the gang busts in the house, so he wanders around repeating his "spell" until the action is over. And then he still thinks he is a wizard who saved the day, so Roger just rolls with it and tells Steve the next potion is one to dispose bodies in a bathtub.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Stan feels horrible when Brett tries to commit suicide and sits by his bedside at the hospital as a result of his attempts to ruin Brett's life to make him a Christian.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Roger freaks out when Steve brings cocaine home to "practice potions" and the drug dealers track him there.
    • Stan when he realises that his attempts to force Brett to become a Christian resulted in him becoming a Satanist. Fortunately Stan learns his lesson, accepts it and they stay friends.
  • Shout-Out: Roger is dressed as Tony Montana during the shootout.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Brett's wife tells him that you don't become a lesbian.
"It's not like someone shot an experimental beam into my head and suddenly I'm gay!"
  • Tempting Fate: Stan contaminates Brett's restaurant with bird flu. While reporting on it, Terry says he ate there that morning, just before throwing up.
  • Your Head Asplode: We see this as the aftermath of the CIA scientists building a laser to beam an image of the Christian God into someone's head.

"I've Still Got My Family"

In order to convert his atheist friend Brett, Stan attempts to make him turn to God by causing tragedies in his life. After his house blows up and his restaurant is shut down, Brett looks on the bright side that he still has his family. Stan figured he'd say that.
