The perfect look
Explanation As explained in Screen Rant, the WandaVision trailer showed us some perfect poses of Wanda living her best suburban life, and they fit perfectly into this meme format. Wanda: We are a memetic couple, you know?
Vision: Oh, I don't think that was ever in question.
Return to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe meme page here.
Please add entries in the following format:
- The meme. Explanation The explanation behind the meme.
- Further mutations and successor memes, if any.
- "We are an unusual couple..."/"I don't think that was ever in question."/"We just don't know what to expect" Explanation Wanda's, and Vision's, and... Wanda's (again), respectively, sitcom catchphrases. The trio of phrases were used extensively in the show's marketing, to the point that the community began to find the exchange obnoxious, which, as it typically does in these communities, meant that the trio of phrases began popping up in almost every discussion of the show online as an ironic meme (typically started by someone asking "Okay, that's all well and good, but I need to know... ARE THEY AN UNUSUAL COUPLE?!?!?").
- ReCAPTCHA Explanation Various uses of the ReCAPTCHA image are associated with this, including chewing bubble gum if you're not a robot - as that could "gum up the works" and reveal you are one.
- Wanda yelling at a whiteboard Explanation A variation of the Woman yelling at a cat meme, Taylor Armstrong's face is covered with Wanda's 1960s costume and the cat is replaced with the S.W.O.R.D whiteboard showing the four mysterious questions (about the hexagons, sitcoms, reality warping, and Vision being alive).
- Wanda yelling at Monica Explanation People also noted the similarity between this image◊ from Wanda's confrontation with Monica and the woman yelling at cat meme
- "My wife and her flying saucers." / "My husband and his indestructible head." Explanation The scene in the top, Thanos ripping the mind stone out of Vision's head below it.
- Jimmy Woo's character development Explanation Jimmy introduces himself to Monica by casually producing his business card using the sleight-of-hand trick he was last seen trying to figure out in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Fans immediately latched onto this, saying things along the lines of being proud of him for figuring it out, that it was impressive use of continuity and character development, and the like.
- The Quicksilver card from Capital One Explanation Given the fake commercials in most of the episodes and that there is an actual credit card called the Quicksilver card with Samuel L. Jackson in the commercials for it, many fans joke that this is actual foreshadowing of the premise of the show.
- Dead Vision Explanation Wanda in Episode 4 sees Vision as he looks like when he's dead (grey with white eyes and the hole in his forehead) Various memes come up with depictions of what Wanda's reaction was.
- Darcy Lewis represents the fans Explanation Darcy's reaction to each of the sitcoms - which she watches with awe, her reactions to the various scenes (such as Vision and Scarlet Witch kissing) make her react in ways that fans may react.
- Big Magneto Energy Explanation Many have related the way Wanda turned the "murdering squad" (Brainwashed S.W.O.R.D. agents with guns) against the "murderer" (Hayward) (as Darcy puts it) and how it relates to Magneto turning guns on their users.
- "You didn't see that coming?" Explanation Quicksilver's Catchphrase from Age of Ultron, which has become even more relevant when Ralph Bohner, played by Evan Peters (who plays the other Quicksilver), claiming to be Pietro arrived at Wanda's door.
- "Herb/the stork/the couch/etc. is Mephisto" Explanation Many viewers theorized that the true Big Bad behind the Westview Anomaly was the demon Mephisto (who played a role in the comics that inspired the plot of the show), and there's been rampant speculation as to which character is his secret identity. Naturally the theories have been parodied (mainly by those who disagree with them), with people joking that anyone or anything in the show could be Mephisto in disguise. As it turns out, it was none of these things, as Mephisto didn't appear at all. The closest Mephisto has appeared so far is in this shot◊ from The Avengers (2012) (zoom in on the caption at the bottom of the picture).
- PLEASE STAND BY...Explanation Another regular feature of the series; this pops in at the start of the closing credits. Fans have used it to poke at the suspense between episodes. It has even been labeled as the Big Bad of the series by fans.
- "It's an oversimplification of events, but yes."Explanation Jimmy Woo responds with this line when Hayward attempts to summarize the series of events that led to the Westview anomaly. It has since been used as a meme to describe bad summaries of story plots. E.g. "Single father attempts to end world hunger with his rock collection", "Man destroys his planet because he didn’t want to share it with his sister after she broke his favorite toy", or even "Grieving technophile steals and procreates with federally repossessed weapons-grade fuck doll."
- "Wanda driving to Westview with Vision's corpse in the trunk." Explanation This joke frequently accompanied an old video of Elizabeth Olsen casually driving in her car while listening to "Truly, Madly, Deeply" by Savage Garden.
