S1 - Ep 6: Forming the Team
Luz mulls over Shigaraki's words after waking up and starts organising her team before peace time runs out, as well as explaining their powers to each other.
This chapter contains examples of:
- Animal-Themed Superbeing: Carla's power is to transform into a black cat-human hybrid.
- Bad Powers, Good People: All For One is the one Quirk Luz would never have wanted, believing it to be evil and Greed incarnate.
- Bilingual Bonus: Marcone sometimes speaks Italian. Translations below.
- Signorina Comandante (Miss Commander).
- Blade Below the Shoulder: Both Jean and Theodore's Quirks are these.
- Breather Episode: Compared to previous and next chapter, nothing too big or dark happens here.
- Campfire Character Exploration: Luz and her team explain their powers to each other over the campfire.
- Casting a Shadow: Judy's Quirk is Darkness, it allows her to create a black, fiery substance from her hands. She can also shoot it out of her fingers, like projectiles. She can hide in her shadow substance for stealth.
- The Chosen One: Despite believing Shigaraki to be a Unreliable Expositor and seeing her Power Parasite Quirk as evil, Luz still embraces this as it appeals to her I Just Want to Be Special wish.
- Creating Life: Marcone's Quirk does this to inanimate objects.
- Didn't Think This Through: When a concerned Julia notices that Luz doesn't look alright, she suggests that she should see a doctor. Luz snarks that the governor that kidnapped them wants them all dead so why would he provide them a doctor if they got sick? Though she does apologize for her rudeness.
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Downplayed. Luz notes there was a part of her that hated seeing someone was worried about her. Though she's more polite than most examples, instead just telling them she's fine.
- Dramatic Irony: Luz notes that All For One mannerisms gives her the vibes of a bona fide Supervillain that wants nothing more than to Take Over the World. Unbeknownst to her that's exactly who he is.
- Gratuitous Italian: Marcone at one point speaks in Italian.
- Greed: Luz believes that the All For One Quirk is the symbol of Greed incarnate.
- Growling Gut: Luz gets this at the end of the chapter and decides to have some hotdogs at the campfire before going back to bed.
- Healing Hands: Arla's Quirk "Repair" allows the teen to Heal Thyself and other living beings. Because of this Luz makes her The Medic of their team.
- Hearing Voices: Even when she's wake, Shigaraki can still talk to Luz, while causing her headaches.
- Instant-Win Condition: When Luz reveals her Power Parasite ability to her entire team, instead of being afraid of her like she thought they'd be, Johnny points out how incredibly useful that's going to be in this Deadly Game and consider her The Ace in the hole for the Alpha Squadron to De-power the other teams if they try to kill them.
- Internal Reveal: Luz reveals to her team that her Quirk is All For One and allows her to give and take Quirks from others. They take this better than she expected.
- Jerkass Has a Point: While she was a bit rude, Julia concedes Luz is right that the governor that kidnapped them wants them all dead. So why would he provide them a doctor if they got sick?
- Judge, Jury, and Executioner: Luz concludes that she and the rest of the kidnapped superpowered teens were all expected to be this to each other in the Death Game.
- Life Isn't Fair: Luz realized this pretty quickly at school, especially with people making fun of her for being "weird" or "crazy", or stole her lunch money.
- Meaningful Name:
- Ronny's last name is Armstrong and he a has Super-Strength Quirk.
- Jean's last name is Pierce and has a Quirk produces sword-like blades all over his body.
- Nightmare Sequence: Julia believes Luz has had this, after her first encounter with All For One.
- O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Luz realises that Shigaraki might not be lying about the Addictive Magic her Quirk causes, when she talks usually cold to Julia.
- Personality Powers: Stanley has Nerves of Steel so its fitting he has Shock Absorption, giving him an equally tough body.
- The Power of Friendship: Johnny mocks this, saying that this isn't gonna save anyone in a Deadly Game.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Luz lampshades that All For One's red piercing eyes gave her the chills.
- Shout-Out:
- Luz remembers from when she watched a Let's Play of Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony, a particular saying: Truth can be found in another man's lies.
- Luz mentions to her team that she's played a handful of strategy games to some form of game plan, including Command & Conquer. Some of her team members even refer to her as Commander.
- When Luz hears about Carla's Quirk, it notes it sounds like its something out of One Piece, like a Zoan-type Devil Fruit.
- Spirit Advisor: All For One presents himself as an Evil Mentor version of this to Luz, since he's literally stuck in her head and she needs help learning about her powers.
- Stealth Expert: Because of her Casting a Shadow quirk, Luz makes Judy part of her Recon Commander. With her power, she can signal people to a targeted location. That, and she can hide in the dark, like camouflage.
- Teens Are Monsters: Defied; Luz's team soon prove to be perfectly nice to each other despite the dangerous situation they're in and pointing out how her Power Parasite Quirk can help them live.
- Troubled Fetal Position: The last words that Shigaraki had told her made Luz want to curl up into a ball and forget it all he said.
- Unreliable Expositor: Luz considers Shigaraki to be this. He claims that their Quirk gives the bearer an inherent addiction to stealing Quirks even if means hurting others, but Luz has no idea if he's outright lying to manipulate her into stealing Quirks or actually telling the truth. She considers it to be worse if he's being honest with her and wants to discount everything that Shigaraki had told her but concludes that he's most likely mixing the truth with his lies.
- Vibration Manipulation: Johnny Marshal's quirk is this.
