Recap / Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog S 01 E 43 The Coachnik

Go To

The forty-third episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Robotnik constructs a P.T. robot in an attempt to increase Scratch, Grounder, and later, Coconuts' fitness; Sonic tries to use Robotnik's equipment against the robots.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Affably Evil: The Coachnik is quite supportive, optimistic and friendly despite being one of Robotnik's creations.
  • The Ahnold: Sonic disguises himself as an Arnold Schwarzenegger lookalike to trick Coconuts into lifting far more weight than he can handle. When he leaves to get more heavy objects, he says, "I'll be back!"
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Robotnik puts every kind of explosive device in his Long Bomb, with the final one being a well-shaken can of soda.
  • Aside Glance: When Sonic gives Tails the job of spying on Robotnik, Tails is eager to help and flies away. Sonic then turns to face the viewers and says, "He gets more like me every day."
  • Bowdlerise: The Toon Disney broadcast of this episode edits the scene where Scratch and Grounder try to torch Sonic to cut out a scene where Grounder squirts Scratch with crude oil.
  • Circling Birdies:
    • Stars spin around Scratch's head after Robotnik recovers him from the cliff he fell off, and Scratch says "But I can fly! I'm the Swan Queen!"
    • When Coachnik bashes Grounder's head after Robotnik sets the timer on his long bomb hidden in Grounder's body, miniature versions of Grounder spin around his head.
  • Disney Villain Death:
    • In a film Coachnik shows Scratch and Grounder, the two badniks fall from the Statue of Liberty when they attempt to chase Sonic.
    • When Sonic disguises himself as a ballet instructor, he makes Scratch perform a ballet leap that results in Scratch falling off a cliff.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Robotnik admits as much when Scratch reminds him that, even though he and Grounder bungled their plan, they did their best. This inspires him to create the Coachnik in order to improve their best.
  • Exit, Pursued by a Bear: This episode ends with Robotnik being chased away by the irate Coachnik's disembodied leg.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard:
    • One of the films Coachnik shows Scratch and Grounder is of the time they tried to stop Sonic by dropping an avalanche of boulders on him. Sonic builds a ramp at the bottom of the mountain which launches the boulders into the air, causing them to land on the badniks.
    • Robotnik creates the highly powerful Long Bomb explosive as a backup plan to destroy Sonic. The bomb itself has a radius of five miles, while his fortress itself is five-point-one miles from the old stadium. Near the end of the episode, Coachnik kicks the Long Bomb out of the stadium, hurling it towards Robotnik's fortress. Robotnik tries to escape in his Egg-O-Matic hovercraft, but that's exactly where the Long Bomb lands.
  • Inflating Body Gag: After Coconuts gets Squashed Flat from trying to lift all the heavy objects Sonic makes him lift, Robotnik uses a bicycle pump to re-inflate him.
  • Large Ham: Invoked; one of the ingredients Robotnik uses to create the titular Coachnik robot is "300 pounds of ham".
  • Losing Your Head:
    • Happens to Grounder when he gets run over by a bus thanks to Sonic rerouting the tires in the stadium's obstacle course. Coachnik is not happy when he sees this.
Coachnik: Grounder, how many times I gotta tell you? To win, you gotta keep your head!
      Grounder: Oh. Right.
    • Happens to Grounder a second time when Tails runs into Scratch and Grounder. This is how Tails discovers the Long Bomb hidden in Grounder's head.
    • At the end of the episode, this happens to Coachnik when Robotnik uses the last bearing from the Long Bomb to destroy him.
  • Painted Tunnel, Real Train: This episode provides an inverted example. When being chased by Scratch and Grounder, Sonic comes across a cliff wall that would be the perfect spot for this gag - but there's already a tunnel there. Instead, on Tails' suggestion, he paints a cliff wall over the tunnel instead. So when Scratch and Grounder catch up, they're confused when they hear a train coming but don't see it - until after it runs over them.
  • So Proud of You: At the end of the episode, Tails thinks of himself as a dumb teammate for thinking Robotnik hid something important in Grounder. Sonic tells Tails that he's proud to have him on his team for deducing the Long Bomb.
  • Time for Plan B: Coachnik's initial failure to catch Sonic leads to Robotnik creating the Long Bomb as a backup plan.
  • Visual Pun:
    • One of the films Coachnik shows Scratch and Grounder is of the time they chased Sonic through the Statue of Liberty. When the film finishes, Coachnik says, "I can't believe they fell for the old Statue of Liberty Play!"
    • At the end of the episode, after Robotnik destroys Coachnik for destroying his fortress with the Long Bomb, he tells his badniks, "I gave him the boot!" Coachnik then says, "We'll see who gives who the boot!" and chases Robotnik away with his disembodied leg, kicking him with it several times.
