Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 42 Mass Transit Trouble

Go To

The forty-second episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Robotnik plants time bombs at an airport, a lighthouse, and a train station to cripple them all in order to fully gain control over Mobius, forcing Sonic to circumnavigate the planet to save the day.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Agony of the Feet: When Sonic and Tails find the first bomb at the train station, Tails attempts to destroy the bomb with a sledgehammer, but Sonic tells him that the shock will set the bomb off. Tails pounds the sledgehammer, then says, "I'm sorry." It is then revealed that while he missed the bomb, he accidentally hit Sonic's foot, managing to tear off the front of his shoe, revealing his swollen foot underneath. Fortunately, Sonic is able to fix his shoe.
  • Bowdlerize: The Toon Disney broacast of this episode cuts out several scenes, including a questionable one where Sonic removes a bomb from the bottom of a chair.
  • Box Office Bomb: An in-universe example; when Sonic uses the Mobius' Intercontinental Airport's Weapons Detector to find the bomb hidden in the airport. The Weapons Detector takes him to the inside of an airplane, where the Cat Stewardess announces that their in-flight movie will be Invasion of the Colossal Celery People. Sonic then clarifies to the Weapons Detector that he wasn't looking for a movie kind of bomb, but rather one that explodes.
  • Burning Rubber: When Sonic and Tails are unable to dislodge the bomb at the signal house of Infinite Points Railroad Junction, Sonic runs around the signal house to heat up his shoes so they'll be hot enough to loosen the bomb.
  • Comedic Underwear Exposure: As he runs to the Mobius Intercontinental Airport, Sonic passes by a mummy, stripping it of its bandages and revealing a pair of white boxer shorts with red hearts on them.
  • Darker and Edgier: The stakes are higher than ever before in the series. Robotnik has planted three separate time bombs all over Mobius to cripple the planet's most important land, sea, and air complexes and grind transportation to a halt. Even Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts, usually no threat to anyone whatsoever, are more competent than usual.
  • Everything's Louder with Bagpipes: After Sonic and Tails rescue Angus McGull, the owner of Lighthouse One, they tie Coconuts to McGull's bagpipes. Coconuts uses a pair of scissors hidden in his tail to cut through the rope.
  • Go-to-Sleep Ending: This episode really pushes Sonic to his limits, as he has to disarm three bombs that are about to go off simultaneously in three different parts of Mobius. His Super Speed reaches a point where he runs on the water and only manages to be one-split second away from failing, but without an ounce of energy more to keep him awake, he goes to sleep one moment too soon, almost drowning in the process and being saved at the last second by Tails. His well-earned sleep is so heavy that he can't even hear Dr. Robotnik's shouting in the screen in front of him "I hate that hedgehog!", let alone mock him like other times.
  • Grenade Hot Potato: After Sonic recovers the bomb from Infinite Points Railroad Junction, Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts set a trap involving a trip wire that they plan to bury a bomb near. Sonic jumps over the wire before the badniks have a chance to bury the bomb. Since they don't need the bomb anymore, they toss it at each other. It explodes when Grounder fails to catch it.
  • Heroic RRoD: A big part of Robotnik's plan is having Sonic tire himself out trying to stop the S.S.S.S.S. Squad, thinking they were the problem when they were merely planting the bombs. Despite this, Sonic manages to pull out all the stops and disarm the bombs, and has to be fished out of the sea shortly afterwards by Tails.
  • Idea Bulb: When Sonic needs an idea on how to get to Lighthouse One from the Mobius Intercontinental Airport in less than fifteen seconds, a light bulb appears in a thought balloon. Sonic says, "I can do better than that!", then three feminine-looking light bulbs appear in the thought balloon and he says, "Now that's more like it!"
  • Instant Wristwatch: Sonic wears one and looks at it when he finds out that he only has fifteen seconds to get to Lighthouse One before the bombs explode.
  • Interspecies Romance: A Cat Stewardess who works at the Mobius Intercontinental Airport has a crush on Sonic.
  • Jaw Drop: Sonic does this when he arrives at the Infinite Points Railroad Junction and finds out that three trains are about to collide into each other at full speed.
  • Karma Houdini: Beyond having his plan fail and a self-inflicted injury, Robotnik doesn’t really get punished for his acts of terrorism.
  • Lighthouse Point: One of the areas Robotnik tries to sabotage is Lighthouse One, the most important lighthouse on Mobius, which all the major shipping routes pass.
  • Losing Your Head: Happens to Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts after they all get blown up by the bomb they plan to use on Sonic.
  • Missed Him by That Much: When Sonic and Tails come to the switch house at Infinite Points Railroad Junction, they find the signalman tied up there. Sonic then says, "No sign of Robotnik's stooge-bots, but there's gotta be one here somewhere." As he says this, Grounder passes by the window outside.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain:
    • Robotnik, usually bumbling and defeated handily by Sonic, manages to pull off a very deadly scheme by having his robots distract Sonic and wear him down while they plant the bombs. Already exhausted from doing so, Sonic just barely manages to disarm all three.
    • Even Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts get in on the act, successfully Out-Gambitting Sonic and managing to escape after planting the bombs.
  • Race Against the Clock: When Robotnik succeeds in planting the bombs in the airport, train station, and lighthouse, Sonic has only five minutes to find and disarm them.
  • Rule of Three: Robotnik plants bombs in Lighthouse One, the Mobius Intercontinental Airport, and Infinite Points Railroad Junction.
  • Tempting Fate: Happens twice in quick succession; After finding the signalman tied up at the signal house of Infinite Points Junction, Sonic stops to rest, declaring that he’s so tired that he "couldn't run another step if the fate of the world depended on it." Just then, Robotnik reveals to him that he planted bombs, the Mobius Intercontinental Airport, and Lighthouse One. Sonic then advises to Tails that the two of them don’t panic… only for Robotnik to reveal that they only have five minutes before the bombs go off.
    Sonic: Now we panic.
