S1 - Ep 11: The Hunt Begins - Part 1
When Luz discovers the fate of Julia and some of her new friends, something inside her finally snaps that All For One takes advantage of.
This chapter contains examples of:
- Attack on the Heart: Luz kills Thomas with her new Vibration Manipulation to make his heart explode.
- Berserker Tears: After discovering bodies of her summer camp friends, Luz's tears of sorrow soon turns to tears of rage under All For One's sway.
- Big Brother Instinct: Stanley has shades of this for Luz, as she reminds him of his little sister, Maria who's the same age as her, which part of the reason he chose to join her team. He refuses to give her up to his former friend, Kennedy.
- Big Eater: Apparently Ronny has quite the appetite. No one faulted him, since hadn't had a decent meal in a while.
- Bitch Slap: Stanley sends Kennedy flying into a tree with one of these after the latter tries to attack him. Its enough to draw blood.
- Blood from the Mouth:
- Kennedy spits up a glob of blood after being smacked into a tree by Stanley.
- A fatal example, Thomas gushes blood from his mouth after Luz vibrates his heart to tear apart.
- Brought Down to Normal: Feeling guilty about not warning his team about Kennedy leading to some of them being killed, Stanley offers his Quirk to Luz.
- Brutal Honesty: When Luz goes over What Ifs on how she could've prevented her friends murders to herself, All For One bluntly tells her nothing she could have done would have saved them, causing the poor girl great pain and to hit her Rage Breaking Point.
- The Corrupter: While Luz is having a guilt-fuelled breakdown after discovering the slaughter of her new friends, All For One encourages her to Pay Evil unto Evil and avenge them (heavily implying that he can and is influencing her emotions somehow)... an idea that she finds appealing, as she takes the Quirks from her fallen comrades. The constant Slasher Smile she has during the time suggests a personality leak from Shigaraki to Luz.
- Critical Hesitation Blunder: Thomas's moment of indecision whether to be one to kill Luz or not costs him his life.
- Death Glare: Luz gives one to Judy as she's about to interrupt her while interrogating Stanley, shutting her up.
- Didn't Think This Through: When Stanley refuses to betray Luz for him, Kennedy punches him... forgetting his former friend has Super-Toughness. Stanley lampshades that out he should've known that wouldn't have worked.
- Disappointed by the Motive. Though more angry than disappointed, Luz doesn't take it well when she hears Kennedy say he and his team killed off her new friends for money.Anger flashed on her face. Money…? This was all for money…? Her friend… allies… dead for extra cash…?
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Darlene is described as having long, black hair, and tan pasty, white skin
- Evil Laugh: Shigaraki does this out of joy. Almost as if he had been waiting for something the like slaughter of Luz's new friends to happen for him to exploit.
- Flies Equals Evil: Flies begin to swarm the bodies of Luz's deceased friends as she waits for their killers to come back with a Slasher Smile.
- Genre Savvy: Stanley tells Kennedy he's a fool if he thinks the governor is gonna pay up the money after he hands Luz to him. Stanley's right on the money.
- Healing Hands: When Luz takes the "Repair" Quirk, she uses it to Heal Thyself to get rid of bruises left behind by her sparring with Ronny.
- Hidden Eyes: Luz has these when she's about to take the Quirks from her recently murdered friends with her Power Parasite ability.
- In the End, You Are on Your Own: Before Luz plans to wait for the 2 enemy teams to fight them, she orders the remainder of her team to flee for their lives and not come back. What's left of new friends are hesitant to leave her to fight alone but comply.
- Innocence Lost: Luz Noceda's innocence died along with her new friends.
- It's All My Fault:
- As Luz breaks down in tears, she believes she has failed her fallen comrades.
- Stanley has this reaction when he discovers that Kennedy had half his team killed because he refused to hand Luz over to him and didn't warn the others about him. This leads to him handing over his Shock Absorption Quirk to her out of guilt.
- Jerk Jock: Kennedy was part of the same soccer team with Stanley for years, and enjoyed playing basketball. He's also willing to take part in the Deadly Game for money.
- Logical Weakness: Kennedy's Quirk only is only deadly when the targets have weak wills. Those that are confident in their defenses sustain little to no damage from his strikes.
- Lovable Jock: Stanley was part of the same soccer team with Kennedy since childhood, and liked playing basketball. He also refuses to sell out Luz to his Evil Former Friend and is an all-around genuine Nice Guy.
- Mass "Oh, Crap!": The Heaven's Devils and Foxtrot become terrified as luz kills her fist person, brutally.
- Muscles Are Meaningful: Stanley has got a Heroic Build and is strong enough to overpower Kennedy who's Lean and Mean.
- Oh, Crap!: Judy and then Luz have this reaction when they see noticing a giant plume of smoke in the direction of their Home Base.
- Offwith His Head: Its implied to be how Giovanni met his end.
- Only in It for the Money: Kennedy causally mentions to Luz that he and his team because the Antagonistic Governor paid them a lot of money to do so. She doesn't take it well.
- Paint the Town Red: When Luz comes across the remains of her murdered friends, blood is described to be all over the ground like a carpet, and some of the buildings at their Home Base had giant splatters of it against the walls, haphazardly.Blood… There was so… much… blood.
