Basic Trope: A work (usually a Fairy Tale or similar story) gets an adaptation, and is made Lighter and Softer for kids.

  • Straight: A retelling of Little Red Riding Hood has some key details changed; The Big Bad Wolf is simply told to spit out Red and her grandma at the end (instead of the woodsman killing him), and he has a Heel–Face Turn. They all live happily ever after.
  • Exaggerated: Reynard the Fox is adapted as a children's cartoon. All references to violence and sexual content are heavily removed, and Never Say "Die" is even in effect, making it pretty much In Name Only.
  • Downplayed:
    • The adaptation keeps most key details from the original story, but cuts them down enough to still be appropriate for kids.
    • An adaptation of The Three Little Pigs has the first two pigs going to the next house instead of getting eaten by The Big Bad Wolf. Considering many modern versions of this story have this detail changed, however, this isn't too ubiquitous.
    • The adaptation is of a work such as Reynard the Fox. It's an adult show, but with a lot fewer deaths in order to prevent Too Bleak, Stopped Caring.
  • Justified: In-universe, Alice was telling a fairy tale to children.
  • Inverted: Grimmification: a wholesome fairy tale is made Darker and Edgier.
  • Subverted: Although it seems like this adaptation of a fairy tale is going to be Lighter and Softer, a Knight of Cerebus is waiting behind the shadows...
  • Double Subverted: ...He's not actually a Knight of Cerebus after all, he's just a guy trying to bring us some cake. Oops.
  • Parodied: ???
  • Zig-Zagged: ???
  • Averted:
    • The fairy tale adaptation doesn't remove any of the mature content from the original version.
    • There is no mature content to be removed from this fairy tale.
  • Enforced:
  • Lampshaded: "I thought we were supposed to ki- I mean defeat the wolf! All he had to do was spit them out."
  • Invoked: The woodsman considers killing the wolf, but decides it'd be better to tell him to spit out Red and her grandmother instead.
  • Exploited: ???
  • Defied: The fairy tale is made into an adult work instead in order to avoid removing any of the mature content.
  • Discussed: "I kinda understand why this version of the story doesn't have nearly as much sex and violence, considering it's supposed to be for kids and all."
  • Conversed: "You know, the original story was a lot Darker and Edgier."

Back to Disneyfication. Just try not to think about how much incest and murder happened in the original story.
