Kaito Odagiri is a normal fifth grade boy who can hold his own in a fight and loves to show off. This attracts the attention of Makoto Kaibara, a boy at Kaito's school who reveals to him that he can use magic, but he needs Kaito's help to protect the peace of their town.
Kaito jumps at the chance of being a magic-wielding superhero, but his excitement turns to horror when he realizes that he'll be protecting the town dressed as a typical magical girl under the name Thrilling Pink. Although initially reluctant, Kaito soon discovers that there's more to being a magical boy than simply looking cute in a skirt.
We are Magical Boys contains examples of:
- Added Alliterative Appeal: For magical boys there is Glittery Gold and Lilly Lily. There is also Haruto Hibino.
- Animal Motifs: Some magical boys are animal themed; like Meow Meow Orange and Squeaky Grey.
- Big Eater: Kaito is capable of downing a big bag of snacks in addition to dinner. He also eats several large-sized foods during the Magical Boy party.
- Dark Magical Girl: Charging Red, as well as the magical boys who let 'Beastliness' take over and gradually become demonic-looking entities.
- I'm Taking Her Home with Me!: Charging Red/Rakuto really wants to dote (cuddle, feed, comfort, etc) on Thrilling Pink/Kaito after being swayed by his natural charm.
- The Klutz: Haruto/Sparkly Yellow is VERY clumsy.
- Magical Land: "The land of Magic", Tokimekia is its prominent country.
- Product Placement: The Nintendo Switch game console gets mentioned quite a bit by multiple boys. Lofty Purple has even been shown holding one.
- Shrinking Violet: Makoto wouldn't talk to the servants at home and usually hid from others prior to gaining the ability to become a Magical Boy.
- The Chosen One: As they get to know Kaito/Thrilling Pink, some people come to believe he was destined to become a Magical Boy.
- Transformation Trinket: The 'Transformation Ring', a bracelet that all Magical Boys obtain. Its design/name is based on the country of the Magical World they are affiliated with.
- Unrequited Love: Kaito is disturbed by Rakuto's affection.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Makoto and Kaito can become combative and insult each other when they don't agree, they also like to tease each other, but they form a very close bond over the series.
