Recap / American Dad S 4 E 2 Meter Made

Go To

Stan is assigned to be a meter maid after beating one up for giving him a ticket. Meanwhile, Roger paints an erotic painting of Hayley.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Stan assumes that Turlington is coming to arrest him, so he and Francine destroy all of the opulent things they bought with the stolen quarters. However, Turlington was actually coming to give Stan a certificate for the completion of his community service, and had already determined that Stan mustn't have been the thief because he's a "trustworthy CIA agent." And even if Stan was the culprit, he never would have heard from the department again.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Hayley doesn't get mad at Steve for masturbating to Roger's painting of her and beats up Roger for using the painting to traumatize her brother.
  • Bullying a Dragon: The Meter Maid really shouldn't have laughed at Stan's misfortune, considering he's twice his size and much stockier, and clearly already on edge.
  • Diplomatic Impunity: Francine wants Stan to have Jamaican painter Belmonpan paint their house. He tries to use his status as a meter maid to muscle him, but Belmonpan reveals that he's also the Jamaican ambassador and thus is immune from American parking laws thanks to his diplomatic plates.
  • Dirty Cop: Stan uses his authority as a meter maid to gain favors from those he tickets, and eventually starts stealing quarters so that he can give Francine a lavish lifestyle.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Unlike other instances of Stan's grievances, his here over a lack of respect from everyone are rather justified; despite being a member of an organisation protecting American peace, a used-car salesman is given higher dining priority over him. It's subverted rather movingly when Turlington deduces he could be trusted not to be stealing money after doing digging into his background.
  • Expy: Turlington is based on Forest Whitaker's character Jon Kavanaugh from The Shield.
  • Fiery Cover Up: Stan destroys their luxurious purchases with a flamethrower.
Stan: Fire will cleanse our sins!
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: When Stan beats up the meter maid with his ticket book, one of the offenses listed is "vehicle smells funny." It also says "check this box if the car is a piece of crap."
  • Ink-Suit Actor: Turlington looks very much like his voice actor Forest Whitaker.
  • Irony: Stan closes the episode talking about how he's back to his boring, dull job as at the CIA, while an insurgency battle is going on right behind him.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Steve is shocked and grossed out after learning that Roger's painting, which he had masturbated to, is of Hayley.
  • No Sympathy: Stan writes a ticket for an elderly woman, who protests that if she has to pay the ticket, she won't be able to afford medicine. Stan's response before giving her the ticket anyway: "You've lived long enough".
  • Private Eye Monologue: Stan gives narration throughout the episode describing his rise and fall as a meter maid.
  • Sting: There is one using steel drums when Belmonpan reveals he's the Jamaican ambassador.
  • Turn in Your Badge: Turlington has Stan turn in his badge and his cargo shorts, not because he was the one embezzling quarters but because his community service is over.
  • Whammy Bid: While Roger is auctioning off the painting, Klaus bids $100 over Steve and Hayley's low initial bids, claiming he's proxy bidding for a wealthy anonymous patron in Zurich. Steve then bids $101, and Klaus instantly gives up. Francine ultimately outbids Steve and Hayley with $5,000.