- The MCWOO/The Marvel Cinematic WOO-niverse Explanation Following Jimmy Woo's reappearance in Episode 4, his popularity as a character shot way up, becoming even more of an Ensemble Dark Horse than he was in Ant-Man and the Wasp, which led to fans finding the many other works that his actor Randall Park has been in, leading to the joke that this is Jimmy Woo's world and we're all living in it.
- It's Been Agatha All Along! Explanation Agatha Harkness's insanely catchy, line-crossing Villain Song became an instant hit among fans.
- Agatha was the spider that bit Peter Parker. Explanation After Agatha admitted to once biting a kid to the Confession Cam, people joked that she used her witch powers to turn into the spider that gave Spider-Man his powers. Bonus points for Kathryn Hahn having already played the female Doctor Octopus from Miles Morales's universe in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
- IT WAS ME, WANDA! Explanation With the reveal that Agatha's secretly been pushing along the events of each episode, such as killing Sparky and controlling the fake Pietro, fans took this pre-existing meme from The Flash and applied it to have Agatha be responsible for every inconvenience in Wanda's life.
- And I killed Sparky, too! Explanation The last line of Agatha's Villain Song reveals this. Jokes about her being the most evil Marvel villain and John Wick jokes followed.
- Now, I'm not saying that Agatha Harkness IS a dog murderer, per se. I just think that her actions raise some questions. Like, for example, "is she a dog murderer?" Explanation After Episode 7, this quote from Jennifer Barkley, Kathryn Hahn's character in Parks and Recreation, is considered Hilarious in Hindsight since Agatha turns out to have indeed murdered a dog.
- And I [did evil thing], too! *Evil Laugh* Explanation Similar to the IT WAS ME, WANDA meme, the above line from Agatha's Villain Song quickly turned into a snowclone where she's responsible for everything from delaying the release date of Black Widow, to the theatrical version of Justice League, writing Game of Thrones Season 8 and even Daft Punk breaking up (which happened around the time of the episode's airing).
- It's Been [Character] All AlongExplanation Fans were quick to realize how exploitable the format of the song was and slot in the names of other characters or villains, especially Hidden Villains, in place of Agatha's, either as a simple word swap or a flat-out cover. For example: "Palpatine All Along".
- Unamused Vision Explanation In Episode 7, Vision notes how he's not impressed with what appears to be Wanda's attempts to prevent him from coming back to Westview while on the Confession Cam. A still from this scene is often used by fans whenever something strange happens that they are exhausted with dealing with, such as the initial ambiguity of the third Spider-Man film's title before it was officially announced as No Way Home.
- Agnes winking Explanation A still◊ of Agnes winking from the third episode became very popular as a reaction image. It's used to indicate that a statement is Blatant Lies.
- Monica Rambeau sees The Matrix's code. Explanation When we see how Monica sees energy signatures in Episode 8, it reminded several people of how Neo saw the Matrix's code at the climax of the first movie of the trilogy.
- Visión Blanco Explanation A variant of the "Gohan Blanco" meme involving the White Vision seen in Episode 8's stinger.
- Paul Bettany's always wanted to work with himself. Explanation Partway through the series, Paul Bettany hyped up that there would be a huge cameo appearance in the final episode, from an actor he'd always wanted to work with. After the reveal at the end of the penultimate episode that Vision was rebuilt, a lot of fans joked he was just talking about himself. And then Paul Bettany went on Good Morning America to confirm that this actually was what he meant by that quote.
- It was Bettany All Along!Explanation In relation to the "It's Been [Character] All Along!" meme
- Wanda driving a Buick Explanation Many viewers found Wanda's choice of a 2012 Buick Verano amusing, especially given that other Avengers like Tony and Steve (who wasn't exactly wealthy) were driving higher-end cars like Audis. People joked about how Wanda didn't get paid enough for her Avengers work or that she was cut out of Tony's will.
- You're Wanda Explanation Many people on Twitter began posting their own sitcoms that they grew up with and would otherwise like to emulate like Wanda has in this show.
- #canvisionshower Explanation Another phrase that trended on Twitter, this time with people speculating whether Vision is capable of showering given his android-like nature.
- Clowns Explanation The scene of Wanda's magic transforming S.W.O.R.D. agents into clowns is commonly used by viewers whose theories get Jossed, as is Darcy's line from Episode 4: "We got the whole clown car."
