Recap / American Dad! S3E14 "An Apocalypse to Remember"

Go To

Stan arrives late to a nuclear war drill at the CIA, and thinking it's real, takes his family into the mountains. Meanwhile, Roger needs a new blender and decides the easiest way to do it is to get married in a week.

Tropes:

  • Blackface: Stan only skimmed the African-American event invite for keywords, which were "black" and "face." Needless to say, the attendees are furious when they arrive in blackface. The full name of the event was "Black People Changing the Face of America."
  • Bowdlerise: As of 2023, when ITV2 airs the episode, all the scenes related to the blackface plot element are cut out.
  • But What About the Astronauts?: When his cell phone rings, Stan thinks there might be survivors, like an astronaut in orbit. But it's really Roger telling him the world didn't end.
  • Cassandra Truth: Having realized that Stan was lying about the world ending, the family doesn't believe him when he sees that Buckle has followed them home. It's only when Buckle appears at the wedding that they realize Stan was right.
  • Descent into Addiction: Steve becomes addicted to hallucinogenic berries while in the woods.
  • Everyone Has Standards: After realizing he's walked into a camp for deaf children, Stan begins talking loudly about how he's going to steal from them. He also says that Marlee Matlin sucks, before immediately taking it back and saying he enjoyed her role on The West Wing.
  • Fourth-Date Marriage: Exploited by Roger. Convinced that the easiest way to get a new blender in time for Grey's Anatomy is to get married, he builds a wedding registry so that someone will give it to him as a gift. He find a Jewish woman named Sharri and proposes on their first date. Because she's over 35 and never married, she instantly agrees.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Buckle. He used to be an imagineer at Disney, and his treehouse is suitably impressive.
  • Hidden Depths: Klaus plays "Hava Nagila" on wine glasses.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Steve clarifies that Morgan Freeman was trying to strangle him for wearing blackface, Stan says that he was the narrator in March of the Penguins, a powerful piece of cinema...that he's never seen.
  • Idiot Ball: Apparently, none of the Smiths questioned Stan's decision to put them in blackface until they had arrived outside the reception. Steve asks if he was positive the invite asked for blackface right before they open the door.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: Stan insists there's no time to save Roger, even though Francine points out that he's standing right in the window.
  • It's All About Me: Sharri. Justified as she is the bride, but when Stan and Buckle fight, she tells her dad to do something because no one's looking at her.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": The Smiths become absolutely giddy when Stan says they're going to meet Denzel Washington.
Stan: He's like Harrison Ford dipped in chocolate!
  • Liar Revealed: Stan tries to save face by claiming that the world really did end, but eventually the family comes across a city still bustling with activity.
  • Oh, Crap!: Roger starts to panic when he tries to blow off the wedding, but Mr. Rothberg accepts none of his excuses.
Roger: I lied, I'm not really an orthodontist.
Mr. Rothberg: That's okay, you can work for my greeting card company.
    Roger: I'm also not Jewish.
    Mr. Rothberg: You'll convert.
Roger: (panicking) I'm not even human.
    Mr. Rothberg: Who is?
  • Poor Communication Kills: Bullock tells the staff that the global thermonuclear attack drill must be treated as 100% real to ensure the absolute best results. When Stan arrives late, he asks if it's real and when Bullock says "100%," he runs out screaming.
  • Sarcasm Mode: Roger sarcastically thanks Stan for saving him and Klaus, i.e. abandoning them at home when he thought the world was ending.
  • Take That!: Buckle tells the Smiths that he and his fellow Disney imagineers could build things like his treehouse in their sleep, literally, because there was a machine that stole their dreams. The machine is figurative, because its name was Michael Eisner.
  • Tempting Fate: Stan tries to sneak into a nearby daycamp, then finds that it's for deaf children and so he doesn't bother being quiet. He sings to himself about "taking food from the helpless deaf kids," only to see one of them looking right at him.