- Patience Plot: Downplayed. Luz spends a partion of the chapter waiting for her friends killers to come back to the scene of the crime to avenge their deaths.
- Pet the Dog: Despite part of her wanting to blame him for the slaughter of their friends, Luz can't find it in herself to do that and instead tells Stanley its Kennedy and his team that are responsible, not him.
- Power High: Luz gets this when she takes the Quirks from her murdered friends.Power surged through her, just like the last time when she stole Cody’s power. But she didn’t stop there, oh no. She went around to every corpse in the base and took their powers.
- The Power of Hate: All For One encourages Luz to channel this to Pay Evil unto Evil on her teammate's murderers. This appeals to the young girl.Shigaraki: (Evil Laugh) Yes, Luz! Show them the real you. The one that you had buried for so long! You allowed them to control you for years, allowed them to tell you that you cannot be, or who you want to be! Let that anger boil to the top and flow over! Let it be one with you, let it become you. Unleash it! Unleash your true self upon those that took, and took, and took from you! You are above them all, and will forever be! They toyed with you, made you their plaything, and when they were done playing with you they discarded you and threw you into this camp and left you to rot! I’ve told you this before, so it bears not repeating, but you should not allow them to get away with this! This is all their fault! Let the anger you’ve let sit for years rise. Here, in this domain, you are free to do whatever you please! Do unto them what they did to you! Show them how they messed up! Show them what happens when you toy with God! Luz Noceda, do what you know you have to, and KILL THEM ALL!
- The Promise: Kennedy tries to invoke this to get Stanley to betray Luz. The pact was to help one another out, regardless of what was going on. Stanley refuses.
- Psychotic Smirk: Luz sometimes gives small, malice-filled grins, mostly notably when she takes the Quirks from her recently deceased friends.
- Rage Breaking Point: Luz reaches hers after she discovers the brutal deaths of her teammates, including her first friend, Julia Wittebane.Of all the years of being bullied. Of all the years of being called a loser. Of all the years of being treated as an outcast. Of all the years of being told to be “normal” by everyone around her, including her mom. All of it came to a boiling point. And it was all because of this… bloodbath. Her tears were no longer of sadness but of rage. Pure, unadulterated, rage. Something that she never thought she had in her.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Luz gains Shigaraki's red eyes at the climax of the chapter.
- Returning to the Scene: Luz being Genre Savvy as always believes the perpetrators always came back to the scene of the crime. She's proven as her friends killers come back two days later.
- Robbing the Dead: Luz feels some regret for taking the Quirks from her recently deceased friends with her Power Parasite ability, but she rationalizes it with the idea of needing their powers, especially since she plans to get revenge for them all.
- The Scream:
- Played for Drama. Luz does an agonising one after discovering the mangled bodies of her friends at summer camp and succumbs to All For One's influence in her rage and grief.
- Much like Julia, Stanley does this as Luz takes away his Quirk away at his request.
- Screw the Money, I Have Rules!: When Kennedy approaches Stanley at night and attempts he tries to get him to betray Luz for a cut of the huge prize money. Stanley all but tells him to piss off.
- She-Fu: Luz mentally notes that she's thankful to her mother for making her take gymnastics from when she was seven to eleven-years old.
- She Is Not My Girlfriend: When Kennedy accuses Stanley of having a crush on Luz when he refuses to betrayal, the unamused boy denies it, claiming she reminds him of his sister back at home.
- Shout-Out: Luz is mentioned to use Julia's Quirk "Vines" just like how Spider-Man swings around through the trees with his webbing.
- Slasher Smile: Luz gives sinister smiles as she begins reaping her vengeance on her friends murderers.
- Smug Super: Averted for Stanley. Even with his Shock Absorption power, he believed his chances of surviving the Death Camp were low enough.
- Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Luz and Kennedy say their hypothesis was right in finding the other at the scene of the crime taken place.
- Super-Persistent Predator: Luz was prepared to wait for over 48 hours with little sleep in-between and forgoing food and water for her friends' killers to return to the scene of the crime.
- Supernatural Gold Eyes: Darlene is described as having yellowish eyes and is a Quirk user.
- This Is Unforgivable!: Luz sees the slaughter of half her team as this. She was angry—no, she was beyond that. She was livid. Someone was to blame for this, she knew that much.
- Torso with a View: Carla got several of these from the opposing teams, which presumably killed her.
- Trying Not to Cry: After discovering the grisly remains of her friends, Luz told herself that she wasn’t going to cry repeatedly, over and over again. But… it didn’t work.
- We Used to Be Friends: Kennedy is this to Stanley for wanting to kill Luz for money, who were previously as thick as thieves and thought the other was awesome.
- Wham Episode: Luz's kills her first person and she isn't going to stop there.
- What Is This Feeling?: Takes a moment to realise that what she's now feeling after discovering the massacre of camp friends is a level of rage she's never thought she was capable of.
- You Remind Me of X: Luz's mannerisms and overall behaviour reminds Stanley of his sister, Marie, back home. Because of this he vowed he was going to do everything in his power to make sure she was safe.
- Your Mind Makes It Real: Kennedy's Quirk "Pain assurance" relies on the person’s understanding of pain. If the person Kennedy was going to attack understood that they were going to die, then Kennedy’s power would react to that, do the same amount of damage the person thought their attack was going to do, and put that damage into real life.
- Now… it’s my turn.
