Battle of Hyrule Field

Hyrule's army and their best fighters fight back against the monster invasion threatening the castle.

Tropes:

  • Action Girl: Impa has no problem kicking any ass in this chapter. Tyria as an elite knight doesn't shy away from it either. Cheria too, though she's not shown fighting.
  • Adaptation Distillation: Impa's introductory moment in the original game is her running from monsters and asking Link for help while carrying the Sheikah Slate, followed by her tripping and throwing it in the air, which Link catches. That plays out similarly here, only Impa's not running from monsters.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In Guardian of Remembrance, Astor just didn't do anything to stop Harbinger Ganon when it started killing, which he saw as it choosing him. This time, the Catalysts of the Calamity do explicitly choose him...and he decides on his own to kill his cult which includes his family.
  • Apocalypse Cult: One appears at the very end, adapting the cutscene from Guardian of Remembrance where Harbinger Ganon kills everyone in the cult, only this time, Astor himself does the deed.
  • Combat and Support: Ulo is the combat with Tyria as his support. Ulo favors attack while Tyria balances offense and defense, allowing her to cover his blind spots.
  • Darkness Equals Death: The monster horde reaches Hyrule Field during the hours of night.
  • The Dead Have Names: One of the many Red Shirt soldiers killed is named Nyllo by his surviving friend.
  • Death of a Child: Many children are murdered in the attack by monsters, and their deaths are displayed in detail. Many deaths aren't shown, but their mangled bodies indeed are.
  • Distress Call: Red fireworks go off, signaling to the army that monsters are invading the settlements.
  • The Dreaded: Moblins. In the prior fic and in that fic's original game plus this one's source material, Moblins are a little difficult, but nothing the heroes can't handle. Common folks and regular soldiers are much more terrified, because they don't have the same skills to fight off their much greater strength.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Hestu's first actions taken after arriving is to scream Link's name and hug him with his bubble magic, as do his little Koroks, and it takes him time to notice the trouble, at which point he jumps to help. He's a Large Ham Plucky Comic Relief who is nonetheless one who wants to help.
  • Fantastic Fireworks: Link sets off mystical fireworks to call in some help from Hestu.
  • Fratricide: Astor murders his own brother after being chosen by the Catalyst Guardians.
  • Frontline General: King Rhoam leads his people into battle personally. Zelda is implied to want to be this, but her lack of control over her powers holds her back from it.
  • Genocide from the Inside: Astor's Apocalypse Cult is killed not by the corrupted Guardian sisters, but by Astor himself.
  • A God Am I: Astor develops a God complex after being chosen by the Calamity, saying that he wasn't chosen, he is the Calamity.
  • Offing the Offspring: Astor kills his own daughter after being chosen by the Calamity Catalyst Guardians.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Cheria helps out during the battle, but isn't actually shown fighting.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Link notes that Moblins and Bokoblins don't usually make mass attacks like that and usually just stick to their own.
  • Original Character: Bani is a character exclusive to this fanfic, as are Astor's wife and daughter, neither of whom existed in the fic, not that they exist for very long at all in this story anyway.
  • Please Wake Up: A soldier tries to get his dead friend to stand up after being attacked by Moblins, but his Neck Snap ends up being on full display instead, revealing that he's not gonna wake up.
  • Rape, Pillage, and Burn: There's no raping, but the monsters lay waste to much of the area they invade, killing and destroying anything in their way, and they don't discriminate by gender or age.
  • Red Shirt Army: A battalion of soldiers ends up surrounded by Moblins and is decimated by them, but King Rhoam comes to their rescue, but not in time to save them all.
  • Rousing Speech: Taken word for word from the opening speech from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, given from King Rhoam to the Hyrulean Army.
  • Uxoricide: Astor's wife is part of the cult, and he slaughters her along with everyone else.
  • Your Soul Is Mine!: Astor harvests the souls from everyone in his cult.
