Gerudo Tempest: Urbosa

Chief Urbosa of the Gerudo is recruited into the Champions.

Tropes:

  • Bad Boss: Astor sent footsoldiers in disguise to Urbosa knowing that she would identify them, treating them as expendable fodder, so that the Catalyst Guardians could see Urbosa's fighting style. Kolana, Sooga, and Master Kohga are not happy with this, and his excuse of Urbosa being with the princess meant that she probably wouldn't kill the Yiga comes off as a flimsy excuse.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: Master Kohga's possession by Astor's Malice manifests as a psychic version of Astor made of Malice imprisoning Kohga in a tornado of Malice. Kohga gets the willpower to fight back and even weaken the spell's hold over him.
  • Description Porn: Much of the chapter just shows off the landscape of Hyrule, showing the different ways to get to Gerudo Desert, even naming several locations and routes usable in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are other clips of characters just admiring the landscape of their home.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Ulo asks Link how he knows what Gerudo Desert looks like from the Gerudo springs. It's unmentioned the fact that only women can enter the town, but when Ulo realizes that this must mean Link was Disguised in Drag, he just goes, "Oh...".
  • A Father to His Men: Master Kohga genuinely does love his underlings, even the footsoldiers, enough that it gives him the strength to briefly break free from Astor's control over him.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Master Kohga survives the spell that's possessing him by sheer will, and then actually breaks free from control thanks to his love for his underlings, and while he ends up back under Astor's control, Master Kohga ends up weakening the spell over him. The original scene manifested as Master Kohga just simply breaking free before falling back under.
  • Healing Vat: Robbie and Cheria discover the Shrine of Resurrection's abilities, which include mild wounds, illnesses, and a long-term stasis function.
  • Language Drift: Defied. The ancient records of Hyrule were updated every few centuries to adhere to the current version of Hyrule's main language of trade to ensure that the records would be understood by later generations. But it also wasn't fully successful for a few reasons.
  • Lost in Translation: The archived records of ancient Hyrule were repeatedly updated to make sure they were written to avoid the effects of Language Drift. However, time means that some words would be faded, leaving translators to fill in the gaps, or just leave the gaps present altogether, and this means that Cheria and Robbie have some trouble trying to find anything in the archived records.
  • Mundane Utility: Ice Rods are given out to everyone trekking into the desert to keep them cool.
  • Orwellian Retcon: Just hours after publishing the chapter, the author added in a new extended scene featuring Master Kohga's possession under Astor's Malice, showing him Fighting from the Inside.
  • Revision: The flashback of Urbosa fighting the Yiga plays out from the Yiga's perspective. The only reason those two footsoldiers were in the vicinity was because Astor had sent them in to act as Cannon Fodder so that the Catalyst Guardians could witness Urbosa's skills in combat.
  • Shipper on Deck: Purah is one for Cheria and Robbie.
  • Ship Tease: Robbie and Cheria share a little moment together, including a Held Gaze, before they actually head out to Hyrule Castle.
  • Show, Don't Tell: The Orwellian Retcon did this with its change to Master Kohga's possession.
    • Original: Master Kohga breaks free from the possession, with it stated that it was because of his love for his underlings. The only shown hint of this is the Malice briefly leaving his face, and then Astor comments that he needs to strengthen the spell.
    • Retcon: Master Kohga's mind is shown, where he's imprisoned in a storm of Malice by a psychic Malice version of Astor, and the narration states that he's only alive because of his dedication to his true unrevealed purpose, otherwise he'd be dead by the spell already. Once he hears Astor's words about using his underlings as expendable cannon fodder, Kohga becomes furious and breaks free, attacking the psychic image of Astor with powers like he has in his combos in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. This allows Kohga to regain control of himself to scream in anger, until Malice Astor imprisons him yet again. However, Malice Astor is missing an arm, and the Malice tempest is weaker, making it clear that Master Kohga is breaking free from the spell, and thus Astor realizes that he needs to strengthen it.
