Recap / American Dad S 3 E 19 Joint Custody

Go To

Fed up with Jeff living in the house, Stan learns that he's wanted in Florida for smuggling marijuana.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Law: Hayley is correct that Jeff can park his van in front of the Smith house because it is on a public street. What Jeff can't do is put his property, like his laundry, on the Smith lawn which he does quite liberally. Stan would have every right to call the police for that.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: Stan hires a man with a wrecking ball to smash Jeff's van. However, Eddie doesn't actually charge people for this, leaving Stan to wonder how he's going to keep up this business model.
  • Beyond the Impossible: Stan asks why Jeff can't live with his own family. Hayley explains that he hasn't spoken to his father in years, and his mother ran away before he was born. Stan is naturally perplexed as to how this is possible.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Jeff presents Stan with what he claims is a magic flute that summons a leprechaun, which can only be used three times. During the standoff at the rail crossing, he blows on it, and is dismayed when the leprechaun doesn't appear. But after he escapes and Stan drives off, it's shown that the leprechaun is real, and he tells Roger to inform Jeff that this still counts as one.
    • While high, Roger buys an enormous bag of cat food because "he thinks he's getting lighter" and will float away. At the end, he drops the bag and does indeed float into the sky. But once the effects of the marijuana wear off, he plummets back.
  • Chekhov's Gun: When Jeff takes a shower with Stan, he finds that Stan shaves his chest, which he says is for work. Later, it's shown that Stan was wearing a wire, which is why he shaves his chest.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • Steve attempts to hot-wire Francine's car because she can't find her keys. He does this by touching the battery with a screwdriver, which instantly electrocutes him.
    • Mr. Fischer mutters that he was going to kill Stan and Roger... while in the presence of several police officers.
    • Henry also planted the weed in Jeff’s van to have him smuggle it into Florida without telling him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: As much as he can't stand Jeff, Stan is appalled that Mr. Fischer is such a humongous jerk to his son.
  • Hate Sink: Henry Fischer has absolutely no redeeming qualities. He constantly derides his son for having zero accomplishments, though Jeff thinks he's merely joking. When he finally turns Jeff into the police, Henry outright says he only cares about the money.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Henry is introduced giving a sarcastic bit about Jeff's missing awards to highlight what a loser he thinks he is. Stan points out how horrible he is but Jeff defends him, saying that's just him joking around. It's later revealed that Henry not only plans to turn Jeff into Florida Police to collect the bounty but was the one who planted the weed in his van in the first place.
Jeff: You're wrong about my dad! He cares more about me than anything.
Henry: (comes out with police officers and points them to Jeff) There's your criminal, just give me the money. That's all I care about, money. Not Jeff, money.
Jeff: See! Wait, am I Jeff or Money? Oh man, I'm Jeff.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Henry proves he can be just as stupid as his son, as when the police heard him muttering about trying to kill Stan and Roger, he admits it because he can't prove it because he's not wearing a wire. He point blank reminds him he's a cop as he arrests him.
  • Oh, Crap!: Stan, when he realizes that he and Roger are actually high.
  • Overly Long Gag: One of the best and most famous in the show's history: Henry Fischer and his "Missing Awards" act. Stan later admits he appreciates Henry's "Commitment to the bit", but feels he is being too hard on Jeff.
  • Potty Failure: Roger pisses all over himself and Stan when they are tied up back to back. Fortunately we don't see it.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Henry ties up Stan and Roger in his marijuana barn. In an attempt to escape, Roger kicks a lantern because "he saw it in a movie" and this sets the place on fire. The two are then shown walking out, wondering how they managed to escape. Stan speculates that they did some stuff from the movie Backdraft, which neither of them actually saw.
  • Shout-Out: Roger tries different Bounty Hunter costumes on including Boba Fett, Greedo, and The Predator before settling on Dog the Bounty Hunter.

Jeff's Dad

Jeff's father does a sarcastic bit where he acts like Jeff's awards were stolen and hears he never had any, in order to call him a worthless loser.

How well does it match the trope?