- Wanda's Loss Explanation People have taken stills◊ from Wanda's visit to S.W.O.R.D. and edited them to fit the infamous "Loss" strip
- "I have a theory, but I need more." Explanation A line said by Agatha in Episode 8, after first examining Wanda's past. Fans have applied the line to themselves watching the show, coming up with theories about how the story would go.
- "But what is a meme, if not jokes persevering?" Explanation A snowclone of Vision's line from Episode 8: "But what is grief, if not love persevering?", applied to other comparisons like "What is cheese, if not milk persevering" or "What is beef, if not cow perservering?".
- "Do you hear that sound? It's every screenwriter in the world whispering a reverent 'FUCK' under their breath." Explanation A tweet praising the line. Some mocked it for overpraising the dialogue, while others applied it to other scenes — either ironically or with sincerity.
- AND HE KEPT SPRAYING Explanation The notable moment where Hayward proves for certain that he's a Jerkass and attempts to shoot Billy and Tommy, emptying his entire clip and continuing to pull the trigger after he runs out of ammo, has been likened by fans to this iconic clip from the YouTuber Berleezy during his playthrough of The Walking Dead: Season Four in which the deuteragonist AJ continues to shoot an enemy out of rage long after the first shot killed them and proceeds to empty the entire clip into them and keeps pulling the trigger after running out of ammo, much like Hayward.
- "I request elaboration." Elaboration White Vision's overly-fancy line asking Hex Vision to explain himself, which some fans found humorous and subsequently adopted it for themselves to ask others to explain further.
- The Doctor is out. Explanation Many fans poke fun of the fact that Doctor Strange doesn't show up, despite reality-warping threats and evil magic users being his specialty, as well as Agatha being able to sense the afterglow of the Hex yet the Master of the Mystic Arts apparently couldn't.
- Strongest Avenger. Explanation A discussion that's been going on and off in the MCU fandom, with contenders like Bruce Banner (the jet in Thor: Ragnarok calls him so), Stephen Strange and Carol Danvers being on the table. The reveal that Wanda's powers exceed even that of Strange and that she's prophesized to destroy the world someday has made many fans proclaim that she's the true strongest Avenger.
- "Have you heard about the Ship of Theseus?" Explanation References to the conversation between the two Visions on the Theseus' Ship Paradox accompanied with pictures that contain two different versions of the same thing.
- Ralph Boner. Explanation A lot of fans are upset at the reveal that Evan Peters' version of Pietro turns out to be a random civilian possessed by Agatha, whose real name is Ralph Bohner — a name even the character himself makes fun of. Many have pointed out how Disney and Marvel Studios spent huge amounts of money and effort (not to mention hiring Peters himself) for a mere boner joke.
- Vishawn Explanation A shot of Vision in the finale wearing a turtleneck dubbed "Vishawn" by Black fans and edited to feature grills, chains, a durag, etc. (or, infamously, photoshopping an old photo of Dwayne Johnson with the near-same outfit). Sometimes he's paired with "LaWanda", or have his full name as "Vishawn J'Arvis" with the rationalization that since he's made from vibranium which came from Wakanda, he is actually black. This one is universally agreed to only be used by black fans.
- #SaveQuicksilver Explanation Some fans are not taking the reveal that Evan Peters' appearance and role was resolved with him turning out to be an average person named Ralph Bohner well, and have taken to using this hashtag in order to get Marvel to retcon it.
- Oprah interviewing Wanda and Vision Explanation Some fans have edited a still from Oprah Winfrey's interview of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (which aired a few days after the series finale) to replace their faces with those of Wanda and Vision◊, along with a caption featuring Oprah questioning Wanda and Vision about the events of the show in a similar style to the questions posed to the royals in the actual interview.
- Blue Vision Explanation The Assembled behind-the-scenes special revealed that for the black and white episodes, Paul Bettany's face had to be painted blue so it would appear the right shade when converted to grey. Naturally fans drew comparisons to the likes of Blue Man Group or Tobias Fünke. Alternately, they poke fun at how strange Vision looks with human ears, with some people saying that he looks like a bald Ellen DeGeneres.
- Sorry We're Wanda Explanation This is one of the signs that can be seen in the intro for Episode 7, with the absurdity of the phrase becoming so popular that it's been printed on merchandise such as T-shirts, backpacks, and even bath mats.
- Emmy-winning Halloween costumes Explanation After the show won an Emmy for its costumes, the fans had fun acting like it was just for the silly costumes in the Halloween episode.
- "On a scale of one to ten, how would you rate your pain?" Explanation A common joke is how differently the show would turn out if Wanda had Baymax to talk to. Most show her breaking down, crying, and hugging Baymax the moment he asks how she's feeling.
